So Disney's official Underdog website has the official trailer for the movie. All I can say is geesh! My suspicions were confirmed. If this doesn't look like another Inspector Gadget (i.e. bad) I dunno what does.
In any case, this film is definitely 100% a rental. Like Inspector Gadget and The Shaggy Dog and other movies of the same caliber, this movie is perhaps cute in the theater, but not worth an ounce of time. With much better movies like Enchanted, Ratatouille, and Pirates 3 out (and coming out), don't even waste your time and money on this clunker!
I kid you not...my face looked exactly like Copper's in my avatar!!!
here's where you can see the trailer and judge for yourself:

Yeah, that looks pretty terrible!

Well that was my thoughts on this when I heard they were making it..... I have seen a trailer about a month or so ago and yes I about jabbed pencils into my eyes LOL. I am sure little kids will enjoy it but what a way to destroy a classic cartoon character.

When I say about that we have some of the best Disney films so far...maybe except this one. It looks cute, but not my cup of tea. I'm looking forward for Ratatouille and Enchanted.

My Dad did Special Effects on this last summer (no CG, but physical effects). The director's only directing gig before this was on Racing Stripes. Before that he was a CG artists. He showed up on set with a bunch of CG pre-vis. The problem was, because he was a CG artists, he had no problem defying the laws of physics in pre-vis work, and then got a ticket off when SFX couldn't make thier stuff match what he had visualized! Needless to say, it went downhill from there.

Well, it looks more like that Garfield Movie. Nothing exciting and a huge flop in the box office. Now if they had done a newer version of Underdog in 3D animation.... Then maybe it would be better. But alas.... No.

Racing Stripes??? Well, that explains it.

WHO ever thought of using live action for this movie?? My Lord. Some things are MEANT to stay animated... "gadget" was one of them... Underdog would be another.

And I think the box office just screamed at the thought of even getting this.

What I find so ironic is that the writers guild is currently in a strike. They want more money. The can't seem to come with many original idea. But they want more money. Yeesh.

What I find so ironic is that the writers guild is currently in a strike. They want more money. The can't seem to come with many original idea. But they want more money. Yeesh. I don't think the writers are having any problem coming up with ideas... it's what the execs at the studios will greenlight that's more of the problem. There are some wonderful writers out there that just can't get their stuff greenlighted because it's not like something else that has already been proven as a hit.
(thus we have Indy 4, Die Hard 4, Rocky 5 ...or was that 6?), etc...
Plus, studios have little or no patience for the quiet inexpensive movies that bring back a modest return on their investment... they just want blockbusters that while they may cost $80 million or way-y-y more to create, they'll bring back $600 million worldwide.
...IMO
also:
I've read that when you're pitching a movie to execs at a certain studio, if you can't say "It's like so-and-so movie (which needs to be a HUGE hit), only this part here is different", than you probably may as well stay home.
But how they got Underdog greenlighted as a live action, I may never know.

My little Pony, My Little Pony, How does the rest go xD
Okay, there's Underdog. Then comes Bolt (formerly American Dog) about the canine star of a popular tv show that finds out he's not really heroic. Then there's South of the Border, which has Drew Barrymore voicing a spoiled Beverly Hills chiuahua lost in Mexico. Disney is working on way too many dog movies.

Not bird, nor plane, nor even frog... Disney murdered Underdog.

Oh well. Just another movie that will end up in bargain bins across the nation that will cross my mind with little or no thought...
Yes, too many dog movies... Or movies that are live-action and star a talking animal...

I give this 2 weeks in theaters and less than 3 months before it is in the $4.99 bargain bin at Wal-Mart.

I think the movie would have cute if it was the cartoon. I think that the consupt, is cute. But I am not keen on the whole animal movie thing, don't ask. I just don't EVER watch any type of animal movies. This one is one that I will dodge anytime. I wish it had been a cartoon, when he talkes its kinda weird, I think.

Y'know, sometimes the studios don't release the bad films they make. There are hundreds of unreleased, horrible films sitting in their vaults. What I find truly terrifying is that some suit in Burbank thought this film would somehow recoup its original budget, post-production SFX costs, marketing costs and distribution costs. I can tell by looking at the trailer that its going to be... ahem... a dog.

Disney is like an oscar winning/nominated actor. They make an amazing movie that gets a lot of praise and great reviews, and then right after they make some horrible movie that's just out there to make money, which in fact doesn't make much.
Underdog...I sort of just groaned when I saw the trailer.
If I had to see it, the only reason would be to see if any pugs are in it, and to find out if the voice of Underdog is in fact the voice of the villain in The Incredibles.

OK, over the weekend I was forced to go and see this (like I said, Dad did it, and there are now 8 grandkids the perfect age for the target audience). I had extremely low expectations going into this.
My first response was that this wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. In retrospect, it actually was a descent movie geared at young audiences. It began by paying homage to the original cartoon (actually using some original clips for the intro).
There were a few campy parts, and some of the CGI action was a little over the top, but beyond that, it wasn't bad. It's no oscar contender, but I've definetally seen worse out of Disney (especially out of it's sequal division).
