Sorry about the Keel Boats! I myself never got to ride them... we were going to on our next visit once, and then they were closed. And I grew up a big fan of Davy Crockett, but he is sadly going the way of the Frontierland Zorro duels, Tom Sawyer, and a lot of other Wild West attractions... into Yesterland. I just hope the canoes stick around for a while. The lack of traffic on the Rivers of America is deplorable, IMO.
The story goes that 1 Keel Boat, the Gullywhumper, sank in 1997 due in part both to overloading and some guests on board rocking the boat. Several guests ended up in the water, and some had to be taken to a local hospital for treatment. Both the Gullywhumper and the Bertha Mae were removed from service. The Gullywhumper now appears on the north (?) side of the island , moored near the island as a prop. The Bertha Mae was auctioned off. http://www.yesterland.com/keelboats.html http://www.miceage.com/guest/gu080607a.htm (article about the man who owns the Bertha Mae) |

I read that one of them sold on eBay and the other is a prop. According to David Koenig's book (I can't remember if it was the first or second Mouse Tales book), the Keel Boats were never really meant to trasnport people and were merely meant to be props to tie into the Tom Sawyer's Island, but when the park first opened, they needed more boats on the river so they were used.

I never got to ride these either. Another piece of Disney history that I missed out on!

This Is What Happened:
On A Day In 1997, The Gullywhumper , One Of The Keel Boats, Tipped Over With Crowds Of People Aboard. Then It Was Unsafe So They Just Use Them As Props. Source: Yesterland.com |
