Happy 80th Birthday Mickey Mouse!![]() His birthday was November 18 See this: http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movi...screeningroom/ I can't believe it, he's a goold old mouse now and will live forever! I tried searching a thread about his birthday but couldn't find it. So does anyone know how they decided that November 18, 1928 was Mickey's official birthday? Also, was the swcreening of Steamboat Willie on July 28, 1928?

The first public screening of Steamboat Willie was on November 18, 1928 at the Colony Theater on Broadway in NYC. So that date became Mickey's official birthday. There have been other dates published in various places and I think even Walt got it wrong more than once. But the correct date is 11/18/1928.
Just for the love of sheer Disney Geekdom the program that night included Steamboat Willie, a newsreel titled "Colony Topics", a short produced by William Le Baron titled "The FBO Special Talking and Sound Picture" and the feature film was titled "Gang War" starring Olive Borden and Jack Pickford. Too much information? Probably, but when it comes to Mickey's birthday, I just can't help myself.

You may be thinking of the sound test which Walt, Roy, Ub Iwerks and others did where they showed some scenes from Steamboat Willie on a bed sheet while performing live sound effects and music. I believe that was in July of 1928. It wasn't a public showing, it was an inhouse test to see if sound was feasible in the cartoon.
I have seen the release date of 7/28/1928 inaccurately given for Steamboat Willie from several sources including various web sites. Plane Crazy and Gallopin Gaucho were made before Steamboat Willie as silent cartoons. Although they were released after Steamboat Willie, once sound was added to them, it could be argued that Mickey was created in early 1928 and actually turned 80 earlier this year. But Mickey's birthday has always been calculated from the first public showing on 11/18.

Pez! Mickey Pez! That's cool Ezra.
Geek fact of the day: Pez candy was created a year before Mickey was born. The Pez dispenser was invented the year that Mickey turned 20. I love the vintage poster.

Ezra, I saw those at a candy store at the my town's mall. I wanted to get it for my best friend's birthday this year sooo badly, but I couldn't afford it. Looks really cool though! That poster is awesome!
