Unkrich to direct upcoming feature
Daily Variety

Toy Story 3 is coming in 2009, but John Lasseter won't be the director. In an unusually candid presentation from the typically tight-lipped execs, Lasseter and Disney Animation prexy Ed Catmull provided extensive details on their upcoming slate at the Mouse House's investor conference Thursday.

In addition to confirming for the first time that a third Toy Story is in the works, most likely for 2009 release, Lasseter said Lee Unkrich will helm it. Unkrich co-directed Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo but has never before been sole helmer on a Pixar pic.

Lasseter directed the first two Toy Story pics but is presumably too busy in his new post as chief creative officer of Disney Animation to work on individual films.

Lasseter said, "The greatest thing about the merger of the two companies is that the creators of Toy Story 1 and 2 can make 3 with the story that we wanted." Comment was a not-too-subtle swipe at Disney's former plan to develop a third Toy Story, without Pixar input, before Disney decided to buy the toon studio in late 2005.

Hmm, I wonder what the plot is? I can't wait for this.

IMHO, disney is running out of ideas. Why keep making sequels?

Wow... another one.
I hope they at least keep the same voices.

They should make a rule. If the voice characters are, say, grown up or dead, the sequel shouldn't be made. I think it would be a lot more appealing to the older viewers. But of course, the kids can't tell the difference. And they're the target group...

Will it even end?

I have no problem whatsoever with a number three. Is Disney running out of ideas? Maybe they were, but I have renewed confidence with Mr Lassiter at the helm.

Understand one thing about him. He loves the Toy Story movies. LOVES them. Cherishes them. Protects them. That's why he killed the Pixarless version Disney was working on before the takeover. If it was anything less than wonderful, he wouldn't have allowed this to take place.

As far as the original voices are concerned, with the exception of Jim Varney (Slinky) and Joe Ranft (Wheezy), the original voices should be there. Tim Allen has mentioned as much in past interviews.

Normally, I would stay stay away from animated sequels whenever possible. But this one? No way. I'm thrilled beyond beleif to see the story end (yes, from all indications Lasiter has made, END) the way its creator envisioned.

One I'll give more than a chance. I'll be there on opening day, just like the first two.

I totally agree that they should keep the same voices. I get really irratated with sequels when a different person is providing the voice for a beloved character (like Prince Eric in Little Mermaid II)

Toy Story 3 Scheduled for 2010

Toy Story 3 Scheduled for 2010 (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=19251)
Coming Soon
The Walt Disney Studios is in production on Toy Story 3, via its Pixar Animation Studios, says The Hollywood Reporter. In an appearance during Disney's annual shareholder meeting in New Orleans, Lasseter said: "We are finally in production on Toy Story 3," adding the film is scheduled to come out in 2010. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are back on board to voice Woody and Buzz Lightyear, respectively. The screenplay is by Michael Arndt, who just won the original screenplay Academy Award for Little Miss Sunshine, according to Lasseter, who said: "We got a great story."

Wow! That's three more years to go.

If it takes three years to do it right and not have it come out as a 2-bit made for DVD sequel, I'm all for it. I just hope that they don't build a permanent Woody attraction in Frontierland to go along with it...

I'm glad they are making a third one. The first two were both great, and I just hope that Toy Story 3 has a similar formula as the last two. I think it should be really good.

Didn't they stop production on Toy Story 3?

Disney_Guy

^They did. That is, back when Pixar and Disney were supposedly going to break up after Cars, Disney had their minds ahead and started thinking out for Toy Story 3. But when Disney bought Pixar, they cut the whole production back and now Pixar is the rightful developers of this film now.

I can't wait for this movie, I have always loved Toy Story, and this will be just great, especially when it's Pixar you can rely on.

Yeah the original Concept for Toy Story 3 was that Buzz Lightyear toys would be Recalled which included Andy's Buzz so then all of the toys from Andy's Room would go all the way to Taiwan to try and rescue him because of his Malfunctions. Here was a previous Promo poster, but the idea has been scrapped.

Just what would the "heartwarming lesson" in that version be. That children should continue to play with dangerous toys? and that their parent's ignore safety recalls? What were they thinking?

That's probably why the idea got scrapped =)

Who said the toy was necessarily dangerous?

Ezra

Toys get recalled because something about them is defective or dangerous. Usually it's for small parts that a child could swallow, sharp edges, lead-based paint, things like that.

I don't think they have to be there all that time. They can probably record the voices pretty quickly. It just takes all that time to get the animation done right. By the way, who is going to do the voice of slinky dog now that Jim Varney has passed away??

I didn't know the voice of slinky passed away. That really stinks.
