All right everybody! This thread is for you crazy baseball fanatics like me who just love america's national pastime. Start talking baseball! All right I'll go first. In today's news: the Texas Rangers destroyed the LA Angels 18-5 and on left fielder Garret Anderson's 33rd birthday! GA went deep in the third for good measure. Tomorrow the Halos head to Kansas City to take on the Royals for a three game series. The Angels will send righty Paul Byrd to the hill tomorrow at 5:10 Pacific Time against Royals right-hander Runelvys Hernandez.

Almandot, I went to that game May 23, against the White Sox and I saw Ervin Santana pitch his first ever complete game shutout of his career. It was a lot of fun. Ersty made two great catches by reaching into the Sox dugout and snaring two foul balls. The sad thing is that Vladdy was not in that game. He was on the DL. Juan Rivera played right field. GA was the DH in that game and Jeff Davanon was the left fielder. So I have to say that Santana still has a ways to go but I think that he become a great pitcher.

The thing is I live in San Diego now. I lived in Orange County for like 12-14 years. Our Fox Sports Net channel down here is channel 29. Whenever the game is supposed to be on they always brodcast Totally Nascar or The Best **** Sports Show Period. That makes me mad, so the only time I get to watch my Angels is when the game is brodcast on ESPN or ESPN2. I am going to beg my parents to order MLB Extra Innings so I can watch my team more often. Hopefully.

Oscar Robles' 5 hits and a clutch 2RBI hit by Chin-Feng Chen lead the Blue Crew to an extra inning victory tonight in Denver. Hopefully this will spark the team into better play into the future, but I doubt it. A 12-2 start sparked us into a 27-40 run though tonight. Division is still up for grabs though & our boys can get her done.

Considering that last year the D-backs had the worst record in the league, they're not doing to bad. The interesting thing is that This year the teams they do best against are the teams in their own division, whereas last year they were OWNED by those teams. Of course, with the worst record, they were pretty much owned by all teams....
Just waiting to see what the second half brings. Second ain't bad, but those pesky Dodgers don't seem to want to let them keep it.

AL does it again... for the eighth year in a row! Who got MVP? Fox switched over to the news as soon as Rivera threw the last strike!
I HATE how Fox broadcasts baseball. They add a bunch of extra stuff that is not needed, or even enjoyed. Things such as the diamond cam. This, in my opinion, is a big waste of money. It is not lined up to be a pitch indicator (so you can see what is a ball and what is a strike), and all it offers is a bad view of the batter. The commentary is useless, and the camera work is terrible. They always show dugout shots or fan candids, then flash to the batter as the ball crosses the plate. I don't want to see who is in the stands or who is talking to who in the dugout. Save these for the commercial que shots. Show the game during game time! The cameras also tend to miss plays or get behind where the ball is. Not to mention that Fox is the main Yankee's carrier. In other words, THEY ARE PART OF THE EVIL EMPIRE! [/rant against Fox baseball]
I am quite happy over the AL win, though! Thank you, Terry! (Clap! Clap! Clap-Clap-Clap!)

^ Last I checked, the Yankees had their own TV network: YES Network. If anything FOX would be the Dodgers' main carrier seeing as Newscorp used to own the Dodgers. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I saw the Yankees on FOX Saturday Baseball.
As for the All-Star game itself...AL won...AL gets home field advantage...what a stupid rule. In the NBA home court is viewed as something they play all regular season for, it's earned. Having the all-star game decide home field advantage when the all-star game by nature gives the AL an advantage is just idiotic. Why does the AL have an advantage? Well it's because AL lineups aren't built around pitching & defense, they're largely built to whack the ball out of the park. So put NL pitchers against that, add to the fact each pitcher is seen once at the most, and the AL has a decided advantage. Still don't believe me? Go look up the alltime records for interleague play and see what the AL vs NL record is. Please don't equate the World Series itself here, that is a different arena on an entirely different plane. Since this stupid winner-gets-home-field rule has been put into place, the AL has won every time. The NL might get 1 in the next 10 years but don't hold your breath...

Someone a little angry that the NL stinks at hitting?
JUST KIDDING!!
I agree with what you said. I personally am not a fan of allstar games, because it is much harder to work as a team instead of as an individual. A good example is an event that was made into a movie by Disney. Of course, I'm talking about the 1980 USA hockey team and the movie Miracle. Herb Brooks did not create a team of allstars. He created a team that would work together as a team. This is part of the reason I'm a big Sox fan. Even though many of the players are big players and get a lot of personal attention, the team has excellent team unity. I love the way they play together. A team is like a family, and everybody should be equal.
As for the pitcher hit vs. DH, I believe the pitcher should hit. But I'm not complaining... I love Big Papi!
GreenLantern13
07-13-2005, 07:25 AM
AL has the more oomph hitters but the NL creates its own recipe for losing. When you keep bringing these great pitchers in for only 1 inning at a time it really throws them off and destroys the advantage pitchers can have over a hitter. You don't have to replace them every single inning every time. The AL let its starter go 2 innings. Chris Carpenter, a guy who has 3 complete game shutouts this season alone(and almost had 5), and only made 8 pitches to end the first inning(even with giving up 2 hits), is pulled and replaced for the 2nd.
The 'this time it counts' doesn't drag the NL into the ground, it's the 'this time it counts but still play like it doesn't count and make it a star showcase where everybody on the bench gets to play at least 1 inning' that does.
I agree the concept is stupid and their argument that they can't figure out best overall mlb record to decide home field is stupid.

Yeah the West Coast People got a post-game show with a bunch of junk in it. Miguel Tejada got the All-Star Game MVP and won himself a Corvette from Chevrolet for his solo shot. As for FOX to tell you the truth I'm really not sure who they cover for. Their sports divisions the Fox Sports Divisions such as FSNW (West) covers Angels games and FSNW2 covers Dodgers games. And I think for seattle they have FSN NorthWest or something like that and FSNBA (Bay Area) for Oakland or San Francisco.

I grew up in Southern California. I'm still a dyed in the wool Dodger fan. I've stuck with them through their ups and downs. I also got into the Angels. They were my American League team. I rooted for the Angels from 1971 until this year. And those were some lean years. But, let's face it. There is only one team in Los Angeles. What are the C.E.O.'s in Anaheim doing? Is this just a scheme to broaden the Angel's market, now that they're a winner? True, the Angels may have started in L.A., using Dodger stadium until they had their own. Then they were the California Angels, which I think makes for a great marketing base. But what's the deal? In the A.L. I'm an A's fan now. Sadly, the Angels just don't hold the appeal they once did for me, even with 1988 World Series Champion L.A. Dodgers Mike Sciosscia and Mickey Hatcher on staff. I mean, come on...the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim". That's almost as bad as when the Rams moved to Anaheim and still called themselves the Los Angeles Rams. At least they aren't calling themselves the "Saint Louis Rams of Los Angeles". I still root for them! Why can't Anaheim have the great team their city has fostered for nearly 40 years? Does Disney still have any ownership? What inflluence can they wield? Is a move in the works? What is the fans take on this? P.S. Here's my prediction. I think the Angels will win the A.L. West after Oakland makes a hard run at them. But I think they've peaked early and either Boston or New York will knock them out of a World Series berth. The Dodgers will hang onto third place hovering at about .500 in the N.L. West while San Diego implodes, the Giants continue to struggle, and Arizona climbs to a divisional title. I don't want either scenario to happen but I think it will go down that way. If it doesn't, the Dodgers will win the N.L. West, Cinderella into the World Series, and beat the imposters claiming to be from L.A.!

-- Peoplemover "Blue Crew can actually still make the playoffs! " MattYeah! I've been a Dodger fan all my life. And you know as well as I do that ain't bloody likely! They would have to win the division. I don't think they can make up 9 games in the wild card race. I was happy that they finally won a post-season game last year after an 0-6 playoff record since 1988. But they traded all their best players after those guys had gotten them halfway to the playoffs. What they did to LoDuca I think was an atrocity. He was as potential a true Blue Dodger as Tommy Lasorda! They lost a leader as well as a slugger. Then came all the injuries this year. It's still a team with a lot of spirit. But I'm not happy with the new owners. It's still early. They seem more genuine than FOX ever did but, the jury's still out. Yep. They won 3 in a row. They need 10! Let's hope Milton Bradley can get up to par quickly and stay healthy when he returns. I hope Gagne can be rehabilitated by next season and that they keep him! He can contribute a lot as a veteran to the younger pitchers in the rotation. I think he still has some good pitching left too but, I doubt he will be able to throw as much heat. Wouldn't it be cool if they won their division, Cinderellaed their way into the World Series, and beat that other "LA" team that isn't even in L.A.!? Then the guys in Blue could tell the media "We're going to Disneyland!"

I'm an Angels fan and I agree Paul Lo Duca's trade was horrible no matter what spin the owner wants to put on it. I've never hated the Dodgers and in fact I'm usually cheering for them even if they aren't my #1 team(this whole socal rivalry thing does not exist to me and I don't really like how it's been made into one...making fun of each other is one thing but it's never been a rivalry before and shouldn't be). But seriously...who are you supposed to cheer for? Who's supposed to be the little kid's hero on that team? You can't get attached to anyone there because no matter how special and talented they are(Lo Duca) or how well they perform(Beltre) you might as well save your money on that jersey until the player finds their next team shortly after.
The way the dodgers are going, they probably want Gagne to get rehabilitated not to be their closer but to trade him for some other patching up that needs to be done now.

The way the dodgers are going, they probably want Gagne to get rehabilitated not to be their closer but to trade him for some other patching up that needs to be done now. Jeff Kent comes to mind so far as the kids hero is concerned. When I was a kid, at least before 11 years old, I loved the Dodgers and never had any idea who was in first place. I went to games, got to know the game through my Dad and Grandfather, and had fun! Gagne has only been a one or two inning pitcher for a while now as good as he is. I think it's too late to use him for a patchwork trade. It's fairly certain he won't be ready until at least Spring training anyway. So far as the social rivalry is concerned, the Angel's ownership has attatched the name "Los Angeles" to the team. Parallels are being drawn. We now have intereleague play. The gauntlet has been thrown down. Like it or not a rivalry is brewing. There has been talk for as long as I can remember about the possibility of a "Freeway Series". That is now closer to a reality than it ever has been. And when it happens, the lid is going to come off the pressure cooker. Of course, if one really wants to understand a rivalry they should try dressing in Dodger blue and going to a game at PacBell Park; or whatever they call it now. I did that twice when the Giants played at "the Stick". And I lived to tell about it. I always found it funny that wearing Dodger Blue at Giants stadium was almost suicidal. The times I've seen Giants fans at Chavez ravine people usually ignore them, behave like they're afraid of them, or are downright friendly to them. Every rivalry has its quirks. Of course, if you want social rivalry, wear any team's garb to an Oakland Raider game if you can afford the ticket and a body guard.

You want rivalry? Try being a Sox fan! (the red type)
Speaking of Sox, we pulled out another win, with another scary performance by Schilling. That was a good birthday present, along with Lance Armstrong's stage win. Anyone know how the yankees did? I hope they lost- that would complete my totally awesome birthday!

Well every fan's really supposed to be a fan of the team and not really any individual player on that team. That way trades or free agency or whatever was never meant to matter because fans were supposed to only care about if the team is doing better or worse. That's how I was raised to look at sports & that's the way I look at trades/free agency. Be sad if a player you liked leaves, but be furious if a trade went down that was never meant to help the club win.
As far as the LoDuca/Mota/Encarnacion trade last year goes, remember the plan was to then trade Penny & Murphy in a deal for Randy Johnson and get Finley with prospects. Well the Finley side worked out, but the RJ side fizzled and we were stuck with a lopsided trade for basically Brad Penny. I didn't really mind it seeing as Brad Penny did beat the Yankees twice in the '03 World Series. LoDuca always started off well with the bat and went into the tank in the latter part of the season. No matter how badly you're attached to a guy, what matters is winning & you should always do what would help your team win. The trade last year was meant to help us win, unfortunately we had a rookie GM & we got the short end of the stick.
Now with Beltre, first of all you must remember Beltre's agent was Scott Boras. Remember he was the one responsible for getting A-Rod $25.2M per year & is widley known for getting top dollar for his players. The guy wanted the Dodgers to pay $21M in Beltre's first year of a 7-yr deal! No way was a new owner going to do that, Seattle did, so off Beltre went. If anything Beltre should be spat on for having no loyalty at all to the team that developed him & Seattle looks really stupid now for paying him all that cash to basically be a dud for them. That's all I have to say about Beltre except these 2 words: good riddance.
Gagne will never be traded. Even a rookie GM knows that a relief pitcher that can win a Cy Young Award (Gagne won the 2003 NL Cy Young) and rattle off a record 84 consecutive saves is a 1 in a 1,000,000 player. Gagne was simply 1 of the few thousand injuries we've suffered through this year. The Giants & Pads had some injuries but nothing like we've had. To this day only be approx 6 games back is remarkable. Bradley just came back, Valentin is coming back, so I still have hope. Dodgers for back to back NL West champs!

:icon_shoc Does anyone remember when Angels caps and batting helmets had a halo design on them? I never could figure out what that monkey thing was about? Perhaps they are thinking of "evolving" to Los Angeles! Is anyone out there in Orange County worried? Great team! But I wouldn't want to give 'em up if I were a fan, even in name! And I was an Angels fan during the Gene Autry years! I always rooted for them in the American League. I'll always be true to my Dodgers, even when they are "bums". Since moving north I've taken a liking to the Athletics (I just can't find a way to like the Giants because... I'm a Dodger fan!). I still like the Angels, but THEY AREN'T EVEN IN L.A.! :icon_roll The A's started the season like the Dodgers are playing now. How roles do reverse! Look out Angels! You just may get your wings clipped! Although they've slid a bit recently, how about the job the Washington Nationals are doing in their first year! (Yeah. I know. They were the Montreal Expos. Does that count?)

When we were in you know where, the Padres had lost 10 straight games. But, when we got back today they romped the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-3. The Angels I hope can end their losing skid like the Friar's did soon.

Yah :frown: I saw the end of the dodger game it was all going good untill Steve Schmoll(sp?) came in and (I think that he is a great releiver but not sure right now) The score was 2 to 1 Dodgers when he entered the game it was the 8th inning. He gives up 5 runs and we were down 7 to 1 :frown:. The dogers also scored 2 more runs in the 8th inning so the score going into the 9th was 7 to 4 Phillies:frown::frown: and the Phillies in the 9th scored another run. So the final score was 8 to 4 and the losing pitcher was Steve Schmoll . Brad Penny pitched so well and had no decison in the loss.

Hey peoplemovermatt, how was the game?
Ok so I'm back & if you watched the game then you went on the same emotional roller coaster that I did.
First off Jose Cruz Jr. made his Dodger debut, so yay for that. He didn't hit any HR, no sir, our buddy Jr K'd to end the inning for his first 3 at-bats! Yep, he finished the Dodgers' 1st, 3rd & 5th innings with a nice strike out. Then he walked in 8th. Nice debut Jose.
As for the game itself, it was fairly exciting. The starters were Brett Myers for Philly & Derek Lowe for the Blue Crew. Neither pitcher had an outing they'd hang on their mantle though. Bobby Abreu hit a 2-run HR in the top of the 1st to make it 2-0 Phillies. Jeff Kent hit a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 1st to make it 3-2 LA. Mike Lieberthal singled home Ryan Howard in the top of the 4th to tie it at 3. In the top of the 5th, Pat Burrell hit a double that scored Kenny Lofton to make it 4-3 Phillies. Next batter Ryan Howard grounded out to 2nd which let Bobby Abreu score from 3rd to make it 5-3 Phillies. Milton Bradley came up in the bottom of the 5th & promptly whacked the ball over the CF fence for a 2-run HR; 5-5 tie.
Fast forward to the top of the 9th where the genius Jim Tracy has pulled Lowe, left Sanchez to miraculously not give up a run in 2 innings & put Yhency Brazoban on the mound for LA. Braz promply nails Chase Utley, the first batter he faced, to put the go-ahead run on 1st with no outs. Braz then walks Abreu intentionally, walks Burrell unintentionally & Ryan Howard is up with the bases loaded & nobody out. Dodgers are doomed right? In a word, yes. Ryan Howard took the first pitch he saw & smoked it over the right field fence for a Grand Slam Home Run, 9-5 Phillies. In the bottom of the 9th, Navarro singled but Tomato Saenz grounded into a double play & Izturis grounded out to end it. Final score: 9-5 Phillies :frown:
All in all, it was an exciting, yet depressing game for the Blue Crew. So goes the season. Dodger fans have to remember this is what being a fan of the team is all about. You cheer during the good times & you cry during the bad times. The point is, you stick with the team.

Padres over Angels in 7 games, and though I like the Angels, they won one title in 2002, so this is the year for the city of San Diego.
Nevertheless, in a more realistic fashion: it would be ok to see different teams in the World Series like Houston or the White Sox, demonstrating that you don't need to expend too much money to earn a championship.

Holy horse farts batman! The Angels get completely ripped off. What a bad call that was and it cost them the game. Ouch! Those umpires should never call another game in the playoffs. I'm not a big baseball fan, although I'll follow along in the sports section, but I do watch the playoffs and world series and that has to be one of the worst calls I have ever seen. What made it worse is it helped decide the outcome of the game. Man. They suck.
GreenLantern13
10-13-2005, 12:35 AM
It was a bad call, and the umpire made the out signal and then changed his mind when the player ran to first figuring "oh the player must have seen it hit the dirt." The umpires were way defensive and uncertain about themselves in the post game interview, another official had to explain what the home plate umpire was calling on the play for him because he couldn't even come up with an excuse.
If you're an umpire and you don't see the ball hit the dirt, don't call it hitting the dirt. There's no way he could have seen it hit or even seen the trap frankly based on watching him in replays.
Piglet
10-14-2005, 01:40 PM
That was a bad call, pure and simple! If the ball HAD hit the dirt, we would have seen a dust of dirt popping up! There was none. That was a clean catch, the umpires blew it and couldn't evn back pedal out of it afterwards.
Angels will come back and take this series, don't worry!
CA Screamin Dude
10-14-2005, 04:08 PM
The call about the ball hitting the dirt does not especially concern me. In a game of inches, where the view is obstructed by a body and a mask, that occassionally happens. MLB umpires are correct in their calls more than 99% of the time.
However, what is fairly irritating is the manner in which the play was called. The first signal represents a swinging strike, with no contact. That is especially useful for baserunners (when there are baserunners), if the ball gets away or it is a strike three play (the ball gets away or is caught). However, the next signal represents a stike that has been caught by the catcher for an out. The fist with two strikes had represented an out for the entire game. To signal a dropped third strike, the signs made must include the swinging-strike no contact, and the safe sign. The fact that the umpire signaled an out yet didn't maintain that sign shows that he was not sure of his call, and let Pierzinsky call it for him.
The right field umpire, among other umpires, acted as if the inning was over, as did the Angels, White Sox (who were about to come on the field), base coach, and White Sox Stadium Security.
Piglet

Doug Eddings (homeplate umpire) said in the press conference after the game that he always uses the same mechanics (strike motion followed by a fist) to signify a strike out--but NOT the out which would have ended the inning. He claims if you watched videos of him calling plays in other games, this is what you would consistently see. So the only way to know if he was telling the truth or back peddling would be to do what he suggests and watch his actions in other games. Either way, there needs to be CONSISTENCY in how plays are called and all umpires need to be on the same page so there is no confusion.
CA Screamin Dude
10-15-2005, 11:45 AM
He does not. I have studied Edding's umpiring mechanics and there is no difference between his strike three swinning strike, no contact (and out) call and his call 9th inning days ago. He simply changed the call when he saw the batter running to first base because he wasn't sure, even though his call caused everyone in the stadium save the batter to think the inning was over.

White Sox swept the Astros in 4 straight to win the world series, and this should have been exciting since they have not won a World Series since 1917, but I thought all in all the games were boring. Your right Peoplemover Matt. Nakamoura made his debut on April 10. 6 days after Iguchi made his debut.
Ah, but your question was not who made his MLB debut first, it was who signed first. But regardless...debuting later made him the last Japanese player until Johjima no?
Trivia Question: Who was the 21st japanese born player to sign a contract to play in the BIGS?
And I'm pretty sure Nori signed after Iguchi.
Who is the player who hit 345 career homers at his primary position?
That would be Cal Ripken Jr. with 345 at SS.

Well my favorite player in the game of baseball accepted an offer from the scum of the world themselves. What would Johnny Damon do? Probably just betray his team for a few extra bucks. Damon is no longer my homeboy. Time to go burn my shirt...

My Family is Giants, I'm not, which makes me the outsider. I'm an Angels fan. It doesn't help I'm in the middle of California and so we could go either way. I love Southern Cal. so this is my fav. team.
But why are they called the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim... it's not even in the L.A. county.
PeoplemoverMatt

^ Because that's what Arte Moreno wanted in the hopes of it boosting team revenue. It obviously wasn't what the City of Anaheim wanted, they feel it breached a contract signed when now Angel Stadium was renovated, so they're going to let a judge decide it. There have been musings that if Moreno is forced to change the name back to Anaheim Angels, he'll either move the team or slash the payroll, or both.
Personally, I think he's being a real idiot about it all. The team was in the top 5 in attendance last year & that had zero to do with the addition of LA to the name. If he does what people think he'll do if forced to change back to Anaheim Angels, he'll be a candidate for Moron of the Year in 2006.

Has anyone seen Johnny Damon's new haircut? I think when Damon comes back to Boston, he'll get constantly called a traitor.
brerbear8
01-20-2006, 12:12 AM
We no longer speak of that person. He is a traitor. His haircut makes him look terrible and he, along with the rest of that no good team of overpayed jerks are going nowhere for the next 85 years. The curse was REVERSED- not broken. This means that the Bambino has once again donned a Boston uniform and the yankees have 85 more ringless years.

The Padres signed veteran catcher Mike Piazza to a one year contract. Does Mike still have what it takes left in him? We'll see this year.
Tell_No_Tales
01-30-2006, 06:55 PM
Piazza is not going to farewell in San Diego. 1) Hitters Park 2) Old age for catcher, will play maybe 70-80% if healthy. 3) Bad knees. He needs to become a DH and just bat because he can still hit.

Not if he'd only going to further tarnish his career. He's already pretty much thrown a ticket to the Hall of Fame in the toilet, why keep looking like a washed up has-been? The Nationals need to get players that will help them grow the organization, not players who'll use the organization to raise their career from near-death.

i couldnt disagree more. you must remember that greqat things can and have happened in similar situations. may I remind you that the biggest baseball legend of all time, Babe Ruth, was considered a washed up has been when he called his shot and sent one over the green monster. sosa is a good ball player. if he is willing to do what it takes, he can be back to all star status. others have done it before.

Well I never said Sammy was incapable of hitting a big blast. The point I was making was that Washington should focus more on long-term moves & not potentially damage their season by waiting through a .230avg for the one or two memorable home runs he might hit.
