Brother Bear was definitely a good movie. You know, come to think about it Though, I don't think anything can get as obscure as "Dinosaur"

Great question. I suggest Fantasia.
Fantasia suffers for a variety of reasons. I think today's audiences find it inaccessible due to its lack of dialog. Plus, I doubt that anthology films generate as much interest as one story features. Many adults will admit to enjoying Pinocchio or Sleeping Beauty. But there are even a large number of Disney fans who will confess to finding Fantasia boring. And it didn't do any better when it debuted in 1940. Audiences found it confusing, reviewers were less than infatuated with it, and WWII eliminated the foreign market. Fantasia had been intended to return to theaters with original content combined with new. But it lost money and ideas developed for Fantasia sequels were repurposed in the package films that came later. But the very things that have distanced it from audiences are what make it so special. Who could imagine a film that would have the boldness to cast aside words and sound effects in favor of previously composed music. And the audacity to combine such dissimilar concepts from classical mythology to science. Even starting the film with a segment that not only had no dialog, it didn't even have characters. The courage of this film alone is heroic. And think, it was only the third Disney feature. Fantasia 2000 tried, but I just don't think it got there. I'd take Melody Time or even Fun and Fancy Free over the 2000 film any day. Nothing in it was as amazing as Fantasia's dinosaurs, or was as delicately rendered as Chernobog. It didn't have the subtle beauty of the Nutcracker pixies. It simply wasn't Fantasia. This is not only my favorite Disney feature, it's my favorite film. When people bring up Raging Bull or Citizen Kane, I shake my head and remember Fantasia, arguably the most original film of all. |

Definitely The Hunchback of Notre Dame! Most people hate it and are horrified to find that it is my favorite Disney movie. I don't get it -- it has beautiful animation, an incredible soundtrack, and a thrilling yet tragic story. Plus Frollo is arguably the most evil Disney villain, even without the aid of sorcery or any sort of weapon other than moral corruption & a horrible abuse of power.
Also, I like Esmeralda much more than any of the "official" Princesses. =P Too bad she was allegedly banned from Disneyland. Another one is The Fox and the Hound. It makes me feel like someone took my heart and dropped it into a bucket of boiling tears. (for fellow Office fans) |

I think that Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, Atlantis, Meet the Robinsons, Hunchback, etc. are going to be considered classics by future generations. Those films are going to stand the test of time because they are all very well constructed stories, not to mention beautiful to look at.
Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi and even the Wizard of Oz were all more or less box office flops at first. But quality will always reveal itself given enough time. |

I can see the argument for Fantasia, but I question how poorly-regarded it is nowadays. Maybe I just haven't met a lot of Disney fans who don't like it, and I don't hear about it from anybody else.
I would put my money on Treasure Planet for the most underrated of Disney's animated films. The story, at least, isn't any worse than any other Disney film. Meanwhile, the design and style put into it is feverishly original and beautiful. I love it, and wish I could sail through space on a tall ship. After that... hmm... I agree that Atlantis is a nice little film, but not quite up to that much snuff. I hated Hunchback of Notre Dame for completely undermining everything the original novel was actually about and turning one of my favorite literary characters into a one-note "really totally evil" stereotype, even if it did make Frollo look cool. I've yet to see Brother Bear, though I'd like to just for the scenes of Ice Age mammals. I'd probably put forward the anthology features like Melody Time, Make Mine Music, Saludos Amigos, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad and even The Reluctant Dragon as being pretty underrated. It doesn't help that they're usually split up and the segments parcelled out separately. |

The Rescuers Down Under definitely gets my vote.
-Engaging story - it ignited my imagination as a child, and I used to love the idea of having a giant eagle as a best friend. -Groundbreaking from a technical standpoint, being the first feature to use the CAPS system. Not to mention some of the early CGI work. -Amazing artwork. Marahute is one of my favorite Disney characters ever. She is so gracefully and beautifully animated, a lifelike, majestic eagle that is still portrayed as human, but without being a caricature. And some of the background art is gorgeous! And my all time favorite animated scene from a Disney movie is Cody shooting off the waterfall, soaring through the air, and landing gracefully on Marahute's back. It doesn't get much more amazing than that moment. -Beautiful score by Bruce Broughton. One of my all-time favorites. "Cody's Flight" still gives me chills! |
