Ok I was in discussion with an upper management at DL and we spoke on the sub lagon and its fate, the rummor has it that WED is not sure what to make of it yet and this was on friday of June. The lagon was to become a a finding nemo ride / Captian Nemo and now Unsure what to do with the subs. The only thing they where sure on was that the subs had to come back.. so what are your thoughts?
I think it would be kind of neat if they brought the old subs back, but added a section that features Nemo.

So as I was asking before the board was updated, I was wondering if anyone knew what powered the subs on their little underwater track? Was there a motor on a little tire, or was it propelled by a turbine, and the track was just there to guide it? Thanks, Stephen

the subs are deisel motors... propellor driven i think, but i could be wrong on that.

Judging from recent photos of holes being cut into the rockwork, I'm assuming new animatronic fish/Nemo characters will be in the lagoon in addition to the ones going in the show building itself.

I hope so. it'll make the currently dismal looking lagoon so much nicer to the eye for all of us that still look at it behind those walls. lol

eh... disney wants you to look behind those walls... to keep all of us on the fan boards salivating over this new attraction.... thats why they didnt wall-in the monorail track.

Are you talking about the part of the monorail that goes over the lagoon in a right turn? It'd be fairly impossible to wall that in & prevent view from the monorail trains.

I think it would be great if they had a themed Finding Nemo sub ride. I was alway's a big fan of the Pixar movies (Finding Nemo is the best), and I hope they do that!

The old Submarine Voyage was good and is one of the classics. I miss that old ride, underwater it looks realistic and like a ocean. but the animatronics were not to good. But I wish they will add real crabs and fishes inside. But they cannot because they can't live there.
Let's hope this new Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage will bring back the old memories.

Yes I hope that the new submarine ride will be as fun as the old submarine ride. Granted, the old ride was somewhat dated, but to me it was a great ride, which I have missed for many years. Heres to whatever Disney Imagineers put in that Lagoon!
Stephen

OK, this is just a stupid idea which would defenatly cause some major damage to the lagoon, but why don't they just fill it up and run it as it is? It would be a great "work in progress" ride! :D. lol J/K

I disagree in making it based on Finding Nemo. Not every attraction has to be based on a movie. Rumor has it that it was closed years ago to be given an Atlantis overlay, but because the movie did so poorly at the box office, why make a ride of it? Even when it closed it wasn't based on 20K Leagues.
It seems that WDI has lost touch with a lot of their creativity and rely too heavily on a box office hit to bring in new rides (example: Monster's Inc. dark ride).
They should come up with a great original submarine concept and throw in subtle tributes to Nemo just to keep the little kiddies entertained. Let's not forget that the ride isn't built in Fantasyland, but rather is built in Tomorrowland and thus should be based on the exploration of [liquid] space.
Stephen

Yeah, I don't like it too, but as far as we know, it's supposed to be a scientific voyage to the Australian Current, and the Nemo chars just pop in.
Stephen

How about a 20,000 leagues under the sea attraction? We'd just plaster a "Natilus" body over the current subs and redecorate inside! Add and delete a bunch of scenery (animatronics) and viola! 20,000 Leagues under the Sea!

I have heard the same from disney fire fighters who have said that the lagoon might not even be a finding nemo sub ride. But indeed they are pondering on the thought of finding nemo. Also in times to come they are going to be putting up barricades on the monorail track going through the lagoon area so guests cant track progress.
GreenLantern13

Barricades are pointless. people will find the cracks and get pictures. they might as well just put a tent over the area so no one can see anything(if they wanted to, this is the route they'd probably take).

Frankly, I'm skeptical of both MisterDooDah's and Hockeyman's posts. I will only believe it when I see it, or a reputable source that has at least a decent track record reports it. Even then I will be very, very surprised...
Like that person who swore up and down to us on the old boards that Disney was going to paint brown stripes on the exterior of Space Mountain and was "in the know" because he worked at the park.
Just because you work at the park doesn't make you "in the know", and that the person you talked to on your break is "in the know" (or being truthful) either. Just because the person isn't in costume doesn't make them "upper management". And many, many times castmembers just say any old thing to see what kind of response they will get from you. The more gullible you look, the more outrageous the lie will be. What the heck do Firefighters know about what the imagineers are doing, or planning to do, or have/haven't been approved to do at the park? It's just as likely the guy pushing a broom and wiping up child vomit off the dock in Frontierland will know something.
There's just no way to put up barricades along the monorail tracks. What are they supposed to attach it to? The cost would be prohibitive. It would be like putting up barricades as high as the AstroOrbitor when Buzz was being built. Many "spy shots" of the facade of the building were taken from that ride (I know, I was the first to think of it and Al Lutz posted the shots on MiceAge) The sub lagoon is about 1/4 of the show. They're really not that concerned about us seeing what they're doing.

i agree. one idea....they could pretty easily just like....have a series of "L" shaped bars coming out from underneath the track where the monrail dosent touch and have them holding up tarp type material or boards or whatever and that could theoretically work....
maybe i will draw a picture later and post it but tell me if you understand what im saying first....

We also know that the Nemo project was approved by TDA or whoever approves those things. Nemo also hasn't been officialy announced yet, so I'm not all that surprised that a Disney "upper managment" worded that the way he did. Judging by the past, Nemo's coming, you can bet on it
A thought, perhaps we should make it a requirement to have a source when posting a "new" rumor sort of like citing a source in a research paper? Certainly would make you a more refutable source, and would clean out all those half-brained I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THEY'RE ADDING A LOOP TO SPACE MOUNTAIN!!! rumors. :icon_roll

some of the officials in the disney fire department also told me that disney is not sure what kind of ride they are going to make out of the lagoon area. When they had the subs in the dry dock area they where just testing to see if the subs where still going to hold water. One sub actually failed the test. The seawolf was actually leaking water after many years of not being serviced. Also I have been told they are going to be putting up barricades along the monorail track to prevent guests from seeing the progress being made in the lagoon. this is just what i have been told from people in the inside.

The seawolf was actually leaking water after many years of not being serviced. Also I have been told they are going to be putting up barricades along the monorail track to prevent guests from seeing the progress being made in the lagoon. this is just what i have been told from people in the inside.Disney already knew going into this refurb that ALL of the subs were leaking water to some degree. That's been reported on before. One of the reasons they closed the ride was that the subs were beginning to leak water back when they closed the ride in the late 90's, and they (Pressler) didn't want to spend the money to fix the problem. So the subs certainly weren't going to get any better with just sitting there in the dry docs (and in some cases, just sitting in the water!) for the last 5-7 years. Disney knew going in that the subs were going to have to be extensively repaired if not outright replaced, which was the main reason that the repair bill first came in at $20 million when Matt Ouimet asked to know how much it would cost just to get the things running again just like 1997 (without the Nemo overlay). Once he heard that number, he reportedly asked the imagineers to come up with a number with the ride re-imagineered (figuring correctly that if it cost $20 million dollars to just 'fix' the dang thing, they might as well budget for a completely re-imagined ride).
You've already said that you were told that they are going to put up barricades along the monorail track... and frankly I still don't believe it will happen. I've taken pictures of the sub lagoon from the Matterhorn, from Innoventions and from Space Mountain... There's just no way to shield it enough, so it's not worth the expense.

07-04-2005, 08:44 AM
I agree that it would just be silly to try to barricade all potential viewing spots. It would make much more sense to simply cover the work in the actual lagoon area, using tarps or tents or some such. Frankly, I don't think they'd bother barricading until something goes in that they wouldn't want Joe Public to see...we can't learn much from the construction going on now!
Check this out and use your imagination. Take out the subs and build a new roller coaster type ride there. Of course the coaster cars would resemble the old subs and you would sit ala Matterhorn style. You could either start out of water or under, but it would have to go thru the lagoon and caves. Put a clear tube under the lagoon so the coaster could go thru it. Maybe the coaster would slow down to go thru the lagoon so the riders could view whatever was put under the water. Its just a thought. I would like to see a Black Hole or TRON ride myself.

If, they brought them back, I would ride them, instead of gazing over the emptiness of liquid space.

Because of the style of ride it is, and because the load/unload time is long, they really have to make it a good ride with a good story behind it. If it fails to be a good ride, that would be a huge waste of money and even more money to change it again. It is no PPM/Rocket Rods to nothing kinda change. Even though it is having a Pixar theme, which I am tired of them making rides off of movies, I do have faith they will make something worthwhile to want to go back and ride again. Only because of the scale of the project.

I just thought... If Spongebob (you've herd of him, right?!) was owned by Disney, instead of Paremount, the Sub ride could be a Spongebob ride, and to keep the theme of Tomorrowland, it would start out to be a scientific voyage with Jacques Cousteau and you end up in BikiniBottom, the city Spongebob lives in, and stuff like that. What do you think about the underwater CGI projection systems they plan on using in th enew attraction? I think it's kind of kool, it will almost be as if the real characters are in the lagoon with you since the originals were computer animated. I am hesitant about it though. Hopefully they know what their doing as much as we think they do.

Instead of Finding Nemo, i rather suggest them to make the old Submarine Voyage back with new subs, but each of them is painted yellow and gray. New effects, animatronic fishes or real fishes. Some realistic moving crabs and lobsters. Inside the show building will have remodeled and repainted ruins of atlantis and scary looking giant sea serpent.
Finding Nemo was made by pixar and it doesn't do anything with Tomorromland and future stuff.
o well, it is already made into production and coming back to Tomorromland. Let's hope this new submarine voyage will bring back our old memories.

Yup... now it's more like "jules-vern land". I think the Astro orbiter looks cool, but more of like a statue, not like a ride. The rocket jets should go up on the top of the ppm station, and the astro orbiter should keep spinning its planets in the front of tomorrowland, but I do think I could stand the big rocks being blown up. :D that would be awesome!

I think that the old subs are not going to make an appearance because they have been sitting in the cave for seven straight years without maintenence. They would probably cost A LOT to repair and it would probably be cheaper to manufacture new subs.I think it would be kind of neat if they brought the old subs back, but added a section that features Nemo.

I recall them having some sorta air system in there, there was like these vents right at the bottom of the windows that blowed air, it was cold air, so yeah, I would think it would have AC.

i think they used to have trout fishing in the rivers of america. but yeah, a bass pond and trout in the river would be cool haha.
Fishing use to be allowed when DISNEYLAND first opened on Tom Sawer Island, but the guests got tired of carring their prize catch around... so, the dead smelly fish would be scattered all over the park. PEUW!! so, Walt stopped the fishing. So, if I were you, I would'nt get my hopes up.

So as I was asking before the board was updated, I was wondering if anyone knew what powered the subs on their little underwater track? Was there a motor on a little tire, or was it propelled by a turbine, and the track was just there to guide it? Thanks, Stephen
I am 208% sure that the subs were not powered by the track. I have been on either a old sub that was taken out and sold or an exact replica of the ones Disney made around multiple coves on Santa Catalina Island, which is right off the coast from Long Beach.
The sub was also called the Nautilus, and it is now used as tours to see the wildlife in the Pacific Ocean near Avalon and Catalina. All the decorations are exactly the same and so on.

There are tracks, check the pictures from Daddyb's updates. You can see clearly the tracks that are now being worked on/replaced. Every water ride has tracks of some form, even Splash Mountain, the Mark Twain & Columbia. The only ones that I know of that don't are any water park tobaggen rides (they technically do if you count what you're sliding down) & the DLR Canoes.

This is a DISNEYLAND board, not WDW... we're talking about the Nuclear Submarines in tomorrowland... those were not sold... they're still intact. But there was one called the Nautilus, because it was supposed to be a ride based on the first nuclear submarine which was called the Nautilus.

Well, I know this is a late response but this is how the subs were powered as I am Disneyland retired Navy (aka Subdriver). The subs were powered by diesel engine and belive me it was tough if you got the rear hatch duty standing by the exaust. An actual propeller made the subs move and the track was just a guide, The only way to stop was throw the sub in reverse, so it made keeping up with the spiel a real challenge as the sub captain only had a joy stick with forward and reverse.
People always ask me what it looked like in the caverns. Ugly and kinda spooky. The subs had just a few inches of clearance it was very low. The caverns looked like a parking garage that was flooded. Huge concrete supports going into the water concrete ceiling and lots of waterwith multil colored lights all aimed at the water.
The track followed the same shape as the lagoon track like a figure eight that almost crosses in the center but not quite (that narrow part was the enterance into the caverns.
Okay last thing, each sub had two horizontal wheels sticking off the bottom of the sub one in back and one in front. The track was like a U and the wheels bobbed between the two sides, so the sub could go up and down and slight side to side giving the feeling of floating because you actually were.
The end!

Thanks for the great insight. I was thinking that I have never seen any good photos of the sub cavern under construction. I have seen may photos of the lagoon being built, but, not the cavern. O.K.,:This is my first official post!! And here's some info:Finding Nemo Subs will have most of the same props of the originanal ride but will be tied in with Nemo,so many people will have their "old subs". An example is at the beginning,Nemo will say something like "Dad,are there such things as sea serpents?" and marlin will say "of course not,Nemo!" and things like that.Bruce is at the shark part, the angler fish in the abyss seen, and the tank gang at Atlantis(yeah,it's a stretch, but the tank gang wanted a similar home to the Atlantis themed-fish tank and the volcano of bubbles).Oh, and at the end they will have a "we found Nemo" party with all of the characters of the movie celebrating. It will be themed probably in tommoroland because the plot line will feature you looking for an volcano and you happen to run into the characters. Any questions?

Yes, your source if you would. Also you mention the sea serpent at the beginning, while in the original Submarine Voyage, sea serpent was toward the end. Where's the giant squid & polar ice cap in this? If it's going to use many of the old props, why have we seen just about all of them removed?

It's taking so long because they're really building an entirely new attraction from the ground up. You can't just wave a magic wand over muiltiple years of inactivity and the subs sitting underwater. Also remember the Subs weren't exactly in the best of shape when they were finally closed for good. This isn't a simple overlay, this is the imagineering of a wholly new experience.

Well if they ARE using the old subs (which is very possible if you look at concept sketches of the subs, which look exactly like the old ones), they should at least UPGRADE them! They could put more comfortable seats, more space, bigger windows, and put cool new technical stuff in them!

Um...okay...I can barely understand what you just said. But I think I get it...
But still, ya, an upgrade would be good! Obviously, you don't want a COSMETIC upgrade, and I'm moderately okay with that because they look fine as they are. But what they NEED is a TECHNICAL upgrade so that they can run better, have cool new built-in effects, and have more capacity to fix the reason they were closed down in the first place (if you haven't figured it out by now, it's capacity:icon_roll ).

ya I read you however I don't see how they could make any more compacity without siverly modifying the subs also I would like to see them left with desil as a fuel source and not CNG when they tested CNG back before the ride closed the sub that had CNG was the least reliable in the fleet also the most important thig DO NOT CHANGE THE NAMES OF THE SUBS!!!

Last year they were testing new ride elements to see if they looked good. The new show pieces were contained in plexiglass boxes. This system of contained show scenes is going to be great because they can be created offsite and switched out on the fly. The show can be changed and improved often without lenghty rehabs.

They tested to see of you could tell that the plexiglass was there from inside the subs, and the suits who checked it out said that they couldn't so the whole project got the go-ahead. Thats why the testing was done before draining the lagoon. I saw a pic of one of the plexiglass boxes being lowered into the lagoon. I think it was on Mouse Planet... couldn't see anything but the top edge of the box though. :(

From what I understand there will be sheets or boxes made of plexiglass submerged into the water. Using a new underwater DLP(Digital Light Processing) projection system they will project the characters onto the plexiglass like a movie screen. Since the plexiglass is clear, and under water, which is also clear, the theory is that the plexiglass would be invisible and you owuld just see the projections.

I think that's why they are using boxes rather than just sheets of plexiglass. The projectors will probably be housed in the box, which is full of air, not water.

from what I'v herd from several sorces and a monorail CM they are infact going to reuse the the subs because if they built new ones they would have to be built to new regulations set after the old subs were built but if they reuse the old ones they would not have to worry about it because the subs were built before the new regulations were set.

I'm not sure if this issue has been addressed yet, but what are the CMs going to do about guests in wheelchairs? It's kind of obvious that they wont be able to add an elevator or lift to the submarines for them, so are they going to construct an oversized sub for wheelchair bound guests or what?

The current plan is to have an interactive booth (not on a sub) where the person can experience the attraction. (probably a video of some kind, with some interactive elements). There is just no way to accomodate a wheelchair on the attraction.

I think they probably either made molds or made Concrete stamps from the old props and are re-creating them. If you look closely in some of the updates you can see some blocks made of re-bar and they are scattered around the track. i'm guessing they will get the same look so it would look like a ruin throughout the outside part of the track

I talked to my friend who works at disneyland the old subs will not come back as far as he knows due to that the old ones when people climbed up the ladder they would slip n fall because the ladder was wet. Also when building a new ride laws require that every ride be handicap accesibale (thats why in california adventure the lines are wider so handicap people can get through). Actually no offence but that is actually that is not all right. It is law that when the make a new ride vehicle that it needs to be handicap accessable. These subs were made in the 50s and that law wasn't around then so that means that Disney does not have to make it handicap accessable

They really have done some major changes to the lagoon. They had already layed a foundation for a show building that the track will go through to the tunnel. It still looked fresh and wet. The dock was completely gutted and is getting redone. Very interesting to look at. Although I wonder how it will look after all the changes.

The Problem is is that they need to wait a week or two before they can start again on the showbuilding because they need the concrete to set. My guess is they are going to work on the rockwork, the dock or just go back into the caverns

Because it is behind the scenes magic. Do magicians want you to see how they are doing their tricks? same concept. That and industrial spies. Maybe not that, but they are out there. It just sounded good. Industrial spies. Ooohhhhh!!!! Disney never wants you to see what is going on. They obviously can't stop people from looking into the lagoon cause of the Monorail and the station or the Train and Autopia. But they can stop you from getting into the tunnels or show buildings.
