the Olympus SP-550 UZ: 18x ultra zoom

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0701/07012507olympusp550uz.asp

You know I love my Olympus 8080 camera, right? I mean, as much as I love my Canon Rebel, I still can't beat the sharpness and rich colors of my Olympus point and shoot. However, the 8080 really smells in the low light department... plus while it's a very wide angle "for-a-point-and-shoot" lens (28mm which I love for those castle shots and fireworks shots) it's zoom is pretty abysmal at 130mm. Those two items are the main reason I purchased the rebel digital SLR. Now this new Olympus seems to take care of all the old issues I had with the 8080. This new camera is 5000 ISO and has the same base wide angle as the 8080, but a zoom of 504mm!!!

read the press release.
WOWZA!

I wonder how the shutter lag is. That's about the only thing they didn't mention. I can't wait for the actual hands on review to come out! I could see myself selling my cameras and lenses for TWO of these babies (around $500 each? a steal!!)

I just noticed that the pictures released by Olympus do NOT include a hot shoe for an external flash. I can't imagine having a camera with 500mm lens and not having an option for an external flash! Hopefully by the time the camera is actually released, someone will have stuck a hotshoe on that thing!

Isn't the Olympus great for photos? Do they make Cam Corders? I heard Olympus is great for photos. Mine is a DXG.

I replaced my camera last winter. I haven't gone all out for a dSLR due to the $$$, but I bought an SLR style Point and Shoot. It's a Kodak P712. 7.1 MP, 12x opical zoom. It has a Hot Shoe, and the bounce flash that Kodak sells for it, "talks" to the camera's computer so there are no manual settings required on the flash itself. Nice thing is I'm able to use filters as well, they offer a telephoto and a wide-angle lense for it too.
Some specs:
.07 second shutter response
432mm zoom
5x digital zoom (60x total)
14 frame burst
2.5" LCD and digital view finder

Did I mention I love this camera? I paid about $400 for it, and bought the lens adapter ($13), a UV Filter & Polorizing filter for it. I want the bounce flash next, $150. Each of the lens are about $150.

Daaaaang, that is one sweet camera! I wonder what the MSRP will be?

The 5000 ISO has me intrigued... but the "buyer beware" part of my brain really, really wants to see test images. The grain on that has got to be horrific...
