I used a JVC GRHD1U video camera to film a friends wedding. I set my settings to SD but forgot to set the aspect ratio to 4:3 and left it on 16:9. The problem I am now having is is that my computer at home an Apple 733 Quicksilver running FCP HD won't see the footage. I have full deck control, the computer recognizes the camera name and model. It will capture footage shot in 4:3, just not 16:9. Now I did set my capture settings to match the video and still nothing. I also tried at work since I use Premiere Pro HD and it still did the same thing. I filmed this in November and I still have yet to edit it and I am going mad. Can anyone help me with this or have any suggestions? Thanks all.

You can use this to transfer the video:
http://www.download.com/BTV-Pro/3000-2200_4-10213578.html?tag=lst-0-1
Then import resulting .avi into FCP.

Thanks for the link. I did find out that the problem does lie in the camera. If you record in 16:9 DV not HD then the camera, through the firewire, is trying to send the signal for image size and deck controls. Well the software can't deal with it so it won't see the video, but you have deck control. I tried on both Mac-FCPHD and PC Premiere ProHD and neither can handle it. I guess my question to you would be, can this program you linked me to handle the stream and capture the video? Otherwise I have to figure a way to go deck to deck through the RCA cords so the deck controls don't go through and confuse anything. I hope this can help clarify my problem. Thanks for your help.

i'm not a MAC user but it sounds like a software issue. something like a codec possibly.

Try viewing stuff with iMovie just to see if it works. FCP 4.5 and 5 should both be able to handle it though.

Nice to see you around again Almandot. Hope all is well. I did try using IMovie and the same thing happened. I found out that it is a flaw in the cameras. JVC is not a good brand in my opinion. I was able to borrow an analog to digital converter and got it to work. Hooray. Lesson learned out of this though is don't shoot in 16:9 on a JVC camera. No software was able to handle or wnat to handle the information. Thanks guys for all your help.

Actually. I just got my camera and have been messing with it and I know where the problem lies I think. You have to make sure that when you're capturing in final cut pro, you set the video format to DV NTSC Anamorphic.. also in whatever sequence you're working with, right click it, choose settings, and set that one's size to 16:9 anamorphic too. Your camera stores it stretched out in full screen even though you're doing a wide screen. When you export it, you'll also have to make sure to do a resolution that's at the proper ratio for 16:9.

Yeah that is what is weird. I set my settings for 16:9 anamorphic. Everytime I would go to capture it would start the process than stop and say it can't find any video and would then end the process, yet I have complete deck control. The model of JVC camera I used has issues. It is one of their first HD cameras they came out with, although I used the SD feature on it. I have called about inquiring on this camera and the flaw as well and everyone I talked to and told them the camera model all gave me that "Ohhhhhhhhh...." response. Which is also why we don't use them here at work and have been trying to get rid of them. Another not so good feature to these cameras is the fact that you cannot adjust both the F-stop and shutter speed together. One is always auto and the other is manual. That really puts a damper on things when shooting in a low light situation. To put it in a nutshell, I tried all sorts of settings from inside the camera to each editing software and computer I could and nothing worked, but I was able to get the footage into the computer using an analog to digital converter. Not to happy I had to go that route, but it worked.
