Hey everyone.

A Space Mountain castmember told me and my friend yesterday that the Matterhorn was getting a big refurbishment in September. She was telling us alot of trivia about Disneyland because we were the first riders on Space Mountain for the day and we got to sit wherever we wanted. Well, I was just wondering what they might be doing to the Matterhorn. Uptating it? New track?

What are your thoughts?

Matterhorn goes down for a big refurb every so often. It's just about Matterhorn's time for another one. Not a big deal.

yes to keep its realibility up they have to have long downtimes. If something went wrong on matterhorn such as a car de-railing think about car goes flying! not a good thing, and i don't think they'd be allowed to replace the track because didn't the state of california declare it a "landmark" if they did i don't think they'd be allowed to change the track.

Hmmmm. That's too bad, I was really hoping that they would replace the track because it feels to jerky.

I think that they might be building a ride where you can climb the matterhorn mountain

That's probably very unlikely, but you never know. Disney hires professionals to climb the Matterhorn so that we can watch.

I think this wont happen. My bro probably told you that. He worked on the matterhorn for 2 years and he lies to guests all the time.

Being officially declared a Landmark would not interfere with improvements like changing the track. All that means is that it can't be torn down or have it's facade significantly altered, which Disney would never do anyway.

Hope they just make it smoooth like they did to Space Mtn.

if they do anything to it, i hope they make it taller so it can go for a longer ride, longer ride means more cars which also means that more people can be on the ride at once

Probably not a big deal. Maybe the yeti needs to have it checked and to have a closer inspection of the tracks that people might overlook when they were looking before the day begins.

ya, its probably just going down for it's regular refurb. but u never know. Disney does last minute things! maybe new yeti enhancements beacuse of the opening of Expedition Everest in WDW

Guys, relax, this is a normal refurb. Nothing to get antsy about or start spinning wild theories about. Remember the last refurb? The biggest thing to come out of that was a new strobe light, which was cool. Every theme park attraction in existence must undergo a period of refurb every so often, just like your car, to ensure its proper running and long-term health. That's all that's going on here. It's not being done in response to Everest or anything else.

LOL i remember for 3 years straight every time i went the matterhorn was being refurbed made me mad. Anyone every think they are making the yeti better? because of the new everest ride? i dont think they are i think its maitence, it is an old ride and kinda dangerous as someone said above "what if a car derails", its gonna kill. also last time i went on the track on the right it was not as jerky as the one on the left.

PeoplemoverMatt
03-14-2006, 10:47 PM
^ What if it derails? It could kill!

Right and what if the moon's made of cheese, my teacher is an alien, 2+2=5, and Pirates gets changed to be based off the movie? ....oops. But seriously, what if I wake up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet?

Matterhorn is old, yes, but that doesn't mean it's hasn't had any parts replaced in its lifespan. That ride is as well engineered for safety as any other ride out there and is probably inspected the most because of its age. It's no more prone to parts flying off & the like as any other roller coaster. If you're afraid of them, well, look up the statistics of fatalities and injuries on that freeway you took to get to the park to ride that rolling machine of death!

LOL i was saying its prolly just maitenced more cause if it derails it has a high chance to kill many unlike indy or many other park attractions which may just cause discomfort or injury.

Wait the moon isn't made of cheese? Wow! lol but I think that the chance of the Matterhorn having any major things changed is highly unlikely. The ride is too popular as it stands.

Yep, that's why I prefer the Fantasyland side. It's not as jerky, but still just as exciting, IMO.

I refuse to ride with more than one person because it's so jerky. It makes the lines longer but it's a lot more comfortable.

no being declared a landmark would not interfere with DL doing improvements, enhancement and or repairs. you have to be able to maintain the system.

That's funny! I prefer to ride with someone else because I think having an extra person helps to buffer the jerkiness(<is that even a word?);) . My friend and I tried to ride alone, and it was more painful then normal. Although, we are crammed in pretty tight, we prefer to ride together! And I like the tommorow land side better!

Back on topic...........I don't think they would do anything major to it. Just a refurb, I hope:p

I love the Matterhorn its a total icon, but its very very very jerky.

PeoplemoverMatt
03-16-2006, 12:03 PM
^ Aaron, you may not be aware, but Matterhorn was the very first roller coaster ever to use tubular steel track. That track isn't like a worn out piece of scotch tape you just thoughtlessly rip out & replace. It is herky-jerky, and that is a good thing I think. It gives the ride a lot of character in its old age. Since it is, in a sense, the grandfather of all coasters, everything should be done to maintain Matterhorn in its original condition. Any other ride in this state, I would agree, needs an almost complete replacement. But Matterhorn is special & ought to be treated as such.

yay matt LOL but no funny lil ending? wheres the

peoplemover "i like the matterhorn the way it is." matt LOL

you need to put something so we know its really you. LOL but back on topic i think the jerky track also matches the some-what "story line" you dont really think when you go bobsledding its smooth sailing do you? this reminds me of my favorite winter moving. "Cool runnings", man. LOL just watch them bobsled down the hill and you will notice how jerky it is for them. LOL

The Matterhorn really only needs new bobsleds, like what Splash Mountain received. The lap sitting is awful and can create a bad ride very fast. It needs a similar type of vehicle to Space Mountain.

ThisI agree with. I like the jerky track. I like the Tomorrowland side just as much as the Fantasyland side, but the Tomorrowland side is definitely jerkier.

Engineers invented the steel tube rails because Walt did not want the ride to be jerky like the old rollercoasters, he wanted a smooth ride.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I am going a little off topic here, but yesterday I was on the Matterhorn and it broke down. A castmember took us out of out bobsleds and guided us through the mountain. It was soo cool! There were soo many supports and I saw the elevator that leads to the basketball court!

This detailed book is all about the history of thrill rides:
Roller Coasters, Flumes and Flying Saucers (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0965735354/104-1383228-9483156?v=glance&n=283155) by Robert R. Reynolds.
Read this to find out exactly how instrumental Walt Disney's requests and suggestions were to the advancement of amusement technology.

It's funny that you say this. In another thread (http://www.visionsfantastic.com/forum/showthread.php?p=64828#post64828) you said:
I think the Matterhown needs a little updating. I think all they need to do is to work on the track and get new bobsleds, hopefully with a capacity of 12-16 riders without lap sitting. The Matterhorns line isn't very long even with the current bobsleds but the line always appears longer than it really is, which may detur guests.

...how? I love the idea of lap sitting. Makes the experience of riding and having fun with family that much better. If you feel awkward about it, then just go seperate. I love the concept of the family holding on to each other instead of just watching/hearing their reaction in a nearby seat.

Regarding the book Ezra mentioned...
"This detailed book is all about the history of thrill rides:

Our friend Jason Surrell of Haunted Mansion/Pirates book fame is starting his
next informative book about "The Mountains Of Disney"
ie: Matterhorn, Splash, Big Thunder, Everest, Space & Grizzly Peak.
That'll be extra cool & give a fitting tribute to the classic Matterhorn we all know & love...the jerky one...

Thanks

I really think a new updated Yeti would add to the experience. you don't have to have him like everest, but atlest have him move!!!!

I agree PMM! I also think that lap sitting helps to buffer some of the bumps while on the attraction. I tried riding it alone before and it was much more painful then when I rode together with my friend. That is the only way we will sit now!

Riding the Matterhorn with my mom as a child is a wonderful family memory. I alwyas remember her holding onto me tightly, and I felt so safe!:p

they move throughout both parks

Yeah, that's why we see different people, when we return to the same attraction and another ride.

I love the lap sitting!!! I went on it with my best friend and I was screaming in her ear the whole time, lol we still joke about it. Also sitting with my boyfriend wasn't half bad.... ;)
