Pixar chief asserts his authority over Disney by axing 'Toy Story 3'
To infinity but not beyond as merger brings successful series to an end
By Jason Niss?
Published: 29 January 2006
John Lasseter, the creative chief of Pixar Animation Studios, has wasted no time asserting who is boss after Pixar's takeover by Walt Disney - by stopping production of Toy Story 3, the controversial sequel to the two wildly successful animated films.
The original Toy Story, completed in 1995, was the first major collaboration between Pixar and Disney. The highly lucrative partnership went on to produce the hits Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc and The Incredibles.
----------------------------------------
No word on what is going to happen to the Disney team of animators who were hired explicitly to create this movie. I'd heard that Lasseter had his own concept of a storyline for Toy Story III, so I had hoped they'd re-tool and make his version of the movie. Instead, there's NO version of a sequal.
One less sequel in the world won't kill me, though.

I am glad they are not doing a 3rd one. Bring on something new and different. Get away from the sequels.

I did read either a NYT or LAT article (wish I could link which one). About Lasseter's reasons behind the axing. Basically, he has a super secret idea on how it should end as a trilogy and it had NOTHING to do with Buzz getting recalled to Japan, as Disney envisioned. It may get made some day, but not as the monstrosity imagined.
To which I say....THANK GOD FOR JOHN LASSETER!!!!!!!!!

I agree, one sequel is enough. Don't drag it out, run over it, chop it up, dice it, slice it, ground it, and kill it. How about some "NEW" ideas that keep the company NUMBER ONE!!! in the entertainment world?

Add my name to the list of people happy to see that this project got the ax. As much as I love Toy Story 1 & 2, I'd really rather not see it done by anyone other than Pixar (from start to finish).
Well, the story as reported just says that Lasseter is stoping production of TS3. That may only mean the current production which we all knew wouldn't go on once a new Disney/Pixar deal was struck. There's still a chance for a Pixar in-house version, If Lasseter wants one. But of course the current production would get the axe either way. I think the subtitle to this article is making an unnecessary assumption.
This is good news: We don't have to suffer through the Buzz gets recalled to Taiwan plot. What exactly would be the message of that picture? That childeren should insist on keeping potentially dangerous toys? That parents should ignore serious product warnings? Not exactly something I can get behind. Honestly, now, what were they thinking?

Considering the quality of Disney sequels spilling out of the Animation Dept. during recent years, I would consider this a good thing.
SHOW 'EM HOW IT'S DONE, LASSETER!

Good call, Lasseter. If they do make a Toy Story 3, I want it to be good. The recall plot was definitely sub-par, just like many of the other Disney-made sequels that came straight to video. It would also be nice to see some new material from this newly-saved studio. Speaking of new material, Cars looks pretty funny...

Hmmm... just saw at SciFiWire today that Toy Story 3 is happening, but that Pixar is taking it over... http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?id=34529
If Lassiter is in control, I wont mond a #3. If it is anyone else - can you say stright to DVD.
I think the blue fairy should show up and turn them into real boys. Oh wait, that has been done already. ;)

What are you talking about? The best movies come in 3s: Star Wars, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, Austin Powers...
'sides, I kinda would like to see how Jessie and Bullseye fit in with the other toys in Andy's room

Eh, I'm sure a Toy Story III wouldn't have been good anyway...my best guess is that it wouldn't have Tom Hanks or Tim Allen.

^^what are you talking about? all the originals were planned to be asked to return...John Ratzenburger stated he wouldn't do it unless Pixar took over...you can't be sure of anything.

^^but you said "I'm sure a Toy Story III wouldn't have been good anyway"
but you said "I'm sure a Toy Story III wouldn't have been good anyway" Not with the whole recalled to Taiwan storyline, it wouldn't.
I just read in a piece by Jim Hill (http://www.jimhillmedia.com/article.php?id=1844) that John Lasseter and the late Joe Ranft had a story in mind for TS3 while still working on TS2. Now that the Circle 7 production is shut down, there's a gap in 2008 that perhaps the Pixar TS3 can fill. Lasseter has already nixed sequels for Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo, but The Incredibles franchise is still on the table.

I wanted toy story 3! Why arn't they doing it anymore?
Because Disney had started the project without Pixar, pre-merge. Pixar hated the story and gave the project the ax. Plus, the deaths of Jim Varney and especially the great Joe Ranft would make the voice changes obvious. Little kids notice these things! That's also why A Bug's Life II cannot be made. A sequel without Madeline Kahn and Jonathan Harris (and Ranft) wouldn't be worth it.

I don't see why a 3rd one would be bad. I mean Shrek 3 is in the works and although it may not be as good as the first 2 I'm sure its going to kill at the box office. So I say bring on TS3

Now that Eisner is gone, it's all about quantity and not $$ at the box office. That's the way it should be! If a movie is not going to be good, why even make it? It makes the company look bad!

What characters did they voice?
I also heard the project is back on, but with Pixar this time.
The Disney version was officially canceled when they shuttered the doors of Circle 7 studios. That was aparently part of the merger deal.
I also heard the project is back on, but with Pixar this time. I read that on Jim Hill Media, but it was admitted to be a speculation. Pixar is playing their hand close to the chest, and I can't say I blame them. It is back in Pixar's control now though, so maybe they will do it..

I feel that they should definitely make a Toy Story 3. I don't know about the the recalled to Taiwan thing, but I liked TS2 just as much as I liked the first one. I don't think that they would make the third one any less entertaining.
I've seen some news stories that say Circle 7's TS3 is scrapped, but that Pixar will do one. ...but the stories admit that it's gossip around Hollywood. If I find anything with a decent source, I'll post it.

^I guess they can't make up a good story to go along with it. Maybe we can make up an idea and submit it or something...hey! It was just a thought:
"Worlds are turned on such thoughts" -Mel Brooks
I read on Jim Hill Media that pixar already had a story in mind. Supposedly it's a story about Jesse. Then When Eisner & Co. began recruiting computer animators to work on the recalled to Taiwan version, it was as a ploy to lure John Lasseter into negotiating a new contract. All it really did was tick him off, and he stopped talking to Disney completely until Eisner anounced that he was leaving.
Man I was also looking foward to the Movie [down]
According to Wikipedia Toy Story 3 is in production.:p
