When they clean the film and projector it looks quite amazing. They should really maintain that more often.
As for the queue... it looks just like an airplane hangar.... only more colorful. I think some people may be turned off by the gray walls.... and the appearance of exposed metal and such. I would argue they did this so to bring more focus to the pictures of the legends of flight. Looking at the pictures and reading the bios with that cinematical music playing in the background does a very good job of setting up the ride more as an emotional experience.
And thats what Soarin' is... an emotional experience. Its not a thrill ride that scares us, or a dark ride that makes us laugh. Its an emotional ride, that fills us with the sensation of flight, and allows us to take in the beauty of the local topography. The queue I strongly feel adds to the emotional impact of the ride.
