in your opinion, what is the best ride at MGM?

Disney_Guy

Never been to MGM, but Rock 'N' Roller Coaster looks like a great one. And I've been on DCA Tower of Terror a lot and it's one of my favorite rides while some people say WDW's is better, so I'll go with TOT.

Well after Tower & RRC you have what...GMR? Underwhelming Studio Tour? Flaming Car Stunt Show? Animation Bldg? Fantasmic!? Star Tours? Kinda underwhelming when you think of Disneyland's or even DCA's attraction list. And Tower & RRC are literally right next to each other, leaving the whole rest of the park to feel, well, inadequate.

Twilight Zone... the rerideability of MGM's makes it unique. I hope DLR updates their software to match WDW's.

I think the better question would be where's your favorite place to eat at MGM as there aren't many rides and I LOVED the food there :D

and the two big ones freak me out so I'll never go on either (I shouldn't say that, my dad could probably talk me into the Rocking Roller Coaster... maybe)

the GMR was pretty cool, though, so I'll say that one...

I think the Great Movie Ride is the best ride at MGM. It is often overshadowed by the Tower of Terror and Rockin' Roller Coaster, but it is the heart soul of the park. The entire concept for the park started with the Great Movie Ride. It was originally going to be a pavilion at Epcot, but Disney thought the idea was so good that they decided to do a whole park themed to the movies. The GMR is what MGM is all about. It's about why we love movies. Also, it's an excellent ride filled with lavish sets and many AA's. It's classic Disney and they don't make them like that anymore.

Yes, attraction wise the park is not well balanced. Most of the park's main attractions are on Sunset Blvd. ToT, RRC, and Fantasmic! can all be found in the same area. And there is almost always a crowd of people at the end of the street. Since that's where the two rides exit out into and there is also a major eating area located there as well.
But some fun attractions can be found on the other side. I'm sure many can agree that most need to be updated.

But favorite attraction...Tower of Terror and for some reason The Great Movie Ride (only once in a blue moon though ).
For shows...Fantasmic! and ive always wanted to see Beauty and the Beast-Live on Stage since I enjoyed the movie.

I dunno, I guess I will always be partial to Star Tours. Sure its not the most intense like ToT or RRC but being a Star Wars addict I loved the theming of the attraction with the ATAT and speeder bike and the Ewok village and little slice of Tattoine. Ok yes if they updated it a bit it would be even better, but the attraction as a whole including the queue areas gets me everytime.

RNRC! Love the music! Love The Ride. Love everything about it. Plus I like TOT! I find it to be better than DCA's version. Because once you go into the room with the track, you don't know when you are going to drop down.

Considering I'm an American Coaster Enthusiast I'd have to go with RRC, but TOT comes in at a close second.

1. Tower of Terror, hands down. It's an amazing attraction, that utilizes astounding technology and special effects. Add in a classic freefall... hoo yeah.

2. Rock`n`Roller Coaster: It's a fun ride, but it doesn't really compare in my opinion to some of the other serious coasters. Still, the launch is sweet and the Aerosmith audio is nice.

3. Great Move Ride, gotta love that nostalgia. Disney Audio-Animatronics at its best.

I used to love the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Though why did they have to change it to 2 drops..to numerous drops? I know many people love it, though my stomach can not handle that many drops..

I wish they would just keep the rides the same..if people want more of a thrill, then make another ride. Its just not fair to those whos' stomachs can not handle so much movement. :(

Rock n' Rollercoaster, followed by Star Tours, and, even though it's not a ride, Muppetvision 3-d.

I personally don't care for Tower of Terror, I have problems with free fall rides. They scare me. :)

Tower of terror all the way! I love the 5th dimension room.
Why is DCA's version not as good? I was just wondering.

PeoplemoverMatt
12-26-2006, 12:56 AM
Most people say it's because there is no 5th Dimension Room & no Tower 4 randomized drop sequence. Having ridden both, I preferred DCA's Mirror Scene and Tower 2 non-random huge air time drop sequence by a wide margin. Plus DCA's Tower always has short lines due to DCA's attendance not being exactly eye-popping. What's not to love about that?

Odds are you won't find one, and you certainly won't find one here with on-ride filming not allowed. We do not support or encourage the breaking of established rules on Disney rides.

Having ridden WDW's version of Tower of Terror and then riding the one at DCA, I was a little disapointed with the overall theme and of course the missing 5th Dimension Room but I realized that I was missing the main point of the ride, the free-falling.
Not everything can be the exact same as everything else. I'm sure if the DCA version was the exact same as the one at WDW, there would be complaints about how DLR copied WDW. Everything gives off a different experience. If the world was the same, what would be the fun in that. ;)

Plus, I enjoyed the view from DCA's ToT over WDW's. I wish that the Tower could have been angled a little bit more towards Epcot, but it does fit in nicely with the Sunset Blvd. look

Hi,

I think my favorite is a toss up between (shock and gasp) Tower of Terror and Rockin' Roller Coaster. Great Movie ride is great too! Not a lot to chose from at MGM...I think it's time for a new ride. I couldn't tell you what, but something to spruce it up a little :D

Hugs and peaches,

I'm kinda curious as to other differences between the DLR Tower and the WDW version. Are the theming and style of the buildings the same? The lobby and layout?

PeoplemoverMatt
06-02-2007, 10:51 AM
They're similar in theme but the building layout is quite different. MGM's Tower is the only tower in which the drop shafts are in front of loading, instead of behind it. Because of that, the elevator must travel forward through the '5th dimension room' to reach the drop shafts.

In every other version of Tower, the shafts are behind loading, so the elevator just needs to pull back into them. That allows for the format seen in both DCA & TDS - 2 show scenes and immediately into the drop sequence.

MGM's Tower has 1 show scene, then the 5th dimension room, then drop sequence.

MGM's my favorite park in WDW, but as far as the best ride... I'm not a big coaster fan, and ToT just scares the daylights out of me, but I don't go to MGM for thrill rides, I go for the SHOWS! Fantasmic all the way! BotB on-stage is also kinda interesting, as it the TLM ride. Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular is great, and the Great Movie Ride is a decent way to escape the heat of the day, and while you wait to get on it, you get to watch old movies! How wicked is that?

I prefer the shows there over the rides !!!! I forgot what the name of this one was but it was some movie tour thing that's indoors and you go through movie sets like Indy & Wizard of OZ , it's pretty cool .

Yeah, it's called the Great Movie Ride. And as it has (or at least had) the most shows, it's natural we like MGM for the shows. Indiana Jones, Beauty and the Beast, Fantasmic... is Voyage of the Little Mermaid with actors? It's been a while since I've been, so I'm not entirely sure. And Great Movie Ride and voyages can count, or almost count, as can the Muppets 3-D. And lights motors action as well. MGM is great with shows, and also that it provides lots of jobs to cast members with so many parts to cast, as well as walkaround characters and other cast member positions.

In the musical I'm writing about some Imagineers trying to bring back 'The Dream' to WDW (and learning that in just doing their jobs correctly they do it), I have a good section of the second act take place at MGM.

MGM ROX!

Yeah, I was wondering when someone would mention Indiana Jones in this list.

FYI history stuff: The Disney-MGM studios was originally conceived as a pavillion at EPCOT. It was supposed to show how animation and filmwork is done. The idea outgrew the pavillion and became what was intended to be a half-day experience. The original tickets were priced accordingly as well. The park was slammed at the opening and for a while went on 24 hour shifts to compensate the number of guests. They expanded quickly and awkwardly, which makes for the confusing layout. The backlot area was originally never intended for guest access except aboard the tour tram. They opened that up and put some Muppet stuff back there. Then Sunset Boulevard area was conceived to help draw guests off into the other side of the park. The Sorcerer's Hat was originally going to be a large dark ride with the ears being to ferris wheels. They spec'd it out on what used to be Residential Street and where Lights, Motor, Action now sits. It now is simply a facade with a merchandise location. I hope that helps explain why the park is so different from other Disney Parks. If you buy a Park Hopper pass it is worth a day on your pass to visit it, but by itself the park is not a draw.

My fave is the Tower of Terror, absolutely. Great theming, from the queue area to the elevators, excellent special effects and a creepy atmosphere only matched by the Haunted Mansion. And the drops are more terrifying that the Rock n' Roller. To me, it's no contest.
Ok, second place is the rock n' roller, and Star Tours takes third. I did enjoy the Great Movie Ride.
