Small bomb detonated at WDW's Downtown Disney
Disney 'bomb' ignites fears, not much else (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/custom/tourism/orl-disneybomb0307jul03,0,7048361.story)
Orlando Sentinel - FL
A "bang" and a ball of white smoke in an empty Walt Disney World parking lot early Monday briefly became international news. By midmorning, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff had been on national television to say there was no known link between a pipe bomb exploding near Downtown Disney and terrorism.
The sound of the explosion at 12:30 a.m. beyond the theater housing Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba show attracted the attention of a Disney security guard on bike patrol. After seeing smoke coming from a trash bin, security called the Orange County Sheriff's Office, according to a Disney spokeswoman.
After scores of media requests, Sheriff Kevin Beary called a 10:30 a.m. news conference to downplay concern. "Our investigators found end caps, which usually indicate a pipe-bomblike device," Beary said. "We believe this was not designed to cause significant property damage or injuries." By that time, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had decided that the Sheriff's Office was qualified to conduct the investigation on its own.
"This event is every bit as important as a neighborhood-mailbox bombing," said sheriff's spokesman Capt. Mark Strobridge in discounting any chance that the Disney explosion was a significant threat to public safety.
What investigators found at Disney was a damaged garbage can. "The detonation did not damage anything beyond putting at least two holes to hurt anyone."in the trash container and damaging its hinged doors," Cpl. Susan Soto said in a written statement. "It resulted in no injuries. . . . Early evidence suggests that this was an isolated incident and that the device was not intended.
The investigation is expected to last several weeks, according to the Sheriff's Office.
