Jack's staring at a snowflake, though it's been replaced recently by a small glass ornament I'm told(wonder if this is from someone playing 'steal the apple' with the snowflake...).
In the movie he spends a great deal of time contemplating over christmas stuff and doing experiments with things from christmasland before he puts his plan into action finally and creates christmas in halloweentown(once you get into the mansion).
