I was watching the vaction planning DVD for the Year of a Million Dreams and I noticed that they refered to Disney/MGM studios simply as Disney Studios. Does anybody know if Disney is planing on dropping the MGM from the name of the park? I believe that I read Disney's contract with MGM is over or will be soon.
The liscencing agreement between Disney and MGM expired on June 27, 2005 and will not be renewed. There's a two year grace period written into the agreement, so the park's name will have to change next year. Not only that, but the use of MGM characacters must end, which means that The Great Movie Ride will have to change.

I do not think the Great Movie Ride will have to change. All I have heard is that the ride has a separate agreement from the park's name and I heard that the contract for the ride is for life. Besides, most of the MGM films represented in the ride like Singin' in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz and Tarzan are no longer owned by MGM, but they are owned by Warner Bros.

They have been calling the park Disney Studios for years. It's nothing new. There's some rule in their contract with MGM that they must call the park Disney Studios in the trip planning information.
However, they ares till making merchandise with the Disney-MGM Studios name.

Why sell merchandise with MGM name if the contract is expired?

Because right now the official name is still Disney-MGM.

Hey, what did they do with the Disney-MGM Studios name? Shouldn't it be changed by now?

'Disney-MGM' will become 'Disney's Hollywood Studios'
Walt Disney World renaming Disney-MGM Studios (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/custom/tourism/orl-bk-rename080907,0,3700135.story)
Orlando Sentinel
So-long, Disney-MGM Studios. In a widely anticipated move, Walt Disney World is renaming its movies-oriented theme park, dropping the "MGM" name from the brand. But unlike much of what has been anticipated in Disney-gossip circles, the new name will contain neither Pixar nor ABC.
Speculation has centered on whether Disney would drop "MGM" from its name. Officials had long denied that the theme park would be renamed either as Disney-ABC Studios, in honor of the broadcast network owned by the Walt Disney Co., or as Disney-Pixar Studios, in honor of the computer animation movie company that Disney bought last year.
Disney's Hollywood Studios will debut in January, Disney World officials announced today. "The new name reflects how the park has grown from representing the golden age of movies to a celebration of the new entertainment that today's Hollywood has to offer - in music, television, movies and theater," Disney World President Meg Crofton stated in a news release.
Crofton said the new name, Disney's Hollywood Studios, reflects the park's present and future. "As a park all about entertainment, Disney's Hollywood Studios will deliver like never before," she stated in the release. "Now we can say that Hollywood is literally our middle name."

It's a good name...but oddly enough already showed up in the HPB area of DCA. What's stranger is the Hollywood Studios area of HPB is done up to look like Disney-MGM Studios. So a little MGM Studios was built in HPB, called itself Hollywood Studios...and now the real MGM Studios is being renamed Hollywood Studios. It's madness!!!

Excelent Name! well it seems better than Disney Studios, because there's already one on Paris, but Disney Hollywood Studios it's a good name!
And this means that we have to say goodbye to MGM! but the sad thing is that they will get rid of the great movie ride because it has MGM things :(

They will not get rid of the Great Movie Ride because of this. The agreement with MGM had nothing to do with the Great Movie Ride. All of the MGM movies used in the ride like The Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain and Tarzan are owned by Ted Turner and distributed through Turner owned Warner Brothers. The sale happened in the early 80's long before the park opened. MGM only retains the rights to some United Artists films used the in the ride's film finale. Those were not part of the original agreement either.
If Disney wants to get rid of the ride, it will be of their choosing. No one can force them to close it. I doubt that will happen though. It is the centerpiece of the park and is the most Hollywood centric attraction in the park.
The park will always be MGM to me, but I do like the new name. Thank goodness they didn't go with that dreadful Disney-Pixar Studios name!

This is good news, and plus, it gives us confirmation to some of the rumors floating around, including the Block Party Bash coming to MGM... or should I say, DHS?

I truly hope that a classic attraction like The Great Movie Ride will not have to be removed because of this contract termination. It would really piss me off to see that go. Becuz we all know that it would be replaced with something Pirates or Pixar related crap. I'm already annoyed that they bulldozed residential street from the backlot tour. No more Golden Girls house.. :(

I never really liked MGM... I'm glad that the park will be officially renamed by the time I make my first visit ever :) :) Wouldn't want to go just before... it would be awkward. Plus I LOVE HPB, so Disney's Hollywood Studios is just perfect. :)

I also call it MGM. I don't think I'll stop, regardless of the name change. All the CM's will know what I'm talking about if I as a question about MGM, so there's no real reason for me to call it anything else. And if they change GMR, I'll be furious.

I don't think the MGM name prevented them from doing things about all of Hollywood. The MGM name was added with Disney to add a feeling of Old Hollywood when MGM reigned supreme. It really didn't affect what attractions went in the park.
I'll always call it MGM.

I personally like MGM as the better name , I mean Hollywood would make more sense if the theme park was located in Hollywood .

I don't think it's bad or good, it will just be weird to call it Hollywood Studios instead of MGM Studios, which we're all used to.

I just think it is funny that so many people say they dislike DCA and how WDW is slowly getting more and more stuff from it. If so many people dislike DCA why spread it around. I don't know. Myself, I like DCA. It is different from Disneyland, but in a good way.

I know it's popular but maybe with it gone people will stop calling it "MGM studios" That is a big no-no in Florida......It is called Disney-MGM Studios or the Studios. MGM, other than loaning their name and characters did very little with the park. It was all Disney funds and Disney people that built and worked in the park. I have this debate with my sister too, cause she calls it MGM. She informed me that they have been directed to continue to refer to it as "The Disney-MGM Studios" until January......
