After being bounced around Hollywood for a number of years, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars sci-fi adventure stories may end up being animated by the Disney/Pixar toon machine. Citing anonymous sources, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the studio is in final negotiations to acquire film rights to the Tarzan creator’s novels, which were first published in the early 1900s. The 11-volume John Carter saga follows the adventures of a Civil War officer who is transported to Mars, where he is captured by green men before emerging as a great warrior and marrying a princess. The first title, A Princess of Mars, was published in serial form in the periodical All-Story in 1912.

NO WAY!! A Pixar film I'd actually be interested in seeing!
I'm sorry to see Kerry Conran is off the project, since I loved Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (and thought it was a better CGI animated film - which it basically is - than anything anyone has put out so far) , but I'm glad its being made at all...
Just so long as we lose the "smart n' sassy" Pixar humour.

Pixar team visits Edgar Rice Burroughs archive
Pixar's 'John Carter' Team Visits Tarzana (http://www.erbzine.com/news/)
Pre-production for the Disney/Pixar "John Carter of Mars" film is gathering steam
ERBzine
The Pixar creative team spent Tuesday morning exploring the massive Edgar Rice Burroughs archives in the ERB, Inc. offices on Ventura Blvd. Pixar's Jim Morris (vp), Andrew Stanton (director), Mark Andrews (script) discussed the John Carter of Mars film project with Burroughs representatives, Danton Burroughs, Sandra Galfas and Jim Sullos.
All six members at the meeting expressed a deep commitment to the project, acknowledging that they had been inspired by Burroughs' creations from a very early age. This is evidenced in the excitement held for the John Carter property and the plans for a film trilogy faithful to the Burroughs books. Projected release date is sometime before 2012.
Danton Burroughs presented the creative team with a wealth of resources, including art samples and books by ERB scholars such as Irwin Porges and John F. Roy. They noted that their major resource to date had been the thousands of official ERB, Inc. Webpages and Webzines.

So it will go like, WALL•E, Up, Toy Story 3, and then John Carter of Mars?
Sounds like a pleasant lineup coming from Pixar!

They're making a TS3? Crap, I'll have to find a way out of seeing that one... What's Up, though? And with all the gloriousness Rataouille generated, why aren't they milking that more? I haven't seen it, so I don't know if a sequel's impossible, but even in some cases where sequels seemed impossible, they made 'em anyway. The new flick sounds cool. and Cars was nowhere near their best friend, though I liked the 'hillbilly ****' comment.

Pixar's John Carter of Mars to be a trilogy
Pixar Making John Carter of Mars Trilogy (http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=21222)
Part 1 landing before 2012
Empire
The future is looking very strange for Pixar - all fleshy and with regular sized eyes. The studio, whose animations kick the less well-rendered arse of every other 'toon house's output, are dipping a large toe in live action. Pixar already has Brad Bird's 1906, a live-action telling of the San Francisco earthquake of the same year. But the studio has now announced that it plans to make a trilogy of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars.
The creative team of Andrew Stanton (Director), Mark Andrews (Screenwriter) and Jim Morris (Producer) made the announcement while on a research trip to Burroughs' archive. They didn't confirm what shape the trilogy might take, but said the first would likely appear before 2012.
