London's National Theatre is threatening to sue The History Boys star Ben Barnes after he left the West End production of the Tony award-winning play (which began 29 JAN 07) to join the cast of a Disney film. Barnes abandoned his role as sexually manipulative schoolboy Dakin this week after being offered the title role in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Disney's ?50 million ($97.5 million) sequel to 2005's The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. The National Theatre has been forced to fly in Jamie King, who has previously played the role of Dakin, from Los Angeles as there was no time to rehearse a new actor for the part. A spokesman for the National Theatre said yesterday (02 FEB 07), "Ben Barnes has decided to leave The History Boys early, before his contract is finished. It is something we are taking very seriously. He has accepted an offer to be in a children's Disney film." The Broadway production of The History Boys won a record six Tony awards, including Best Play, in 2006.

Wait, he is too old to play the part of caspian! Caspian is supposed to be around 13 or 14. He is 27, he looks like he could play 20, but not 14! Unless he is playing the older caspian in the voyage of the dawn treader, but I doubt that. I hope that disney does not royally mess up this movie, as they did with the first. Really, does the book mean anything anymore? But the least that they could do would be to get the age casting right!

That's how theatre is though. Shakespeare used to have girls play male parts and vice versa. Why cast someone of that age that doesn't have the experience or talent to do it, if they can get someone older who can portray someone of that age perfectly? Have you ever seen the movie Grease? Almost all of the main characters were supposed to be around 17 or 18 years of age, when in reality half of the cast were in their 20's and 30's.

There are people that age who can play the part though. There are millions of actors throughout the world, and thousands who are perfect for that part. It doesnt seem like they were looking for a certain age. If they want it, they will find it.

Oh yes, they will be back in this one. They'll want to do the films that feature the Pevenise children first, while the actors are still the right age.

I am hoping so. The books are great and since they are making the 2nd movie it only seems logical they do all of them. After all that seems to be the trend right now. All 3 LOTR and Harry Potter are done and or almost done so.....

Disney Commits to one Narnia film a year

Comic-Con Breaking News:
Disney Commits to Make All 'Narnia' Films, One a Year (http://www.cinematical.com/2007/07/28/comic-con-breaking-news-disney-commits-to-make-all-narnia-fil/)
Cinematical

Disney's completely packed panel was about all things Narnia this afternoon, and the biggest piece of news was the fact that they'll be releasing a new Chronicles of Narnia film every May, starting with Prince Caspian 2008, and continuing through the rest of the seven books.

While that's fairly exciting news, I sure hope that doesn't mean the films will suffer as a result. It takes a lot of time and effort to make a film replete with special effects that's based on a classic series ... will they be able to keep that up? With five more movies yet to come after next May, that's a lot of simultaneous work that'll be going on. If the movies end up being disappointing in any way, the first thing people will blame will be a rushed production schedule.

Still, as long as they do some serious justice to The Magician's Nephew, I'm all for it. There's nothing more frustrating than waiting years for the next installment in one of your favorite film series to come out.

Prince Caspian presentation at Comic-Con

http://www.visionsfantastic.com/forum/gallery/files/15227-princecaspianbanner.jpg

Disney Presents Prince Caspian at Comic-Con (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=22909)
Coming Soon

The Disney panel began with The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Richard Taylor of Weta came out first and introduced some of the other crew members. These included the costume designer, creature designer, and others. Via satellite from Prague was director Andrew Adamson.

They kicked things off by showing a pre-viz animatic from the new movie. It showed one of the children from the first movie being picked up and flown to a Telmarine castle on an island by a griffin. After disabling a guard, the other Pevensie children arrive with other griffins and storm the castle. They are aided by mice who sneak in (despite interference by a cat).

The second clip was a sizzle reel where they showed some new footage, behind the scenes clips, and other goodies. They emphasized how much more action-packed this second film is, and that was very apparent from the clips. We saw a lot of battles and action. Also shown were the new dwarf character, Trumpkin played by Peter Dinklage, and the sword fighting mouse, Reepacheep.

The panel was also joined by a new cast member. Andrew introduced Prince Caspian himself, Ben Barnes, over the satellite feed.

In the Q&A they revealed they begin working on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in February. While Caspian is Adamson's last film, they hope to maintain the look throughout the films. They also showed a mask from a satyr named Tyrus. The effects guy operated the goat-like mask making it smile, blink, and open it's mouth. It was quite impressive. A live model also came out wearing a Telmarine armor on the stage.

Overall it was a fun presentation and the film looks like it will live up to its predecessor.

Good news for this. So now here is where it is going to start becoming like the Harry Potter movies.. All different directors. Hopefully they do keep it consistent and look the same. And I was really hoping Adamson would have stayed for the long haul. Oh well.
