Welcome to the second ?Imagineering Training Class?. This class is going to be very informative. Today we are going to talk about land and area layouts, discussing how to properly layout a land and area of a park. This will help you understand how to take a land or area of the park or newly chosen ride location, and develop it to best fit what?s going in there.

Here are a few things you might need to know for this class.

[B]Aerial View or Plot View is a view looking straight down on the area from the air. These are used to show the layout of buildings, rides, or in the case of entertainment, the set design and lighting.

Landscape Architectureis the discipline that focuses on our plant palette and area development. This includes the layout of all of our hardscape and the arrangement of the foliage elements on and between attractions. This is a major part of themeing a land or new area, or ride location. Landscaping shows what the area is to be, For instance, Landscape Architecture for Tomorrowland shows a mars like atmosphere using odd looking plants and lots of greenery. While the bright floral color palette for Toontown shows a cartoony atmosphere.

Architecture is responsible for turning those fanciful show drawings into real buildings, meeting all of the functional requirements that are expected of them. Our parks present some unique architectural challenges.

Lighting Design puts all the hard work the rest of us have done into the best light. Lighting Designers are also responsible for specifying all of the themed lighting fixtures found in the parks. As our Lighting Designers are fond of telling us, ?without lights, its radio!?

Graphic Designers produce signage, both flat and dimensional, in addition to providing lots of the artwork, patterns, and details that finish the Disney show. Marquees and directional signs are just a couple of examples of their work.

Prop Design is concerned with who ?lives? in a given area of a park. All of the pieces and parts of everyday life that tell you about a person or a location are very carefully selected and placed. These props have to be found, purchased, prepped, built and installed.

Sound Designers work to develop the auditory backdrop for everything you see and experience. Sound is one of the most evocative senses. The songs in the attractions, the background music in the lands, and the sound effects built into show elements all work together to complete our illusions.

Character Paint creates the reproductions of various materials, finishes, and states of aging whenever we need to make something new look old.

Character Plaster produces the hard finishes in the Park that mimic other materials. This includes rockwork, themed paving, and architectural facades such as faux stone and plaster. They even use concrete to imitate wood!

When laying out a new area of the park, ride location, or land, think first of what you need to put in that area (rides, restaurants, shops, various other buildings, backstage and service areas, etc). From there you look at the buildings that are going in that area, and try to find the best layout that will keep the theme of the land, while maintaining guest flow and ease of access. For instance, things like parade routes, extra space for queue expansion, and show related guest control things, need to be thought of. Like for parades, the land or area that you are designing may have a parade route going through it. If it does you will have to make other means of guest flow in order to get guests around the parade. Queue expansion needs to be done in means of expanding the queue while still keeping guests walkways open and big enough for through traffic.

You also have to think of all the things needed to create the land and make it function, lighting fixtures, BGM music (background music), trash receptacles, restrooms, etc. If you are developing an area for a ride, you have to design in areas for vehicle storage, mechanical areas, service areas, and backstage access to a main backstage road.

Your assignment this class is to create a new area for AK, using only open space within the park, it can be a ride (which you don?t have to go into great detail on), a new land, or new area of an existing land. There are only a few things that I ask you to do:

? Be sure to include a hand drawn Aerial View drawing of your area with landscaping, and backstage areas included.

? You cannot remove anything that already exists in the park. You can only use free space.

? Be sure to label everything.

? Also show where the new land or area connects to the existing park.

The assignment is due by the next class on Thurs, Sept 13, 2007, at 7pm EST/ 4pm PST

Ok so no one has any questions on the assignment? Really thats odd.

Well i though of something about the labeling.

When you add backstage areas, make sure you include labels for the backstage warehouses or buildings you add. For like a show building label it as that. You get what i mean. Make sure everything has a label or at least give a key of what everything is if you use certain symbols.

Heres another example. IF you use trees in the area, be sure to use the same symbol for the other trees, and put it in the key. If i don't recognize it as a tree i'm going to be like "and this is?".

I've been there, too. But while I can draw, I'd think to put the hand-drawn bird's-eye view of the new land would require the use of some electronics. My digital camera doesn't do a very good job putting pictures up properly; it's always too blurry. And I don't have access to a scanner. What should I do?

We decided that we would expand the areas of where Camp Minnie Mickey is located to the location of where Festival of the Lion King area is also located. S means that it is a Stationary sculpture or a cutout of a character and the A's mean Audio Animatronics with interaction the S's are for the cutting of the budget when the ride is being built. I guess we the first team to be on a late deadline. errrrggg again. But for the BGM in the area the music shall be playing instrumental versions from the Lion King movies from 1,1.5 and 2.

The darkride will be called "The Lion King Adventure" and the quene (sorry if that's wrong) will feature an animatronic Timon and Pumba, entertaining waiting guests and also being a barker for the attraction. The Loading area will have a African landscape background with Rafiki doing a boarding spiel. The vehicle will be a shaped like a wide wildabeast seating 2 people per row and 3 rows. The ride will begin by going through double doors with vines all over them, entering to see the sunrise and every animal bowing down to rafiki holding Simba "The Circle of Life will be playing in the background. You pass under the rock coming upon a lush jungle seeing Timon and Pumba. Taking a right, you see the Simba, Timon and Pumba on the log walking across. "Hakunha Mattatha" will be playing. You then pass more bushes and go through a waterfall. The effect will be similar to davy jones in POTC. You then pass through the elephant graveyard, passing through two big tusks into the heyenas marching. It will be like the marching cards in Alice in Wonderland "Be Prepared" will be heard. You then come into a canyon, with stampeeding wildabeasts on both sides, jumping up and down. You see Simba cry out to his father dropping, Scar is laughing. You turn around to see pride rock under scar's command, a gray cloudy sky You pass flames and see Scar fall to his doom and Simba heroic as ever. You turn around again to see Simba rising up pride rock, everyone bowing. Then you see Simba and Nala. You see them together happy. "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" plays. You finally pull into the station, exiting into a restraunt with Lion King characters entertaining. THE END!!!!

For a new land in the park, i found it fitting to add a themed land after India, on the other side of EE and asia. The reason being, is because in all reality, thats what's splitting the two countries apart. So here we go!

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b94/disneygeek59/DSC00351.jpg

if you look to the right, there's the newly expanded land, India, complete with a new, dark ride attraction for kids who are unable to ride the new E-ticket attractio, Expedition Everest. It is called Under Everest, designed by, SPCMT. If you look in the middle bottom you can see attraction.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b94/disneygeek59/DSC00348.jpg

in this photo you can better see the attraction and backstage area. Besides the new attraction in India, a self-serve, sit-down indian restaurant is there along with giftshops. The giftshops will be like those at any tourist destination, with merchandise like, "I conquered everest..." etc.

Under Everest: Darkride. By SPCMT.

The facade is like a cave with snow on it, it looks like the cave leads to the base of EE, even though it doesn't, it gives the illusion of it being that way though.

The dark ride will be similar to The Many Adventures of Winne the Pooh. It will use the same sort of vehicle and include a couple of sudden stops but other than that should be very kid-friendly. So basically the story is the same as EE, but the part that is different is that this is for a group of explorers who missed the train and are still trying to get to the base of Everest. So it starts off pretty slow and then suddenly everything goes wrong when a blizzard hits and the cart starts to rock. You hear weird noises coiming from different sides of you and you suddenly see huge red eyes staring directly at you...you swerve left and from there you continue on, still rocking, through rocks and rocks and snow and more rocks. This continues with some gags until the Yeti comes for an attack at you and you swerve right. Then comes the finale. Which is just like IJA. The Yeti is right above you and it looks like it is moving towards you and you start to "back up" until you dive right under it. Then you come back to "base camp" (entrance) and continue your fun-filled day at Animal Kingdom

Well done. Did everything i asked, and fit perfectly into the area. And i liked how you incorporated EE into the area. Now i see that you included a backstage area, but i didnt see where it connected to backstage. Im sure if more time was given this project could have flown through the roof. Great Job

Ok, so I'm not trying to make up excuses, but I have a few things to get out of the way before I turn anything in. 1.) I was pretty much on my own for this project. Only one of my team mates every messaged me, but hasn't responded since. 2.) I cant upload my pictures cuz I have a very bad internet connection (dialup... boooo...). 3.) I have never seen the AK. I would use google earth to get a view of it, but for some reason my computer wont load it (again, dialup... boooo...). With that being said, I hope you enjoy Team (Insert Name Here)'s project.

Well, though there will be a lack in pictures, I will try to explain things to the greatest of my ability. So, thanks to Disneylover4ever (I think that was his/her name...), I got a basic feel for the park (but still no idea what it looks like :frown:).

I believe that the park would be more fit with an Egyptian themed land. The setting would be in the most famous city in Egypt, Cairo. The entrance would place you into an Egyptian Bazaar on the streets of Cairo. Two main streets, both of which end up leading towards the star attraction of the land (more on that later), contain shops selling pharoh hats, toy sarcophagi (dunno how to spell that lol) with pop-out mummies inside, fake gold and jewels, Safari uniforms, and other "rare" curios.

Taking the street on the left will take you to the restaurant, Cleopatra's Cafe. It is a restaurant, much like Redd Rocket's Pizza Port at DLR, set between two large golden statues of Cleopatra herself and inside an uncovered tomb filled with forgotten riches and lit with "torches" (electrical ones, not real ones). On the menu will be "local" Egyptian cuisine, most notably Kushari, which is little more than an Egyptain form of spaghetti.

If you instead take the road on the right, you will be treated by a view of the Great Pyramids of Giza (scaled down to fit in the park). Inside the largest pyramid, and in some areas coming outside of the structure, is a splitting rollercoaster entitled "Revenge of Osiris". According to Egyptian myth, Osiris was the god of the underworld (Anubis, who is more popularly believed to be the god of the underworld, was really a lesser god serving under Osiris). This ride would be themed as an attempt to enter the underworld, but as the tourists are among the land of the living, Osiris becomes angry and tries to attack the riders.

The effect used to pull off the feeling of going deep underground and into the underworld could be easily explained. The entire time you are in Egypt, you are traveling uphill at a steady rate. By the time you are at the entrance of the pyramid, you are about 20 feet above the entrance to the land. Thus, you can safely go down into the depths of the pyramid and enter the ride.

Once in the pyramid structure, the line splits in half to accomidate (cant spell that either) for the splitting factor of the coaster cars. These coaster cars branch off both sides of the track and each, after the track splits in two, go on thier separate (but equal length and time) ways to meet up at the station at about the same time, after a ride of approximately three minutes. Maitinence areas are located on three floors, upon each of which the coaster train may make a stop to allow passengers the ability to exit the ride in case of emergency. Each of these floors have a stairwell (hidden when on-ride) that give access to the lower floors.

Backstage areas in Egypt surround the outside of the land (aside from the entrance). Entrances are located next to the main entrance, in the back of Cleopatra's Cafe, in the lower maitinence area of "Revenge of Osiris", and in the back of select shops on the main roads.

If pictures or video will be ABSOLUTELY required, I can have them online by late tomorrow, counting that I have school and will only have a semi-strong internet connection while visiting a friend's house for a short time. Said videos and/or pictures will only be presented at the request of the teachers and/or trainers.

This has been a Team (Insert Name Here) project.

THINGS THAT I KNOW ARE MISSING:
detail on exact location
pictures
minor attractions
more detail on "Revenge of Osiris"
if anything else is missing, please let me know. Even if I can not fix it in time to be graded, it will help to know what I can improve on next time.

Team (Insert Name Here) will graciously accept a lower grade due to lack of pictures, provided that the teacher(s) decide not to give us added time to publish them.

With what you have gone through, i will let you turn in picture.videos for this project when you can. If you feel you need more team members please feel free to recruit two more.

This land would be located near by Rafiki's Planet Watch and Asia, the path connecting it to Asia would be located somewhere near the Flights of Wonder aviary. It would also mean that the train station for the Planet Watch area would finally serve a different purpose, being as station to the new South American area too.

Right before entering the land, guests would walk over a mock suspention bridge over the Amazon river below. As guests walk to the eneterence the see the trees tower high just like the Amazon Rain Forest, and also see Anacondas swimming below, along with native fish such as piranahs. The enterance sign to South America would be made of intertwined wood with torches at the edge of the sign. Vines would grow along the bottom of the sign, giving the guests a sense of actually being in the wild.

Guests then find themselves in a rustic tropical camp site where the area's shops and restaurants lay. Guests here can treat themselves with exotic Latin American foods from La Cantina or refresh themselves with tropical drinks from the Amazon Point Base Bar. Guests also can shop for various exotic curios and leather goods at the Expedition Base Trading Co., plus find plush character merchandise as well.

There would also be a wide aray of wildlife to explore here as well. Exotic parrots from this area can be seen at the Pajaro Paradiso aviary, seeing birds such as Tucans and Maccaws flying in their natural habitat. Just by walking on a few of the bridges, guests would also be able to see waterlife from the "Amazon" below. Other animals, such as Jaguars, Sloths, and Ant-eaters can be seen in their habitat as well.

There is only one ride that would open with the area, which a boat ride called the Amazon River Expedition. This ride would be a hybrid of an outdoor boat ride and dark ride, having the dark ride portion inside a temple. The ride would start when guests enter one of the boats in the the station at the marketplace district. From here, guests embark on to the waters of the Amazon (had to put those "rivers" in to good use). From here, guests pass by the local wildlife, until they enter a forbidden temple. From here, an AA priestess curses the passengers, and right before their eyes, turns into a Jaguar and disappears. The boats pass further, and the rightings on the inside canals of the temple start to glow in blue. The temple then starts to shake, the raging spirits haunting the temple fly around the passengers. It then gets dark. The boat careens in darkness until all of a sudden, the red glowing eyes of a Jaguar glow on the wall in front of you. The wall then "collapses" (the wall is really a door that opens up when it gets dark fo 5 seconds) in front of the passengers, and the boat then drops out of the temple. Don't worry, nobody gets that wet. The boat then careens back on the Amazon, and peacefully enters the station.

Umm...sorry if we (mostly I being the lack of communication in our group and certain people going on vacation too much). Plus, sorry for not having any drawings of anything, being that this was a last minute idea. The map will be posted tomorrow.

Ok, Picture time! Sorry I'm just a bit past the time I promised lol. Traffic was bad on the way home :P

Now then... I won't go very much in depth with the descriptions of the pics since I basically went over it all already. I'll just post the pics and what they are.

Picture #1: This pic shows where the new land will be located. Like I said earlier, I can't load up Google Earth, so I'm not completely sure if this location is already taken. I could only go with what the map I used (and others like it) said. The entrance to "Egypt" will be locateed next to "Africa". In real life, Egypt is located in the North-Eastern part of Africa, so this location makes sense.

Picture #2: The entrance to "Egypt" and a view of the pyramids, home of the star attraction: "Revenge of Osiris".
http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee302/darth_boomer/Shot0004.jpg

Picture #3: A closer view of the Pyramids of Giza, home of "Revenge of Osiris". You can see the track where the coaster exits the attraction and banks back in.
http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee302/darth_boomer/Shot0006.jpg

Picture #4: An overhead view of the entire land (Pyramids cut off a bit). The green circle marks the entrance. Blue marks the restrooms, red marks the restaurant "Cleopatra's Cafe", teal marks the entrance to "Revenge of Osiris", and yellow marks entrances to the backstage areas (pyramid backstage entrances not shown).

Now, youll notice in the above picture that there is an empty space in front of and to the right of the main pyramid. At the time of taking the picture, I was considering adding a smaller attraction (a camel ride to a "distant oasis"), but it was since scrapped. The empty space has since remained unused (and reserved for future attractions). For now, it is home to a small oasis serving as a weenie.

I really liked your area. There is only one problem. The area you put it in is the parade entrance into the park and a major backstage area.

ah, see? I had a feeling it was already used for something lol ^_^" my bad!

EDIT: Hmm... maybe we can use that empty oasis area as a new parade entrance and knock out the middle sphinx at the entrance to allow floats to pass through? Although, that *would* block traffic during parade time... :(

ANOTHER EDIT: Oh never mind... the sandy terrain in the area would probably mess up the floats... now that I think of it, this was probably a bad place to put it -_-"

But how do you use them as simple photo shots that don't move? How do you do that?

Do you have Microsoft Publisher. What you do is print screen, copy into word or publisher. In publisher you can create a jpeg, in word you cant.
