View Full Version : Star Tours, Rumors on new destinations?

Im wondering, is there any rumors anyone heard about Star Tours having new destinations, I was told there was, once Lucas finished ep 3, any thoughts or ideas to bring light to the subject?

Jim Hill said something about revamping the entire ride which also means no more REX when it would come back. However, I seriously doubt that.

Jim Hill has been wrong before, but I would hope that REX goes away... he good when your a kid but he's just annoying.

So, no rumors on the new destinations, like the Naboo express and whatnot, hmmm i never found REX annoying before, but thats just me. I know its just a rumor, but i wonder how they would make the ride work without a pilot or probably get a less "annoying" robot, hmmmm?
Wendy Darling

I think that they should do your second idea...that robot really annoys me sometimes, although other times it isn't as annoying, but still...

Rex isn't that bad. I love the little guy. Love quoting him too. It wouldn't be Star Tours without his faulty memory.

^ Let's not forget that Rex made it into Remember...Dreams Come True.
There have been plenty of rumors what the *next* Star Tours ride will be, but they've all only been purely speculative rumor. What we do know is Lucas vowed never again to work with Eisner. Even though Iger's in there now, Lucas isn't going to become all buddy-buddy again with Disney all that quickly. If anything new is coming to Star Tours, it probably won't be there until 2009 at the earliest.

Someone on theforce.net said this:
My family and I visited Disneyland (Anaheim, California) and had a talk with [Star Tours employee]. Star Tours was still fun but it has not changed in years (if at all). I asked [the employee] if the attraction was ever going to be revamped to tie into The Phantom Menace episode. [He] said that Disneyland's operating budget has gone mostly into building the new Explore California themepark, which opens summer 2001 and the new and improved Autopia which opens summer 2000. [He] speculated that Star Tours would not get updated until George Lucas was completely done with the first trilogy and subsequent DVD saga in 2005.
An unnamed source told them:
The updated new ride film for Star Tours, based on TPM of course, was supposed to be a big Summer project for ILM. John Knoll and his team were all set and ready to work on it. The problems have all been on the Disney side of things. And Disney may have delayed so long that even if they got their ducks in a row right now John and his group may be otherwise occupied. Thanks to Disney it may be quite a bit before anyone enjoys a new version of Star Tours. The original plan was for work to begin on the new Star Tours almost immediately after TPM was finished. The new Star Tours (whenever it comes together) is planned to be a 3D ride film requiring Disney Park guests to wear 3D glasses. That means twice the rendering time for ILM because both left and right eye images need to be created. This is one of the reasons why delays on Disney's part have caused problems for ILM.
But a CM working at Star Tours in Disneyland countered:
i was wondering where you got you source on Star Tours having a new movie as of May 20...becasue i work at the attraction and can tell you that i have spoken with trainers, show assessors, supervisors, maintanence, WDI, engineering, and my co-work spoke with Lucas himself on his last visit this past July. I can assure you that Star Tours will NOT be getting a new film to coincide with the release of TPM. It will be at least a year before Star Tours will renevate. When it does, it will get a new system featureing a 3-D type film, which will require Star tours to close down for a number of weeks to re-do the attraction.
CMs were right again!

^ That all sounds like it happened in 1999 sometime. It's really old news that the pod-racer movie wasn't coming into Star Tours, although that was the strongest rumor at the time. I'm not sure if you're trying to show that CMs are good sources for DLR news or what here. Front line CMs are generally the single worst people to get scoops from.

I think a 3D film would be awesome for star tours, however I have a few hopes. Star Tours suffers some problems with it's old film projections such as getting out of synch witht the movement of the simulator this could be solved with digital projection. However, digital projection lacks the depth that film has. For this reason, 3D seams ideal, with 3D digital could be used and you would have awesome depth, which brings me to my next point. I LOVE 3D, infact so much that I have a quite pricey 3D theater system in my home (no cheap red/ble glasses here). BUT real life is nothing like a 3D film where things pop out @ u and such. I think if star tours uses 3D it should simply be to create depth, the only situation I would have things pop out for is if something broke through the "windshield" and flew into the starspeeder, but even that may be tacky. WHat does everyone else think?
Legend_S
06-30-2005, 01:42 PM
That be awsome, but i wonder how they'll use the glasses, i mean like they did with Honey i shrunk, to protect you from flying stuff, with Star Tours, hmmmm i think of something in the line of making your trip a "safe" one. Yeah, it would be something i'd like to see imagineers make possible.

To answer PeopleMoverMatt, I know it's from 1999, it's just what TheForce.Net returns when you search for Star Tours.
And about 3D, I think that would be too much. The simulation is intense enough as it is for some people.

Then again, Lucas did note he was gonna do something for Star Tours at Celebration III.

What I would do is have multiple destinations. Though WDW and the other Star Tours would be better due to having 6 cabins, Disneyland should get these as new ride films:
Mustafar; where ghostly lightsaber duelists would be seen fighting on the lava river as you fall into the current. The two spirits would even fight atop the starspeeder deck.
Endor;remade version of the original with the Death Star II replacing the old Death Star
Tatooine; encounter podracers, the sarlacc, Bantha herds and a massive Krayt Dragon
Naboo; travel through the planet core to Theed.

3D wouldn't do alot with the current film. You'd have to add cheesey 3D tricks.
rytheguy
07-02-2005, 12:06 PM
That is exactly what I don't want!! I think that'd be horrible. I think just a sense of depth is all they should do if they add 3D.

Jerry Reese has been a director for many disney projects the latest was the 50 anniversary movie on main street. He knows Lucas very well and has confirmed that in the future Lucas is looking to revamp the ride with a pod racer movie. No time frame on when the project is going to take place but it is going to happen

I think the new Star Tours will and should be very much like the one they have now, but maybe change the destination and add in some elements from Episodes I, II, & III.

Old rumor that died many moons ago.
What I don't understand is why people want a ride from Ep's 1-3 when everyone was saying how inferior they were to Ep's 4-6. IMO this ride shouldn't be touched at all if these vague rumors are the best that's been come up with so far.

I like Star Tours just the way it is. All they really need to do is make the video look more fresh. It looks really old and out of date. Still a great ride though!

I think disney should add a new digital video with new ehancements, like fix those X-Wing S-foils lightspeed errors.
Also that, when i entered the Starspeeder 3000 simtaltor, I see some minor damage on the ship, like a broken nail, a tore open ***** near the doors. They should fix it.
Just ask yourself this. Would you rather have REX pilot the ride or Jar Jar. I thought so!

Captain Rex droid pilot! What is George Lucas thinking?! Nobody likes Jar Jar binks, he is so annoying and it was consider a dissapointment by all starwars fans and they hate him so much. I think George Lucas likes Jar Jar, they better not put a fully high-tech Jar Jar Binks animatronic, people would get mad that the loveable funny pilot droid would get replaced by a stupid alien. They better not replace Captain Rex.

I agree with those who mention multiple destinations for ST, that would really give a sense of wholeness to the TL spaceport (and the star wars universe offers many choices of planets to "visit").... 3D could be nice, but I'd still prefer the cinematic quality of the original star wars films (maybe just updating the projection system), but keeping that feeling that you are really traveling around the stars and not just becoming part of a high tech videogame full of CGI....
Let's hope that something comes for Star Tours in the next years, it really needs improvement to get even with Space Mountain 2.0 and become again that powerful 1-2 Tomorrowland "combo" of the 80's and early 90's...

Yeah, I really cant wait till they do something more with it, theres so much stuff to do with it, with the Hoth Express, Naboo Express, or Yavin Express others that I cant think of because im too lazy to look up the other planets names lol

they should remake the film with the new technology that ILM has developed throughout the years, why change it? it is a timeless ride like pirates, haunted mansion or indy, yes, i know it really needs a physical upgrade, but the ride itself speaks for a legend in tomorrowland history...dont ya think? or would you prefer the subs or ppm story to repeat with star tours?

Just update the quene area, the droids, all the Starspeeders and Captain Rex. Make the sound THX and make the projection digital, so it would look super clear and brand new. Thats it.

Man replacing REX would suck! I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I wasn't a big fan of Jar-Jar Binks, or the whole Digital C-3PO thing, this a using slapsticky Jerry Lewis alien was just bad writing. Sure the kids laugh but to anyone over 7 it's cute but it gets old really quick. the OG trilogy is funny but its the delivery of the Main characters that made it funny. Also, I love the OG C-3PO and R2-D2(it was nice to have a real C-3PO in the last flick). Basically what I'm trying to say is do you wan't a dumb, loud, alien Flying your ship? One who ya can't even understand? Or, Do ya want a droid who after a few minuets you forget that hes not real do to the fact that he has human like emotions that make you feel like your in it Deep when your caught in that tractor beam?
Wow, the fanboy in me is all worked up over something that most likely won't happen, *sigh* man I'm a dork... and proud of it!

^ And people thought that same thing years ago when it was first noticed. That's how the pod-racing rumor really got started. But, as we know now, there was nothing new for Star Tours that came from those rumors. Personally, I wish either that sign would be turned off or something new from it would actually happen. I'm tired of these rumors it keeps generating.

Firstly, it would be stupid to have 3-D because if you go by a huge asteroid its like hey how come the windshield din't break and how is the ship still flying. Second i think they should make a rex 2.0 or somthing, and change how he says its his first flight, ive ridden it many times and its just a big lie.

I think Star Tour is fine with the original "screen within the vehicle" format. All they really need to update the ride is a different movie and different lines for Rex. Oh yeah, and maybe an updated and cooler looking Star Speeder!

That would be like Soarin' Through Space. That wouldnt be fun because spaces is a big ball of nothingness. And concitering the fact that there isnt gravity in space, so you couldnt soar. Now if your talking about doing it like Back to the Future. Thats one possability. And much more expecive than anything they ever imagined. Plus they have no where near enough room. So lets just keep it the way it is. Re edit it. Ive seen the video so many times i know where they cut out scenes. Like the death star trench looks endless, then all the sudden a wall just pops in and your at the "end". Its horrably edited.

"Then we went on Star Tours (http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneyland/en_US/parks/attractions/detail?name=StarToursAttractionPage) while Gilbert watched Benjamin again. I asked an attendant if they'd ever gotten around to naming that moon of Endor. He chuckled, and informed me no, but that they were planning a new movie for the ride in 2007, the 20th anniversary of the attraction. He said that they're planning to attach some pods to the speeder and go for a podrace like in Episode I. We shall see."

No, no, Back to the Future comes nowhere close to Star Tours.
Don't believe me? Ride BTTF and look left, above, or to the right and see all of the the staging, lighting, other vehicles, etc. If you're not in the center unit, the picture is a little off. Even then, it's hard to divorce your mind from seeing it as a glorified movie screen (an effect that oddly works better in an enclosed simulator like Star Tours).

Anyway I was on star tours on monday and it was at 11:30 at night so it was basicly a walk on. I mean even the doors on the star speeder were open when we got to them so we just walked in.
I was ready for another star tours experiance. Little did i know it would be my worst. let me paint this out to you. Okay We walked to the 3rd row and there were litterally 11 people on the ride with us so it was pretty cool. Right the door guy who does the seat belt thing was bein all weird and wasnt talking so we were like whatever. Then he closes his little box and then shuts the door and locks it and were sitting there waiting for the ride to start. Then a lady on a microphone was like you guys look dead you should wake up. and then behind me sombody said just start the ride. then we all laughed and then it started.
Now rex was actually working fully fuctionally but the rest of the ride wasnt. As soon as u did the first drop from the maintanance bay. the little seat belt box with the lights flew open and was slamming all around and i was like awww cause i love star tours. Then when u hit the asteroid (when u are going in it) all of the edit cuts were like totally crappy and extremely noticeable from that point on. Like u were entering it and then the screen turned black and then u were in it. then when you were entering the trench the camera jumped about 30 feet forward instantly. now at this time the side doors were rattling like crazy and is really distractiong but eh. then u were in the trench and it looked endless then all the sudden the end wall is just there. I know where every edit cut in the film is and thats not right.
The edit cuts are dated. No he film is dated. No the ride is dated. Now like I said I love Star Tours but I think they should start looking at the rails. :icon_idea
Now this is off topic but I have a theory that Disney knows when to take a ride out when all of the paint on the rails is scratched off. Now for Star Tours case its the exit rail. :icon_excl
