Do you think there is a Basketball Court in the Matterhorn Bobsleds Mountain? Yes or No? What do you think?

There is a basketball hoop, and not much else up there. You couldn't call it a full court. It is more like a quarter-court. I have seen pictres of it(with Vlade Divac shooting).

That other guy is Brian from Mark and Brian. They're a morning radio duo on 95.5 KLOS in Los Angeles. I listened to that program when that photo was taken. They were debuting Toon Town that day and Brian got to play one-on-one with Vlade.

I found out more about where it is from some the the guys who climb the Matterhorn daily. It's halfway up. How do they get to the hoop?

I though that area was occupied by the large rigging now used to control the tink FX. I could be wrong though.

As of 2000 there was still a basketball hoop in the Matterhorn, along with a half inflated basketball. I never saw a basketball hoop in Splash Mountain while I worked there in 1997-2000.

its only a half court. but yes, it does have a hoop, free-throw line, a key, 3-point line. read about it Mouse Tales, a really cool book.

The basketball "court" is a little over halfway up the inside. It's actually more or less a hoop nailed to a support beam, and a free throw line painted on the floor. If you listen to the official Disneyland Podcast, they tour the inside of the Matterhorn and give some very interesting details behind the scenes. There's a lot of history having to do with those mountain climbers than we realized.

they put the hoop up there beause after the matterhorn was built, anaheim had a rule that only buildings of that height may exist if it was a sporting venue. so Disney put a hoop in it so it would count as a sporting arena. Thats what I heard. not sure if it is entirely correct.

Ok, let's end this rumor once and for all!

A small, attic-like space near the top of the Matterhorn structure does indeed contain a basketball rim, backboard, and floor markings. (This cramped area is smaller in size than a regulation half-court, so the term "basketball court" is used rather loosely here.) This common piece of Disney lore Shirts or skins? has it that Disneyland's Matterhorn house a basketball court because at the time it was built, an Anaheim city ordinance prohibited the building of structures exceeding a certain height — with the single exception of sports facilities. In order to skirt this law, crafty ol' Walt Disney supposedly had a "basketball court" installed within the Matterhorn so that he could claim the structure to be a sports arena and thereby avoid the height restrictions. This legend is nothing more than a bit of fanciful fun: the Matterhorn was finished in 1959, but the city of Anaheim did not have regulations restricting the height of structures until the 1970s (and even if they had, they wouldn't have allowed Disney to get away with such a blatant violation of them based on semantic trickery).

The small area atop the Matterhorn is used as a rest and preparation area for the costumed climbers who sometimes entertain park guests by scaling the mountain. According to the Disney Channel program "Inside Out," the basketball court came to be when one of these climbers brought in and installed a basketball hoop and backboard for use as an amusement to pass the time when inclement weather or other conditions prevented the climbers from working outside the mountain.

That's a legend, like the golden spike marking the geographical center of Disneyland, that is untrue.
