OK, so DCA is officially THE must see of the Disneyland resort this Christmas/Holiday season... or is it?

I was told over $1million spent on the Cars land overlay alone (and IMO it shows... mostly). And the new Buena Vista Street? Remarkable!
I really love the touch of their being a Santa in the department store of Elias & Co. - that is just all kindas of "Miracle On 34th Street" to me.

What do you guys think (that have been lucky enough to see it in person).
Worth the hefty price tag?
Favorite things/touches you noticed?
Anything you thought was cheesy?

Have at it!

I'm freeeaking out man!

My friend (also from Hawaii) is at DCA today. She was there yesterday as well... an hour before opening, and said people were sprinting for the RSR fast pass line, and that by 9 am, the line for fast passes was stretched around to Hollywoodland! Carsland was closed off because there were too many people in the lines and walkways- that CMs were turning people away, so her friend couldn't even determine what the single rider line, or standby line was like. On a Tuesday morning in October. :icon_shoc

My family and I leave in 3 weeks, and if it's that crazy my DH will be the biggest crankasaurus. Any tips on how I can make Carsland something my family can experience without so much pandemonium?!

In June, I visited Cars Land at Disney California Adventure park during a short vacation to the Golden State. Wow! I was beyond impressed with this new land (and equally as impressed with Buena Vista Street, where I enjoyed dancing to the music of Five & Dime!). One thing I loved in Cars Land was the details, such as the car hoods found at Ramone’s House of Body Art. The hoods were designed by legendary custom car builder and designer Chip Foose. He enlisted the help of Swedish artist Ray Hill to create the 11 hoods (which, according to Chip, each have a hidden Mickey in their designs). You may recall my fellow Disney Parks Blog author Kathy Mangum discussed the work that Chip and his team did for Cars Land. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one impressed with his work. Julie Young, Product Developer for pins, told me that one car hood in particular served as inspiration for a new limited edition pin set arriving August 2.

“I first saw an image of the ‘Ramone’s’ car hood during a meeting about Cars Land construction,” explained Julie. “As soon as I saw the image, I thought it would make a great pin. For many pins I develop, I like adding characters to the artwork. These 11 car hoods, however, don’t feature characters, as I think they are iconic enough to be their own characters.”

Julie worked with artist John Henselmeier to create the pin artwork inspired by car hoods. You may recall John from recent discussions about the merchandise he designed for the 30th Anniversary of Epcot. I think my favorite hood is the one pictured in the top row, third from the left. The colors used for that one are beautiful!

The set will be released at Ramone’s House of Body Art, Radiator Springs Curios and Elias & Co. in Disney California Adventure park, and at Disney’s Pin Traders in the Downtown Disney District. The set has an edition size of 500 and a retail of $165.00.

For those of you who are making the “Road Trip to California” next week for the pin release and signing, and for those of you who weren’t able to hitch a ride… here’s your first look at the next set of pins, set to release August 17. Themed to “A Car Show at Disneyland,” this collection of pins will range from characters like Tinker Bell, Oswald, Jessica Rabbit, Dumbo, Woody, Buzz, Sulley and the Yeti, to an array of pins idolizing hood ornaments, trophies and keys.

I asked Disney Design Group artists Ron Cohee and Mike Sullivan for their thoughts on this new collection and here’s what they had to say:

“As a big Pixar fan, I really enjoyed working on these pins,” says Ron. “The pins are based on the scenes shown at the drive-in theater during the end credits of the film ‘Cars,’ where snippets of classics tell a different tale like ‘Toy Car Story,’ ‘A Bug’s Life,’ and ‘Monster Trucks, Inc.’ In this automotive universe, the Buzz Lightyear car is a Space Ranger Lunar Rover, Flik is – as you know – a ‘Bug’ and the Yeti is, of course, an abominable snowplow.”

Mike went on to share that it was their extensive research of different styles of cars that led to the designs. “I wanted each car to tie back to its owner. For example, Mickey’s car is a double ‘M,’ while Minnie’s car is based off the shape of her shoes. But it was when I was doing the illustration for the car show pin set,” says Mike, “that I decided I wanted to crank things up a notch, so I incorporated the iconic cars from the classic Disney and Pixar films with theme park attractions. A few that we consider trophy-worthy are Cruella’s Roadster, the Mayor-mobile from ‘Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas’ and the Incredimobile, among others.”
:
There are about 15 pins in all, and while I can’t show you all of them, we will have the entire collection posted on www.DisneyPins.com. For those of you joining us at Disneyland Trading Night on June 29 at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel, keep your eyes peeled for a look under the hood at more of these pins scheduled to release this summer.

Just like last time, these pins will be part of an online wristband opportunity. The entry period is July 25 –August 8, so don’t miss out. Those selected will have the opportunity to purchase the pins on the morning of August 17 at Disney’s Pin Traders. Tip: On August 17, Ron and Mike will be on hand for a special appearance and signing from 9-11 a.m. at Disney’s Pin Traders, and they will appear again later that evening from 7-10 p.m. as part of Trading Night at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel.

Today I went on Ariel's Undersea Adventure, and I noticed something that I never would have expected. Just before leaving the Under the Sea room, if you look to the right/behind your car, you will notice the incredible Mr. Limpet hidden in the shadows. First of all, The Incredible Mr. Limpet is a Warner Bros. movie, so I find it odd that he's in Ariel's ride, but without a doubt, that's who it was. I was so surprised to see him hidden back there. It sort of creeped me out because he's not lit up, and in a very obscure place. Has anyone else seen this before?

Hello! On a last minute whim, we decided to go to Cars Land on Saturday (July 14th). Our AP's expired the 15th, so we squeezed in one last trip. We had been anxiously awaiting the opening of Cars Land since they announced it. We have 2 little boys (4 and 2) who live, eat, breathe, and sleep Cars, so we were beyond excited! We drove down Friday after work (which we've never done with the kids). That was an experience! LOL. Made pretty good time and pulled into the hotel at 11:30. Check in was fast and we got into the room and ready for bed quickly for the next day. BTW, the boys had no clue where we were. We told them we were going to Lake Tahoe. HAHA. They didn't even notice TOT across the street from the hotel when we pulled in.

The next morning my husband and I got up bright and early. We were attempting to get to DCA at 8, opening time. (we have NEVER been able to get to the parks at opening with the kids) We both showered and got ready. Then my husband started to tell my oldest where we were going. We recorded it. He had no clue. We said we could go to the beach and a car show and he seemed happy with that. Then my husband gave him the third option: Cars Land! He asked if we were kidding and still didn't believe us when we told him we were right across the street. He said Cars Land is far away. We had to go show him TOT for him to believe us! LOL. It was great! When my youngest figured it out we could not get out of the room fast enough! And after taking a long time to buy my 4 year olds ticket, we got to the park at 8:10! Wow!

Walking into the park there was no wait at the gate. We power walked down Buena Vista Street (which was gorgeous! I wish I had more time to check things out) headed to Bugs Land to get Racers Fastpass. Then we saw a huge line by the Carthay! It was for Racers! Whoa! So we jumped in line and waited. It was much shorter then we anticipated. I grabbed some Starbucks with my little guy while my husband and the oldest waited in line. Starbucks is gorgeous and huge! And the line was fast. Black Iced tea really helped me stay awake that day!

After grabbing our Fast Passes, we headed into Cars Land. Walking down Route 66 for the first time was AMAZING! The look on my boys faces was priceless. Ear to ear smiles! They were so excited and could not wait! We parked our strollers by Sarges and headed out to check out RS! First stop was the Cozy cones! My kids just loved the lobby and loved finding Buzz and Rex hidden within the cones. They were jumping up and down with pure joy! My oldest couldn't wait for the fast pass time, so he and my husband waited for RSR. The sign said 150 minutes, but it was only about an hour. I tried to ride Mater's with my youngest, but he got scared when it was our turn and I didn't force him to go on it. We wandered around and took photos and met Mater in line.

Jason LOVED RSR! And wanted to go again right away. My youngest being only about an inch too small to ride, stayed behind with my husband and I took Jason with our baby swap pass. It was AWESOME! RSR is my new favorite ride! So pretty. And very neat. I am a huge Cars fan too. I've seen the movie hundreds of times. I love that Doc is in the attraction. He is my FAVORITE! Although a lot of the effects weren't working (tractors didn't tip, white wall tires didn't work, Doc didn't turn towards us) it was still super fun! The racing part is the best =)

As a family, we all rode Luigi's. I had heard a lot of bad reviews on this attraction. The boys couldn't wait (they have a fascination with tires). They were especially excited about the beach balls! LOL. We LOVED the ride! All of us. My husband went with the two boys and me alone. Neither of us had any issues getting the tires to move. Yes, the line was longer, but so detailed and fun to look at stuff. (IMO, I think Disney is really missing the mark with merchandise. They could sell so many of the items in the display cases at Luigi's. So many things were so unique and perfect to sell. I know I would buy a lot of the items! And stuff from the Cozy Cones too). I can't wait for the line to get shorter so we can ride more! This ride is super fun =)

Afterwards we rode Mater's. Same thing, we all LOVED it! I rode alone again and boy, did I get whipped around! One time I even hit the side of the trailer. LOL. I wasn't paying attention, trying to take photos of the kids on the ride. I really enjoyed it and especially loved the music! The queue was fantastic too. The boys really loved it because they've seen all the Mater's Tall Tales.

We had lunch at Flo's which was delicious! I got the pork and my husband the turkey. We loved them both. Actually, I liked the turkey better and I'm not a huge turkey fan. I got the pasta salad and beans. Yum! We got the boys mac n cheese. It came in the Lightning McQueen popcorn holder. They were beside themselves! LOL. There was no line for Flo's. We walked right in. And the outdoor seating with a gorgeous view of RSR is my new favorite spot to hang out. It's just beautiful. I want to try the pies next time!

The rest of the day we mainly hung out at Cars Land. We made our way over to Goofy's Sky School for a little bit. Had an ice cream treat at Ghirardelli! Mmmm. Went to Disneyland late in the afternoon for Buzz and Star Tours (and I took my little guy to the Tiki Room, his favorite!). Soon we were headed back to Route 66. We grabbed a quick corn dog at Corn Dog Castle and hurried along. Didn't want to miss the neon coming on! I highly recommend waiting for this if you are there. They played Sh'boom and all the lights come on just like the movie! It's SO neat! They never would tell us an exact time, but basically right after the sun goes down. For us a little after 8PM. It was so neat! We loved it!

We watched the show with DJ, which I thought was kinda cheesy, but the boys couldn't get enough! I really, really wish they would have put a little bit more effort into the Lightning McQueen, Mater, DJ and Red. They talk, but their mouths don't move. It's kinda disappointing since everything else looks so spot on. I'm hoping they are working on this and will release it later as another reason to come visit or something. I just find it odd that no one really thought about that. Even when we saw Disney on Ice Mater and Lightning had mouths that moved when they talked. I think it can be done!

We walked around some more, took photos with Lightning, then we rode racers one more time (when we tried to use our FP, the ride was down) and got to see the fireworks going off while on the attraction! So cool! My little guy rode Mater's with his dad, then passed out cold! We stayed until 10:30, almost closing! None of us wanted to leave, we were having so much fun. I can't wait to go back and I can't believe we stayed almost all day at DCA! First time we've ever done that. Overall the quick trip was super worth it and we made so many great memories! Yay! =)

So, I found a really cool thing at the store the other day. I have never used body wash, always used good ol' soap. I decided to get some on a whim while I was at the store, and as I went through them all and smelled each one, I came across one that really smelled nice. I knew I recognized the scent from somewhere, and I bought it.

When I used it, I realized what it was... It smells EXACTLY like the smell on Soarin' Over California that they use for the "gliding over the river" sequence! Folks, get this stuff, it's really amazing how it takes you right back onto the ride!

It's by Old Spice, and the body wash is called "Komodo". I am totally hooked due to the connection to the attraction. It's really amazing how they could have accidentally gotten the scent so right!

And for the disclaimer, I am a long-time member of VisionsFantastic, I do not work for Old Spice or any other body wash company, and this is not an ad for a specific product.

Yours Truly,

So, I am a meticulous planner all of a sudden, (I'm usually a go with the flow kind of gal) I think perhaps it's just the exuberant EXCITEMENT I have for my trip which is sadly, still a little over 4 months away...

I already had a ton of questions answered by some super awesome fellow :vf:ers, but, I have a few new ones regarding the Carthay Circle Theater and the WOC preffered/reserved viewing.

First, Have any of you eaten there yet?! I need some reviews folks! I've seen the menu and it looks awesome. Any meal suggestions?

For the WOC dining package, I understand you need to order an appetizer and entree OR entree and dessert... does that apply to kids as well? Anyone know? If my party is going to consist of my mother-in-law, my two sister-in laws (is that even right, sister in laws?), my Hubs, Myself, my 5 year old, my 4 year old and my 1 year old... I would hope that 3 appetizers, 2 desserts, and 7 entrees would qualify us to get some preferred dining passes to WOC. Any CMs know the low down?

And lastly, I heard the viewing sections have now changed... so more and more people are recommending the preferred dining section... Anyone done preferred dining? How early did you arrive to snag yourself a prime spot?

I'm wondering if I should just listen to my Hubs and be cheap and elect for the picnics, and arrive an hour or 90 min beforehand to grab a good place or splurge on the dining package at CCT. With 2 small kids, and this being our first time seeing the show, I want to be able to SEE it, and them SEE it.

Help please

Feel free to add your pics of Opening Day of Cars Land. I took these this morning. My initial opinions are that the new land is cool and fun for all ages but there's not alot to do there and no where for the crowd to cycle thru, very cramped walkways. I am going to bet most people say that RSR is the best attraction there and the rest of the land is just "ok" or "cool" for viewing. Here's some pics..

Hi everyone!

So I watched a video of the Glow with the Show hats from World of Color and they looked amazing!! How is this going to work after the AP previews? Will you be able to buy them during the day before you see World of Color? Will you have to show your fastpass in order to get them? Also, does the color of the ears work outside of the show?

I really really really hope this isn't just a one time deal and that the hats will be for sale when I visit the park in a few weeks! What a fantastic new way to experience the WOC!

"The best DLR attraction since Indiana Jones." "Up to par with Pirates in level of immersion." "Fantastic animatronics." "Just like you're in the movie." "Best ride in DCA." "A must-see for every visit to DLR." These are just a few of the comments made about the brand-new Radiator Springs Racers attraction at Disney California Adventure opening officially to the public in a matter of just five days, the exciting conclusion to DCA's multi-year and multi-billion dollar expansion. Although I won't be able to ride the thrill ride-dark ride-hybrid until later this September, I have already written my own review of the attraction judging by simple pictures and videos, a judgement process that I often criticize. This is one rare instance where I will be flat-out honest and say that even in videos you can feel the immersion level. Just as a brief forewarning, this review has SPOILERS in it and A LOT OF THEM, so if you don't want to know anything about the new ride skim to the end.

The queue is almost entirely outdoors with a few little buildings and caves to walk in. From mere pictures, the queue showcases incredible views of the beautiful rock-work, buttes, and mountains, a lush variety of desert foliage lining the path. Placards describing the story of Radiator Springs and the natural elements of the desert also line the path, very much in the style of a typical National Park or zoo. Weathered signs also appear along the trail advertising such products as oil, coolant, and other humorous products that only a personified car would buy. The queue is very much a tribute to classic tourist traps, very similar to what one might find at the Hoover Dam or any kind of park in Nevada, Southeastern California, or Arizona. Very well done.

The loading area is held within a large cave, a part of the fantastic Taillight Caverns, a tribute to the extinct Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland (which concluded with a trip through Rainbow Caverns, a neon phosphorescent pool-filled grotto). The Sheriff appropriately gives the English safety spiel while Ramone appropriately gives the Spanish safety spiel. The cars (each car has a different gender determined by their color) then take off outdoors and enter a little canyon where they await to be checked by a cast member to ensure that everyone is strapped in. Once this has been accomplished the cars take off for a leisurely cruise through the buttes at a relaxing pace eventually emerging through a tunnel and coming face to face with a gorgeous waterfall, a sight taken directly from the movie, stated to be one of the most breathtaking sights in the entire resort. Guests soon after swerve into a dark tunnel. It is now nighttime and in a manner similar to Lightning McQueen's arrival in Radiator Springs, the cars almost get into several accidents, starting with Mac who pops out of nowhere, flashing his headlights and screaming. The cars then narrowly avoid crashing into the husband and wife car arguing while passing through Radiator Springs in the first film, immediately moving towards and oncoming train. Luckily they avoid being hit once again, only to pass the Radiator Springs sign and be pulled over by the Sheriff. This is where the animatronics become stunning. Their movements are extremely fluid and depending on the car, their mouths actually move. This occurs with the Sheriff, Mater, Lizzie, Sarge, Doc Hudson, and Fillmore while Sally, McQueen, Luigi, and Guido all have projected mouths. Ramone and Flo are animated characters behind a screen when seen later. Anyways, the Sheriff tells guests that to slow down because the race hasn't started yet, so he requests that Mater takes them into town. Mater rolls up to the cars and makes a few comments about the upcoming race before inviting guests to go tractor tipping...which they do...

Mater appears once again near a small field of three sleeping tractors. Mater turns off his only working headlight and honks, causing the tractors to tip over in fright, one of them farting and releasing a puff of smoke. This awakens the monstrous "bull" Frank who attempts to chase guests, who quickly speed up and reach the relative safety of town, Mater's fleeing silhouette projected across the full moon. In town, the cars pass by Flo's V8 Cafe where Sarge and Fillmore argue about something, shortly followed by Lizzie sleeping outside her shop and a silent Red watering some flowers. McQueen and Sally appear up ahead prepping guests for the big race, McQueen sending cars randomly to either Luigi's Casa Della Tires or Ramone's Body Shop. The left side leads into Luigi's where Guido gives the cars new tires which can actually be felt being installed. A curtained mirror opens to reveal the new tires, Luigi bragging about how much they look like a real race car. On the right side is Ramone's where an animated screen of Ramone and Flo watch as the cars are sprayed by paint. Now the videos don't show much here, but I'm going to assume that guests can actually see a new paint job in their car or something. There is a visible mirror hanging in the shop right after they're sprayed.

Now the cars are separated onto two separate tracks, left and right obviously. Doc Hudson in his Fabulous Hudson Hornet attire rests on a moving platform in between both tracks, wearing a headset, making bold comments about each car, telling them they don't need fancy tires and paint to be a successful race car. The cars leave behind Doc and enter a room facing outwards to the outside world...the racetrack. Luigi and Guido (Guido in his Italian Afro) do the countdown leading into the cars eruption from the show building and onto the outdoors racetrack. The race itself is a direct important from Test Track. Although slower it is much better with more dips, twists and turns, and more detail and immersion. It seriously looks like you're going through and around the Cadillac Range. The race portion is seen from nearly all angles of Cars Land, a fantastic weenie of sorts, the perfect draw-in to fans of both thrill rides, classic Disney attractions, and Cars of course. One of the two cars beats the other car in the race, both slowing down and entering beautiful Taillight Caverns which is filled with stallac-lights, lol. Before returning into the loading area, Mater and McQueen make one last appearance, congratulating guests on a good race. And that concludes the long-awaited Radiator Springs Racers.

This ride is going to be a must. I can assure all of you that, even if you don't like Cars. I give it five stars just judging by the videos and pictures. That's really saying something about a modern Disney attraction that's not in Tokyo. The quality level is right up to par with nearly anything found at DisneySea. DCA is slowly becoming the second best second gate in a Disney resort. Five stars. Well done Imagineers. Well done.

Thoughts? :)

Is the Toyota fj truck still parked near the loading area for the grizzly river run? If so it will throw off the theme of being in the 1950's as the truck is from the mid 1960's. I wonder if DCA will sell it.. I'd like to have it. It is super rare as the US didn't sell these. It would have had to be imported from Japan. It is very sought after by Toyota FJ purists.

Just saw a disturbing video on Fox News of and inebriated guest causing problems and being subdued in front of Tower of Terror. Although I am in favor of alcoholic beverages being served with food for those that wish to imbibe, I think the Disneyland Resort staff needs to monitor the intake of guests and cut them off when it becomes obvious the individual has had enough. I am, however, not releasing the individual from his responsibility to make informed decisions regarding his own intake of alcohol. Lets face it, if your intention is to get drunk, then go to a bar, not the Disneyland Resort! This individuals decision making process needs work and his actions were despicable. Please, no more repeats of this type of incident by anyone in the Disneyland Resort.

I know its only days after Christmas but me and my girlfriend were just at Disneyland for a few days and were walking through our hotel lobby at the Grand Californian and she loved the paintings on the walls. They are the ones from the lobby down the corridor to Downtown Disney through the hotel.

Does anyone know who painted the pieces or who the artist(s) are/is? They look kind of generic to a non-art person like me but I was thinking of getting her a print framed for valentines day because she mentioned them every single time we walked by. Just trying to plan ahead here lol.

I am planning on visiting the resort on the weekend of Thursday the 15th. Half of my party is staying at the Grand California - I am part of the half that is not. I wanted to know if my friend and I activate our park hoppers on Thursday and give them to our friends staying at the Grand Californian, could they get us fastpasses the next day for World of Color (since they get early entry to DCA), or do my friend and I need to scan our tickets through the entrance for them to work?

Also, what section have you guys found to be the best for viewing? We did the dinner package last year and it was hard to see everything being so close. I did blue over the summer and it was incredible -- we could see everything on the screen perfectly!

Hello Disney fans!
I always like Disneyland better because of its unique layout and magic. CA Adventure never had the same magic/feel that Disneyland did. What I noticed is all the rides are becoming Disney themed. The "Sun Wheel" (which I imagine is a reference the California sun) became the "Mickey Wheel". "Mulholland Madness" (Mulholland Drive) became "Goofy's Flight School". "The Orange Stinger" became "Silly Symphony Swings". All these changes from CA to Disney lead me to believe that maybe the theme was boring. People want another park just like Disneyland, they want all the characters and themed rides. I feel like "CA Screamin'" will become "Donald's Daring Journey" haha! What are your thoughts? Thanks! P.s. What happened to the Mali boomer!!!!!

In condor flats inside the fly n buy, there is (i am sure most of you have seen it) an old belly tank race car on the hydrolic lift.

I am a member on the hamb message board, a hot rodders forum. I posted the photos of the belly tanker and someone claims they know of the car and that it was built in the early 90's and was once raced on the salt flats of historic bonnyville. I am still investigating more about the history. This may be a case of mistaken identity as belly tankers tend to look alike.

As they change the lands of dca into the 1920's do you think condor flatts will be changed? If so I would assume they would put the tanker in storage or would sell it. If they were to sell it, how would one get to be first in line to purchase it? Anyone know? Any cm's know how that works?

Thanks,

I was researching some videos, trying to find what DCA did for New Year's. I assumed they would do just a water show.

Well, I came across this video: YouTube - New Year 2011 at Disney California Adventure

I have to say that they did an incredible job! Fireworks!? Really? How about we see those more often?

It seems like they just had fun. They didn't use their own audio for the whole show, they just played the best songs for 2010. Very relaxed feeling, but fun. The water show was of course great, and the new projections on Screamin' are awesome. Applause, Disney!

However, I forgive Disney this time, but next time leave out Justin Bieber. Please and thank you.

Was anyone there? Any thoughts?

Happy New Year!

If Walt Disney World guests cover the gamut of shapes and sizes, it seems the guests of Disneyland and California Adventure comprise an entirely...

If Walt Disney World guests cover the gamut of shapes and sizes, it seems the guests of Disneyland and California Adventure comprise an entirely different lot. During my visit last week, I was surrounded by young blonde beauties with silicone enhancements in all the right areas and blindingly white teeth, and young men with jet blackened hair or none at all, bronzed faces, bulging biceps and perfectly placed tattoos. It was Southern California's Ken and Barbie show for the new century! But it was also a good complement and imagery to describe the transformation of Anaheim's second Disney theme park.

California Adventure has truly become Disney's Complete About-face. Eschewing the "hip and edgy" focus of 2001, this Disney ugly duckling is changing rapidly. The new-park-in-the-making is heading back to the future with immersive theming, Disney charm, and old school, story-rich attractions. The wait is half over as the surgeons complete their work

Having been to the Disneyland Resort last year about the same time- and the differences in this park (and my trip report and impressions) couldn't be more different than if I was comparing the park of 2001 to the park of today. I had one day to cover both parks this time. Thankfully, it was an overcast day, so my one day park hopper- along with some advance planning- brought me 23 attractions between two parks, leisurely strolls for exploration, and a "blue" ticket for World of Color. For this post, I'll focus on California Adventure alone.

Having seen all the latest photo updates, I thought I'd had a good feel for the current state of things. I was wrong. Nothing beats first person visuals. Approaching the gates, it was rather strange to see the right mural dismantled, and later, the sun sculpture following suit. With half of Paradise Pier behind walls and the Bountiful ValleyFarm area a distant memory, the whole of the park felt under the knife of surgery. Much like Heidi Montag before and after- and during

The line for a World of Color ticket was the longest line I waited in all day for either park- about 15 minutes- and I was at the gates just minutes after opening. Going into Condor Flats, I was reminded how much I liked this area of the park and just how much I disliked the fact that Fly 'N' Buy had become another generic Disney merchandise location versus the unique offering it once was. Not too sure about how Fastpass for the show worked, so I skipped getting one for Soarin' Over California, the one attraction at California Adventure that I never miss. No worries, my wait later on was one single ride cycle. In fact, I never bothered with another Fastpass all day

The not-too-golden ticket in hand, Grizzly River Run just seemed like a bad idea at the time, so I wandered through bathroom row (San Francisco), turned into Paradise Pier and headed for Silly Symphony Swings. Beautiful building, well positioned, and a very enjoyable ride over Paradise Bay. Very enjoyable solo ride. No other person in sight. What a difference being out in the open air made instead of being inside a peeling Orange Stinger! Touring the lower level of the building after the ride, I was impressed with the thought and detail put into this simple makeover. And I loved Mickey on top. Well done

Rounding the bend and passing the now defunct Maliboomer was a joy. Continued straight on to California Screamin', passing Toy Story Midway Mania- which posted a forty minute wait already. No single rider line, so it wasn't worth the wait. Not a must see in my opinion.

I had the pleasure of riding the coaster next to someone who hadn't ridden before, her husband betting she wouldn't do it. Laughing through the entire ride once we were past the launch, she kept saying how smooth this was. California Screamin' is a great coaster- and it will be even better with a fresh coast of paint and perhaps even a new queue. The coaster looks horrible- dirty and tired- but the ride is as great as always. The cheap queue and set up do this attraction an injustice.

Glanced at the renamed Paradise Pier Ice Cream Company. Nice changes, nothing more. But it was a reminder to me of how much time we Disney park lovers have invested in watching California Adventure's transformation live and on line. We / I have made so much out of even the littlest changes. Before anyone yells "Fault", I think it is a compliment to Disney Imagineering that we are so passionate about their work. It's brand loyalty the suits love when we spend cash and heap praise; one they disdain (and maybe even mock) when we rightfully attack a poor product or project. The truth is, you cannot have one without the other.

By this point in the morning, I was ready for a brief stop at the Winery tables before entering the Blue Sky Cellar. Sitting there, it hit me how much this park has in common with Florida's Animal Kingdom in one important aspect. In both parks, a sunny day makes all the difference in the world.

With so many of the attractions outdoors, California Adventure designers rely on beautiful weather by the hand of God to complete the perfect lens through which to view the park. When it is sunny and bright, the lush greens of the Golden State's pines provide the perfect backdrop for the sparkling waters around it. The geysers' spray dances in the sun, making getting drenched much more fun. Attractions alongside Paradise Bay have a bit more allure. Even the rather pedestrian streets of the Hollywood Pictures Backlot seem welcoming. On a cloudy and overcast day, the lines are short, but the trade off is the park feels drab and its shortcomings are more obvious.

Surveying the work for Carsland and the incredible looking Radiator Springs Racers, I had one thought in mind: I cannot wait for this to open! Route 66 belongs here, and the towering bluffs will finally create a berm from the outside world, allowing more magic to shine through. Greatly detailed buildings and beautiful neon at night- it's a bit of Disney's Hollywood Studios best atmosphere given a west coast twist. And what can I say that hasn't been said about the land's premier attraction? Cars is not my favorite Pixar movie by a long shot, but the film segment where the characters race through the land is made for an attraction. Test Track rocks, so it is a great match of story and technology. I'll ride Racers every visit just like I do Soarin'. More Disney is a good thing here. Let's just hope the show elements remain working, unlike the Yeti at Animal Kingdom's Expedition Everest!

It was time for Tower of Terror- and a look at the construction surrounding the coming Red Car Trolleys. The ability to connect through Flik's Fun Fair is an improvement in traffic flow. The area is one of the best designed and most charming in the park, and too many adult visitors have missed it in the past.

Ever ridden the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror with only three other people? I did for the first time. Going into the library and then the empty boiler room is an entirely different experience. I slowly explored a few references to the television show. Nice not to be rushed by the folks behind me, but kind of creepy, too. It would be even creepier with a darkened lobby at the beginning to set the tone. However, this was the one time the darkened skies added to the atmosphere. In fact, for a brief moment I wondered if the lightning was real.

Before returning to Disneyland, I wandered into the Blue Sky Cellar, noticed much hadn't changed since my last visit, and decided to return to this park an hour or two before lining up for World of Color.

Flash forward several hours. I stopped in Baker's Field Bakery for a treat and a cup of coffee. Dusk was approaching in about two hours, and I wanted to pause and sit by the train and take in the details found in this soon to be demolished area. The California Zephyr is one of the few original pieces of California Adventure that I will miss. It's elegant with great visual impact and true to theme. Sun Icon- adios. Golden Gate Bridge- goodbye. Maliboomer-see you later. Sun Plaza- meet Buena Vista Street! No loss to any of the old ugly pieces of the past. But to lose this train, a great piece of real history and simple charm- not a good idea. Not at all. Attention Imagineers: If you find a home in this park for the train, you'll win many fans. It fits the new theme beautifully. Walt was a railroad buff after all.

Finishing my coffee, a bit of hang gliding was next on my agenda. Front row- first time since my first visit in 2001. Nice, really nice. Being a Californian in Colorado, Soarin' always brings a tear to my eyes.

Since the skies had warmed up, I jumped in a nonexistent line for Grizzly River Run. What a blast to ride as the sun is disappearing into the horizon. The details on the ride seem to be increasing, and I hear there are more to come. (Were there always "miners" sound effects in the caves?) For water rides as these, the other riders make or break the journey, and in this case, a nice crew from Northern California were the perfect rafters to share a journey with.

Almost time to queue for World of Color, but I had time for a trip to Monstropolis. Again, no line. The quirky Superstar Limo was laughable in not a good way. I was worried Disney would continue to "cheap out" as they transformed the ride to Monsters Inc, but they did not go the route I expected. Monsters is among my favorite "C" ticket dark rides in any Disney park. Mike, Sully, and Boo are great characters, the effects terrific, and the storyline great fun.

Time for the nighttime spectacular. The thirty five minute wait passed rather quickly due to the color patterns on the Fun Wheel. The set up is rather messy, and I much prefer the take your chances approach used for Disneyland's Fantasmic. Personally, I think this is just the suits way of presenting World of Color as an event. If it is difficult to see and expensive to do it the best, it must be something special. Guess it works.

Much has been written about this new century Disney extravaganza, so I keep it brief. The music soars, the images are somewhat blurry, a story is unnecessary, and the water fountains bring a brand new dimension to the night. I just wish the after show would have lasted longer. Being in the back of the viewing area, I could easily see the higher streams shooting up, but the richer amazing colors of the smaller jets were harder to see. As with Epcot's Illuminations, the Imagineers' new show is a fitting way to end the evening, but I wish it were only the beginning of a few more hours to tour the park at night. California Adventure has always shone better after dark, and riding Screamin' over a neon lit bay is a different thrill than riding during the day. Why not get more play out of all that atmosphere from the Pier in the evening?

I ended my Disney day at this point, aside from a walk through Downtown Disney. I strolled through the night tired but happy as I realized the Disney Magic was finally ready to strike twice in Anaheim. I do not get to Walt Disney World very often, as family is in Southern California not Florida. My Disney fix comes from the west coast. To say I was disappointed in California Adventure in 2001 would be saying the obvious.

Having blogged on so many trip reports to the Disney resorts, I was surprised I had so much to say this time! When the calendar hits 2012, it will be a difficult choice should I have only one day to visit a park. I'll always love Disneyland, but at least for awhile, I'll have a love affair with the other park once she's been through surgery. She's working hard to earn my love, and she's almost ready for her second debut.

Alright, here's the review summed up: Don't bother seeing DDC, you won't be missing much. I'm not one for bashing Disney, but even they could do better at this show. I know they're limited on their budget for the rest of DCA but I mean come on, put some thought into it. Don't just have people dancing on the stage, then have Mickey come out then they dance some more. Why are they there? Why does Mickey come out of nowhere? These are the types of questions that Imagineering answers, but this time, we're left in the dark. It's a waste of 10 minutes, and I don't recommend seeing it unless you want to meet Mickey, which you can at the end. -VJ

I don't understand why Disney's California Adventure is bad mouthed by so many people! True, if I only had one day to spend at the park every few years, I would probably spend it at Disneyland Park. But everytime we have gone since we first went after DCA was opened, we have spent at least one day, if not more, at DCA. It is a wonderful enhancement to the Disneyland Resort! California Soarin', Grizzly River Run, It's a Bug's life, MuppetVision 3D, Aladdin, and the many shows and attractions that I haven't mentioned. They all provide depth and breadth to the Disney experience. I look forward to going to DCA just as much as I do Disneyland Park. I feel DCA compliments Disneyland Park and would miss it very much if it were to disappear. Also, really looking forward to Carsland!

I'm personally looking forward to the new "main street" entrance to the park. I'm hoping it gives DCA that same welcoming feeling that DL gives you.

Last night they were testing some of the jets...Was pretty cool:)..At first I was like this is lame...they weren't shooting very high..Then while on Cali Sreamin they rose to almost 200 ft..was really cool...I tried to take pics but everyone came out blurry...I think once they've tested all the jets and drop the platform into the water it's going to be pretty spectacular..Now if they could keep the park open long enough for the sun to go down it would be great...LOL...LOL...I was told(rumor) that the fountains will operate all day like the Bellagio...just a WOC light show for night...
