View Full Version : Moving DLR

Ok first off I just wanted to know just how sacred is the land that the DLR is on right now.
Ok that having been said I came up with this idea. Keep in mind this is the Imagineering Forum where anything is possible, that having been said just imagine Disney had all the money in the world. What if Disney were to move the entire resort over to a new location were they would have enough land to expand and add a third theme park. Then Disney could sell the land on the old resort and make some more money.
Well the first thing to do is find a suitable place to make a new resort. Looking at google I don't really see any free flat land to build on around the Ahnaheim(sp) area. The only area I really see is those mountain areas to the east. I don't really think that it is a tangable idea to blast a huge valley out of them and put the resort int there plus enviornmentalists would probably have a field day. Not only that I don't think people would like to look down Main Street and see a bunch of mountains in the back of the castle. Sure it might look good at HKDL but this is DL were talking about and it just wouldn't look right with mountains in the background and not only that but I think when you look out and see mountains enclosing you you feel confined.
Ok my second idea would be to make a man-made island just like TDS. With this they could make more land whenever they need it, although that would cost a lot. Now if they moved resort on a man-made island they could also move the Disney Cruise Line there also. They could also make Paradise Pier face out into the water facing west so that it really is like a board walk area.
Now this is how I see they could do this.
1. Start building the new resort with a new third theme park. Once that is done, open it and get it up and running and have the official resort opening.
2. Close DCA and move it over to the new resort. From what I hear if DCA was closed down for a while Disney wouldn't lose that much money.
3. Have a big Moving Celebration possibly another year long event before the big Moving Day event.
4. Move DL over the the new Disneyland Resort.
5. Have a grand reopening of the finshed resort.
Now the Pros and Cons
P - They would be able to make an underground tunnel system like MK.
C - It wouldn't be on the same land and some people might hate having the park of over 50 years moved.
P - While they move the park they could also plus it especially DCA.
C - The fireworks might bother the local residents.
P - You could have the Disney Cruise Line as part of the resort if it was near water.
C - It would cost A LOT!
P - You could expand and add a third resort.
P - While DCA is dismantled they could plus it A LOT.
Anymore P's and C's you can think of.
Anyway what are your thoughts?
And please take it with a grain of salt, it's just an idea.

Okay...well... going along with what you said about this being the Imagineering forum and how anything is possible here (which I agree with entirely!) it's a nice idea. Of course there are tons of cons and not to much pros. And of course it is almost impossible. But of course, nothing is impossible though so we can dream can't we? Another Pro is that the outside world wouldn't protrude as much as it does now into DL. Anyways, nice idea!

Good idea, but it gives me a sick feeling inside also. It seems good land wise and it would be a good time for vast amounts of refurbs, but it gives me a wierd vibe moving the original kingdom Walt built 5 miles down the road and the original land made into something else. I don't know, it just feels weird, theres just too much to leave behind from it's original location. Another thing is that we would be DLR-less for 5 years during the move. What would be a good idea is having the third park down there and connecting with the main DLR area with a monorail.

I tought of the monorail thing but it would seem weird to see the outside world when going between parks. Unless the city of Anahiem agrees to let Disney put a private monorail through the city I don't think they would allow it. But then again this IS the imagineer forum. If they did do the monorail thing, I think it would be only fair to share it with the city but who would want to pay extra to be transported to anther park. If Disney and the city shared the monorail they would have to charge people. Now they could give free transportation to park guests who show their park tickets but if you just wanted to go to the third park by way of monorail you would have to pay for it, so they could sell tickets at the monorail station so you could buy your tickets there so you aren't paying extra for transportation.
Anyway back on topic the whole resort wouldn't be closed completely, first the third park would be built, DCA would move, then DL would move. This more tangible for DLR than WDW because the majority of DL guests are local, the same reason DL can do HMH.
Of course Disney could just buy every single property around the resort. Lol, how tangible is that? That would probably cost more than buying an empty lot of land. Everyone would have to coroporte. Thank god Disney isn't the government otherwise they would just build were they want and people couldn't do anthing about it. BTW the government CAN do this, they just have to compensate buy giving the same amount of land they took.
dont touch a classic it is the first Disney park and leave it that way. just build the 3rd gate off site!

Whoa MVP! you don't have to yell.:icon_conf
Well then if you build the third park off site then where would you. Try to add something to the thread.
BTW imagineerme, just what were your pros and cons, excluding money issues of course and the fact that you would be moving it from the origional land. The only other cons I would see is that the park would be closed for a while but the other two would be up and running and they could start doing the landscaping and stuff ahead of time before they move and install the buildings.
I wasnt yelling, i dont know where you are getting that from?
i was simply stating my option. why would you want to rune an original piece of Walt Disney work. for the 3rd gate you put it where ever Disney can find land at, then link the park with a bus like Disney World or a monorail system.
Oh yeah Disney would never spend that kinda money on building a new DL in Anaheim!

Don't forget that they could also do like they did for Castaway Cay and just buy an uncharted island big enough to house DLR and other parks but don't forget how much it would cost people to just get to the island in the first place

MVP, I thought you were yelling because of your choice of punctuation.
MVP, I thought you were yelling because of your choice of punctuation!
see the diffrence?
A bus system would be chaos. I imagine local residents would complain after a while. Although it would be the more realistic way unless the city approves use of the monorail. But since this is the imagineering forum, I would rather go with the monorail, although it would expose guests to the outside world and it's not like there is miles of Disney property between parks like WDW. Disney would run the risk of having people pass by advertisments deamed unsutiable by Disney. I mean any company like Six Flags or Universal could set up a bilboard along the monorail or even worse some bilboard advertising things of adult nature. The only way I could see Disney controling this would be to block out all the windows, but who would want that? Depending on what the theme of the third park would be, they could theme the monorail to be sort of a high speed transporation tunnel if the third park had futuristic characteristics. The only other way I would see is to make it themed after the Increadibles or something like that.

I was thinking the location of the 3rd gate to be somewhere near Long Beach. In fact, I saw on the map an untouched mass of land and water in Seal Beach.
Oh, and for the 3rd gate idea, read this: http://www.visionsfantastic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12529

The other cons were hypothetical. I never started thinking of them. I was just saying that they were Probably alot more cons then pros. Get what I'm saying?
I agree that it would ruin the resort. Leave it the way it is. Walt picked that spot and that's where it should stay. Plus none of us could say "It was built on a orange grove" anymore. I think it was a idea of good intentions but should just be left as is.

It is true that Disneyland is built on what used to be an orange grove. However, it was Walt's and the former owner's choice to sell and buy. It is Disneyland land now.
As for the monorail, it could probably work. Just have people show their tickets to go in the monorail for free and those who are just taking it, for public reasons, can pay. Then the people can buy or show the tickets to go to the third park. If Anaheim were to approve the idea of having a monorail outside of the Disneyland Resort property, it wouldn't be much of a problem. It'll be like what The Las Vegas Strip has. The hotels have monnorails that connects to another hotel. For example, the monorail connects to Monte Carlo to The Bellagio.

markmansion, well i wasn't and see no difference but that was just me. oh well i am over it and i hope you are.
but i like that idea of the tunnel for the monorail to the park it doesn't really matter if it futuristic or not. just as long as it gets you there, it doesn't even need to go in to the park just drop people off.
This just popped in to my head, what about the 3rd gate being a water park it doesn't have to have transportation. plus this is what i believe Disney wants any ways. It has been talked about for years.

^ That water park could resemble Sea World's new Aquatica water park. Look it up. It's awesome!!!

More realistic than moving Disneyland would be buying all the land between Harbor and Clemintine, then relocating Harbor over. 3rd gate goes at the east end of the entrance plaza.

^That's a great idea. I was actually thinking that myself, until I realized how much of a financial nightmare that is.
If you ask me, best way to go is get that big plot of empty land in Seal Beach. I even found the best monorail route to the area (which is a strait canal or aquiduct of some type that reaches from just nearby the resort, to just nearby the Seal Beach land plot).
But then again, you got something there. That would give it enough land for the arrival of WestCOT Center.
WrongWay i really love your idea but some questions on my mind is; would Disney fork out the Billion's of dollars that i would cost to buy all that land on top of the new park, where would the hotels that the new gate would take the place of go and plus the new parking garage would be sitting on Garden Walk. I don't believe Anaheim would go for that. but if that all could get figured out and Disney would go for it than i would be one happy camper. Great concept though!
Quick question the DTD stands for Down Town Disney right? that would be an expansion?

Yeah, DTD is Downtown Disney. According to a reliable source at another website...(who's user name starts with Mar...) DTD was designed with expansion north from ESPN zone a possibility/probability.
To me, it just makes sense to put a hotel at the far end of that to create more foot traffic. How cool would it be if that hotel had a "hotel guests only entrace" that could be opend to let people out of DL back by Splash entrance after Fantasmic/Fireworks. That would take a TON of congestion away from Main Street and off the trams. It would be closer to walk to the garage from Fantasmic than to walk to the tram.
Also, a minature golf/arcade place is/was to be part of that expansion. I left it off as I was in a hurry.
I also left off the water park in the current PPH parking lot.
Oh, and another wing of GCH that was/is going to be built out into what is now the marriage pavilion... big grassy area by the mad mouse coaster.
Oh yeah, it is a financial nightmare. Gardenwalk land went for, what was it, $100 million? Or was it $200 million. I'm guessing it would be something like $1 billion just to get the land. Not going to happen.
But this is Arm Chair Imagineering, in a thread about picking up the whole Disneyland Resort and moving it. I'm sorry, but that would be way more than $1 billion to move all the existing rides and buildings to a new location.

It would make more sense for Disney to just take the land from the hotels already there and build from there.

I'm confused. Make more sense than what? How do they take the land without buying it.
