I heard at Mouseinfo.com Steven Spielberg is making a Mary Poppins movie. I think it's a scandal. This is an outrage. He's giving Disney a bad name! SOMEBODY STOP THAT MAD MAN! ARE YOU WITH ME?

Ummmmmm!!!! I hope he isn't doing a remake. There is nothing wrong the the original. So Mary Poppins's umbrella will be replaced with a walkie-talkie, and the neighbor with the cannon on the roof will be changed to a garden since cannons promote violence, right?

And the whole cast will be played by Ewoks.
Just so happened the episode of South Park where Spielberg and Lucas set out to remake their flicks was on last night. Coincidence? I think not.
If he is making a new version, it won't be as great as what Disney has. He doesn't have the author's input at all since Travers is dead and she did a lot when it came to the script as much as a pain she was. I really hope it doesn't fall through.

Dark Horizons points to Spielberg Films, where the rumor of Steven Spielberg hoping to shoot a Mary Poppins remake finally comes to rest. Steven Spielberg's rep Marvin Levy responds, "I never heard of this and couldn't imagine Steven ever doing a remake of a classic - and a [Walt Disney] classic at that. There's a Broadway show from Disney but nothing involving us in any way."
So... it's not true. You can all give a sigh of relief now.

Spielberg has never directed a musical. In fact, I don't think he's even produced a musical. So, how do you know for a fact that Spielberg is not good with musicals?

So, let's ignore that message I posted earlier. The one in italics. About Spielberg's representative totally crushing the rumor.
Here, just to make life easier:

If that doesn't do it, here's the links:

Why would Spielberg remake Mary Poppins? He needs to make Indiana Jones 4 first.

I think that Spielberg helped with the original Star Wars trilogy or so, but not 100% sure. :icon_ques

There was nothing wrong with War of the Worlds. Why stop him? Plus I think a remake would be great. You guys need to stop living in the past.

Nope. People always equate Spielberg and Lucas because of Indiana Jones, but Spielberg wasn't involved with Star Wars.

No. The entertainment industry needs to stop living in the past and stop remaking things. Did they hit a lull in their creative department? Why don't we just remake Indiana Jones as well, but use Vin Diesel as Indiana? Or Star Wars with Freddy Prince Jr. as Luke? Are they hurting for new material that bad?

There making Indiana Jones 4 as we speak
And anyway. Its not that theres no new material. Theres enough material. Its just because of all the advances in movie making technology. Thats why they remake everything. I mean like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's effects were amazing.

Yes, I heard about Indiana Jones 4!! I cant wait for it. The movie might possibly be based about a new Indiana figure, maybe his son.. idk. But, Ford is most likely out of the question for playing Indiana again. Anyways..
Remakes are good for the movie buisness and for the viewers. Think about it, the parents who grew up with the originals could go to the theaters and see the remake with their kids and they would have something they can all relate to in one way another..
And remaking the movie is also good because it connects with a new generation unlike what the classics do for todays era or people.

On the one hand, the idea of remaking Mary Poppins is stupid, since the original is a masterpiece and it still stands the test of time. On the other hand, if someone was going to remake it, I'd want it to be Spielberg.

OK ok ok... im in this one... not because i necessarily believe it will happen... but due to the above quoted comment. thsi represents a trend that I find sickening. I noticed it when I was in school and now that I teach school.
young, trendy people of america.... you know the ones Im talking at... the ones that wait for carson daily and britney spears to tell them what is good and bad.... listen carefully now....
NOT EVERYTHING THAT IS OLD IS BAD.
In fact I would say, that on the grand scale, what is old is in many ways superior. Especially in the arenas of film, music, and art. For example... old music... guys like... elvis.... old swing band like Glenn Miller or Benny Goodman... jazz wizards like Louis Armstrong... the classical giants... they all came from an age in which one had to have TALENT... people who knew how to play their instruments... using them for something other than for pummeling speakers. Singers had to be... GOOD. not just look hot in a tube top and low cut jeans.
Art is another example... in the old days... a guy had to know how to paint... now just any hobo can splatter a canvas and find deep meaning?
this brings me to film. any of us who have seen classic film... we know that so very much of it is EXCELLENT. it came from a day when alot of special effects didnt exist. writers had to rely on writing and actors had to.... ACT!
Movies were driven along by things like... a story... and dialouge. the criteria for actors was acting. they couldnt fill minutes of screen time with explosions, car chases, and nudity, but on the other hand, they didnt need to. the movie stood alone and was excellent.
has anybody noticed that so very few original ideas come from hollywood anymore? its like... remake after remake... adaptation after adaptation. there are some that were super good... even needed... like narnia... lotr.... stuff like that. but can anyone even begin to fathom a remake of... its a wonderful life?... casablanca?.... how about a godfather... just with street gangs.
some things are best left alone. if parents wish their kids to add mary poppins in there with harry potter and lemony snickett, they can buy the dvd of the original... now many oscar noms did the original get? and how many wins? tons. just leave the movie be. come up with something.. oh i dunno... new. original. find a bood that isnt a movie yet... or better yet, force hollywood writers to... create... invent... innovate.

Kodiak, you rock. You summed it up very nicely. Why remake a movie that obviously is still a very strong movie? I guess 75% of Hollywood's creativity is gone. If not more.
