Baby girl found at Denny's near Disneyland

Teen girl, infant taken to hospital after newborn seen in trash inside restroom of Anaheim restaurant
Orange County Register - CA
A customer at a Denny’s restaurant found a newborn baby girl in a trash can inside the women’s restroom Monday afternoon, police said. The baby girl was breathing when she was discovered at about noon at 1168 W. Katella Ave. near Disneyland, Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez said. Fire dispatchers instructed the customer who found the baby to administer first aid prior to the arrival of paramedics. The baby was then taken to Western Medical Center-Anaheim and is in good condition, Martinez said. “It’s obvious that the child was in danger of dying and we are fortunate that the quick actions of many people, including the paramedics resulted in this baby living,” Martinez said.
A 17-year-old girl from Indiana with blood-stained pants and blood dripping down her legs was also transported to the hospital. “We are speaking to her and we believe she is the mother that gave birth,” Martinez said, adding that detectives gathered evidence in the restroom to establish who the mother is. Detectives are also interviewing the girl’s boyfriend and his parents, Martinez said.
Prior to the incident, the girl was at the restaurant eating with her boyfriend, his parents and two children. The family from Indiana was on vacation. The girl’s boyfriend and his family waited outside the Denny’s as police conducted their investigation. They declined to comment. Charges have not been filed.
Martinez said that anyone who has a baby and doesn’t want it should surrender it to a hospital or another safe haven location. California’s Safely Surrendered Baby Law, which was established in 2001, allows a parent to surrender a baby within three days of birth without fear of prosecution. As of January 2007, 182 newborns have been given up in California, while 146 infants have been found alive following their illegal abandonment. Sixty babies, the largest yearly total under the law, were safely surrendered in 2006.

This sickens me. "I don't want my kid, so I'm just gonna throw him away". Kids are not material possessions that we can just toss out when we don't want them. If the person didn't want the child, they should have gone to an adoption agency. There are plenty of people out there willing to adopt, case proven, my dad was adopted. Do they seriously think nobody's going to figure out who did this? I'm just so disgusted. I'm glad the child was found but that never should have happened.

It's extremely sad, I'll admit, but what I absolutely hate is how the media always has to drag Disneyland into it--it's not Disneyland's Denny's, they're in no way affiliated with each other!
Sorry that just bugs the crud out of me.

It is truely sad that we live in a society that does things like this, but we do need to keep in mind that it isn't our place to put a label on this sitution. Yes it is sad and I am very greatful that someone found the baby, which will hopefully find a nice safe home and be happy. But no one knows exactlly what was going through the mother's head. We don't know if she has a medical problem that would change her thinking, or if maybe if the child had happened from incest or a rape, where she didn't feel like she could bring him/her home. I am not saying this is what happened nor am I justifing her actions, just try not to automatically assume. Keep in mind what pregancy does to a girls mind.
I agree, this has nothing to do with Disneyland. Disney doesn't own Denny's, although they might as well because their prices are horrible compared to other ones.
I hope everything works out for the baby, the family, the mother, and Denny's.

Very sad, indeed. My sister is 18 & she's expecting her kid in a month and she's very happy about being a mother.

^I hope that your sister has a good life with the child after it's been delivered. And is it a boy or a girl?

I feel that it is very unfortunate that this type of thing happened, but we must remember that it WAS a teen pregnancy, and perhaps that the pregnancy wasn't supposed to happen in the first place. So, even though this was an unfortunate event, we must remember that the parents may have been very stressed out. However, we can only assume that this is such a case.

Indiana teen charged for abandoning baby
Indiana Teen Charged for Allegedly Dumping Baby (http://www.myfoxla.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=3801765&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1)
KTTV Fox 11 - Los Angeles, CA
Orange County prosecutors charged a 17-year-old Indiana girl with felony child abuse and neglect in connection with her alleged dumping of her newborn daughter in a trash can at a Denny's restaurant near Disneyland. The teenager, whose name has not been released, was being monitored today at a hospital, said Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez. When she is
released, she will be taken to Orange County Juvenile Hall, Martinez said.
The infant was found in good condition after authorities were sent to 1168 W. Katella Ave. about noon yesterday in response to a "medical aid,"
call, said Martinez. Paramedics sent to the eatery, which is around the corner from Disneyland, took the infant to Western Medical Center in Anaheim, Martinez said. The baby is under the care of Orange County's family court and social services staff, he said. Those agencies will decide where the baby will go.
When police arrived, they saw the 17-year-old standing outside the restaurant with a group of people. The group had been at Disneyland and had
gone to the Denny's for lunch, Martinez said. The girl denied giving birth, but police took her to the same hospital for a medical exam, the sergeant said. "We believe she gave birth and put the baby in the trash can and left the restaurant," Martinez said.
Martinez said that the customer who alerted police was the mother of the boy believed to be the suspect's boyfriend.

Wait, this girl gave birth to the baby at Denny's?
If she did, I can sort of see how she panicked and left the baby there, but still that's very wrong.

I think that the powers-that-be need to make the Safely Surrendered Baby Law more publicized. I'm sure that a lot of girls out there don't know that if they are in such a situation that they can give up their newborn without gettin in trouble, and ensure the baby's safety. Safe Haven locations in California include Hospitals and Fire Stations (basically, places where staff has enough medical training to provide care) and they are all over the place. *sigh* so sad...I feel bad for the girl -- she must have been scared and overwhelmed, but at least the baby was found in time

OMG this is just... SICK(in a bad way =( ) i can't belive they drag Disney into this (well even its name a bit) but the story is just awful! i used to eat at that denny's before my family and i went to DL
I know it's not really related to Disney, except that the girl and her boyfriend's family had visited Disneyland earlier. I thought long and hard about whether to post this or not, because it's so controversial. But I decided that it would make for interesting discussion, so I went with it. If it brings attention to California?s Safely Surrendered Baby Law and the Safe Havens, then it's done some good.
