Imagineering Training Class

Hi there. I have come up with and idea to help those that are interested in Imagineering.

This works as a training class, and teaches you the processes WDI uses to begin and finalize projects and some techniques they use. There will be examples of Blue Sky, Design Stages, how each Dept. duties come together in the end.

There would be a class held every two weeks. I figure start now and teach you guys what I know, and have found out from WDI sources about Imagineering, before the next season of "So, you want to be an Imagineer?" starts.

As soon as we can get enough signed up, the classes will begin. DPF will not be running next season of So, you want to be an imagineer? Me and Tiki will be taking over. DPF will still be judging. We are going to hold off on next season so we can do this class, hopefully to help you guys for next season.

I think this is a great opportunity for anybody how is aspiring to become an Imagineer later on in life or looking to simply unlock their imagination and to develop ideas fully with each detail being drawn out.
Either way, sign up, you have nothing to lose?it?s just a matter of how far you are willing to go!



Anybody who is looking to join the second season of ?So, you want to be an Imagineer?? should seriously consider signing up. Though it is not required, it is recommended.

he's not claiming to know "techniques" disney uses. He can teach the people who want to learn if he wants. If you dont think hes qualified enough to teach the knowledge he has about WDI, then dont come. He seems to know what he is talking about when critiquing our projects, and im sure anyone involved in the project, including judges will say that. That is why the people who have signed up, signed up. It's not a matter of his qualification or the secrets he may know to WDI, its about some experiences he has as a light technician at WDW and maybe some people he knows, who know some people who are possibly imagineers.

First off, My uncle works for Feature Animation, and worked on Philhar with Tony Baxter. Then I met Joe Warren and Tony Baxter on Pirates Lair on opening day along with other imagineers and Entertainment Heads that were all over the island. I did "Lunch with an Imagineer" and got Chuck Ballew. We talked for 2 hours. I learned some techniques from that lunch. The rest i have studied on various occasions in the parks. For instance do you know the name of the technique used on the character houses in Toontown... no, well its called "Squash and Stretch". Notice how there are now staright lines on the roofs and window casings of the buildings and how everything seems as if its bulging from the buildings.

And whats the style of architecture used at MGM... want to try art deco with a bit of studio added in.

Its not what secrets you know, its what you can learn by looking.

Like whats the step down in size on MS for the forced perspective.... each floor gets smaller by 2 ft.

Im not trying to show you that I know everything about WDI, cause I dont, but i know the steps it takes to create a project. I have read mostly every Disney Imagineering book and books about the art of disney and behind the scenes secrets.

The point of this class to help the people that want to be an Imagineer, and are coming back for next season. It will teach how to start a project, think of everything involved with the project, proper layout. For instance. People always forget that rides arent just things in a building. There are back stories, plots to each ride. Layout is key and I'm not just talking about the track and scenes. There are mechanical rooms, storage facilities, control rooms, vehicle maintenance areas etc etc. Most peoplej ust design the building to fit the RIDE not everything else, when everything else has to be there to make the ride work.

I dont see why i have to explain myself, but i felt i needed to. I have people that will back me up on this. If you dont want to join, dont join. Im not going to sit here and tell everything that I know. That would defeat the purpose of this class.

Good news. We are going to hold off until next friday. I friend of mine who owns and runs WDWnewstoday.com is going to let me announce this class on his podcast on Maybe. We can get more than 12. If tiki would be willing to help teach. My friend also says that this podcast on monday from that site is going to have some huge news and rumors. Say, I wonder which the parks the teams will go to? Will they all be in the same park or will they be in different parks? Like, for instance, one team goes to WDW's Magic Kingdom, while another goes to Tokyo DisneySea? That almost sounds like "The Amazing Race", a reality game show on CBS.

Well sorry, it's just that when you get some one who just sighned up on the forums and imediatly claims that he can teach us the techniques disney uses for imagineering. You kinda have to be a little reluctant to believe it. You said yourself that most of what you "Learned" was through looking at the parks, and I would be very suprised if we didn't all already know most of those techniquesd you talked about, forced perspective, squash and stretch. Sure you got to talk with an imagineer, but I mean what of the nitty gritties is he going to tell a member of the public. Considering they usually keep their techniques under lock and key. And what does working at a animation studio have to do with imagineering a ride. Sure storyboarding and things like that but thats not exactly rocket science now is it.

I'm just saying, okay.

He's not asking you to pay, this isn't some cooperate scam, and he gave you perfectly legit reasons for knowing techniques, what do you think the Imagineering books do? He said he's had conversations with Imagineers, what do you think that does? If you don't want to take the class, you don't have to, were not forcing you to. Personally, I think this is a great idea that will help train people who want to play SYWTBAI in season 2, we might know alot, but trust me, you know know all that he knows

okay. im not going to be rude maul, but if you're going to sit here and complain about someone's knowledge and him teaching it to us, then dont come. we wouldnt have signed on if we thought it was fishy. we signed up because we're interested in imagineering and would like to learn a few things from lighttech's experience. in my opinion you are being a little bit rude, disrespectful as this is uncalled for. if admin has no problem with this, then I dont see why you should. again, out of no disrespect and all honesty. i'm sure i have many who would back me and lighttech up on this. He's my judge, and by the way he critiques, he knows what he's talking about. if you're unhappy with this imagineering class topic, then report it. Well, that's what I'm trying to figure out, too. That's why I'm trying to explain that to Lighttech1 here. I'm ready to go and I hope you and Darth Boomer are, too. I'm just trying to figure out how to do sign-ups here, too. And only Lighttech1 knows the answers.

Im actually going to the parks for 6 of those 10 days. The rest i have to reapply for this coming winter season. Im currently a Seasonal CM and work based on when they need me. But they are in need of techs this coming christmas so they called me down to reapply. I think im also going to audition for the Celebrate the Season stage show as a dancer.

They are every two weeks. The project i give in each class will be due by the next class.

This is how the teams will work.

There will be a team captain. That captain will with named Senior Show Designer (keeping in the theme of WDI here).

Then the other team members will be the Concept Artist and Show Writer.

So captains, when given a project, breakup your team in to areas, and give them tasks to complete.

Work as a team, WDI is a collaborative art.

I think the captain is gunna have one of the easiest jobs of the three lol. Concept artists and writers have to work in unison, but the captain will really only have to watch over them to make sure they work together. Well, that and set up the project I guess...

No not really, they have to do the share of the work as well. These titles arent really what you do , just simply titles,that give this class more of a realistic feel, and thats how im going to treat it.

If you really want to do what the titles say, then senior show designer comes up with the ideas develops drawings to get his/her idea across to the rest of the team. In WDI the correct title would be Show/Concept Design and Illustration.

The rest of the team takes those ideas along with the Senior Show Designer and creates the project into a realistic stand point, defining all the needs and requires of the project.

But I will tell all you the job titles in WDI and what they do in the first class along with "Mickeys Ten Commandments" and WDI terminology.

Well, my hope is that it's the classes will be written down, kinda like when you study from a textbook or something. In a way, it could be like looking at a movie script online. I've seen my share of them online movie scripts, including one of a 1986 draft of Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

I highly suggest you try to not keep your questions to a minimum. Any way you can get a question out there, please do so. It may help our team if you understand as much as possible. Anything you dont quite understand can hurt you. I am also attempting to cover all my bases. ^_^"

Well, it just so happens that my father has told me that it's one thing to use a message board, but it's another to use the chat rooms. He knows that there are all kinds of troublemakers on the Internet and he wants me to beware of them. That's why I'm kinda worried about using the chat rooms. I don't want to disobey my parents. I sometimes learned that lesson the hard way as it was. Understand what I'm saying? Now, if we just continued to use the Imagineer section like this thread is in, then maybe I won't be so worried. This is where it should go anyway, considering that it's about Imagineering training.

P.S., congrats on your 50th post. Me, on the other hand, I've only been here for only three months and already I have more than 400 posts. I don't feel right about this.

yes, maybe if we can keep this class going for a quite a while, Chris will grant us a brand new board for individual threads to put classes in. Sadly, in your case anyways, Lighttech just pm'ed me asking about that VF Chat idea. I'll see about copying the entire class from the chat room and pasting it in a pm to you, if we go along witht that idea.

I'm glad Lighttech opted to simply create threads for the classes right here in the Imagineer section of the forums. That would be a bit simpler than to get the creator of the website to go out of his way to create a fresh forum section just for the classes.

lol it doesnt matter to me what forum we use. Using this forum is easier cuz everyone already knows where it is, but using the new one is also easier cuz it can be much more organized. I think to put it anyplace else in the forums might be a bit confusing. I like the idea of giving our teams names. It kinda reminds me of those team names cast members used during the annual canoe races. They mention that in Mouse Tales. Here's a couple of names of canoe racing teams, depending on where in the park the cast members work:
