Default What Disney Films Should Be Redone?

Disney has had so many hits, but it has also had some misses. Are there any films that you wish could be redone?

If you have more than one, post them in order according to the one you want to see redone the most.

1) Pete's Dragon: I really enjoy this movie. It has great songs and a great story. The filming wasn't as good, which made the movie more of a miss. This movie I think has the possibility to be big if redone today, as long as some numbers were re-imagined and a better cast was picked (imagine Jim Carry or Will Ferrell as the medicine man guy and his assistant). My only reservation would be to have Elliot remain traditionally animated rather than CGI or something.

2) Bedknobs and Broomsticks: I really really like the original, but it has never had the fame of Mary Poppins. Again, the story is good, but the animation I think fell a little flat. With today's technology, that part of the film would look spectacular. Mr. Banks (I don't know the actor's name) and Angela Lansbury were fantastic in this film, but the kids were just so-so. I would hate to see someone other than Banks and Lansbury, but I would like to see this movie done on a larger and grander scale. The potential is there to be superbig. Plus Disney would do good to return a live action/animated film to the big screen.

3) Tron: This movie wasn't really a miss, but looking back at it it's very 80s (which isn't a bad thing). I think it could be huger today with the whole computer age upon us. Expanded and including spectacular special effects (just imagine what computers can do today!) would make this film a shoe-in for summer blockbuster.

Do you guys have any ideas?

Pete's Dragon, Return to Oz, Swiss Family Robinson, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are good choices to be remade if it ever comes down to it.

Meh, most remakes turn out really bad and aren't on par with the original. I think you should just leave them alone, especially classics like 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas and Swiss Family Robinson. Both are excellent films and still hold up GREAT today. I don't think there's a need for a remake.

I'm going to go with Haunted Mansion on this. I got to that movie excited to see it and left disappointed. A movie like that is not supposed to be as humorous as it was, and I don't believe Disney should have cast Eddie Murphy as the starring role, he works well with comedies but this movie should not have been so comical as I had mentioned.

^^I agree. The only thing about that movie is that it was recently done, so it'll be a long time before it can be remade.

However, if Disney ever decides to redo it, I'd like to see them focus on the Phantom Manor which has an established storyline.

I'd have to agree with Tron. Awesome effects for when it was made, but a blah storyline. However the popularity has stayed, due largely in part to the success of the video game, and this could be revisited and made into the awesome story it could've been.

Mary Poppins, 20,000 Leagues, Swiss Family Robinson, those have stood the test of time, and should be left that way.

I have to disagree with every single one of these movies, except for Haunted Mansion. Never saw it and not really interested in doing so. OK Tron, my god.... You have to be crazy if you want to redo that movie. Such a cult favorite and really pushed the boundaries of film making and the story was fine. How about trying to come up with something fresh and new instead of remaking old movies like all the studios seem to be doing now a days since it seams ideas are in short supply. I wouldn't remake any of the movies mentioned at all. A sequal to Tron would be nice. The older Disney films have a quality in them that would be destroyed in a new production. Just wouldn't be the same. The story would more than likely change drastically and you would be left with a movie you would have been hoping was as close if not the same as the original, then be upset that it was nothing like it.

OK, a sequel then...

There was talk about it for a while. Tron 2.0 I think what it was called. I see your point, EX. I could not imagine them being able to use the same story line, but I do think there is so much potential there.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea would be AMAZING if they make it intense with great CGI, lots of action, and make the movie somewhat "dark" in nature. Nemo should be obviously crazy and a genius at the smae time. They should not try to make it like the original; however, they should keep the Nautilus the same (the Nautilus is awesome).

Bedknobs and Broomsticks would be great too. I love that movie.

See the problem with making movies, even themed to past events or worse older movies is is that society and modern times takes hold of it and social changes affect and influence how it will be and look. So your movie even though your redoing it from an old one will be drastically changed because of how times have changed, wording is different, life is different people's mentality is different. Even all the way down to how the movie is shot and or casted is different. Same will go for in the future when our kids want to see a remake of the remake of the original movie. I would much rather see someone else make their interpretation of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea only because it wasn't a Disney story so like Willy Wonka it isn't the same or a remake. It is someone else's interpretation of the old book.

I'm all for a Haunted Mansion remake. When I put it on commentary the other night the producers were saying how initially the Gracey/Elizabeth flashback was a lot longer and through out the movie, but that test audiences wanted more Eddie Murphy. Who made up this test audience?! Now, I don't know about anyone else, but I really wanted MORE Gracey. I think he was the saving grace (no pun intended) of the film. Then again Nat Parker is one of my all time favorite actors. I also was a little disappointed when I found out that Anthony Hopkins had first been approached for Ramsley. That would have been amazing! To me it had so much potential to be breath taking. i would have loved a darker side to it instead of that slap stick comedy. "The butler did it" was one of the worst lines ever penned.

That just me.

Hugs and peaches,

Maya :)

I think follow-ups would be more in order than remakes.

Actually, for Haunted Mansion, it wouldn't be a remake so much as a re-do from ground up. Preferably traditionally animated or a stop-motion film by Tim Burton or Harry Selick.

I'd love to see a Tron 2.0 film, and either a series or franchise on 20K. There's lots of fantastic scenes from the novel that were left out of the original film... find a new James Mason, CGI-up me a Nautilus and lets take a rip around Atlantis and the South Pole.

But more than that, I think they could get some pretty good mileage out of just rereleasing the originals. Let's see 20K, Mary Poppins, Swiss Family Robinson and Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier back up on the screen with the full promotional engine of Disney Marketing behind them.
