I'm surprised that this has yet to be posted.

SSE's opening date has been pushed back through February 18, 2008.

Some refurb they must be doing if it is 3 months behind.

Now, my theory is that the ride system has to be replaced for various reasons.
Also, it has been mentioned that the SSE ride will open sometime before said date. However, the entire SSE attraction will open on 2/19/08.
Of course, this is just preliminary speculation as more news is expected to be released this weekend.

The closure dates are in the trip planning forum under Spaceship Earth closure dates (http://www.visionsfantastic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14848)

I don't know. I saw this on WDW Magic, but they didn't know anything. And of course the Walt Disney World website doesn't say.

Hopefully its just a case of going bigger and better than previous buildup. Maybe the turnout for the 25th ceremony made they decide to go grander with their plans?? Or unfortunately they didnt grasp the full scope of the work involved in what they were planning to do..Im hoping for the first

There is speculation that the ride system must be replaced. I will keep an eye on any SSE permits filed.

Also, it has been said that there was no way WDI would complete the refurb by November. January, maybe. February-March, certainly.

If any of you remember how long Test Track kept getting pushed back...They had a lot of problems with the computer systems for each of the cars

It was put on hold for about 1 year. As you said, the ride control software from an outside company (don't recall it's name at the moment) was full of bugs. Due mainly to the fact that this software had never been used before. WDI then opted to write their own software.

^Yep, I was a CM at the time and we kept hoping that they would announce Cast Preview for it, but it kept getting delayed...

I've heard, out of pure speculation, that a show scene that was supposed to remain intact was removed. I believe that's a bit far-fetched, but rather WDI is spending more time to really plus the attraction and knock our socks off. I was pretty shocked when they announced this, for I was really looking forward to reading about it when it was scheduled to reopen next week, as it's the closest thing I'll get to having Horizons back, if rumors prove to be true.
