Tom, your friend may have not liked the books because he is a guy. I have never talked to any guys who have read the books, so I don't know what their reactions are. I loved all three books, I've even read them all three times each. But it is true, the second book is hard to get through because of certain events that take place (If you wanna read the book I won't tell you what happens, but if you don't plan on reading them, I will tell you), but not because it is a bad book.
Islandchica, perhaps Stephenie stated that so many times is because she wants to really show you how amazing it is that Edward gets so close to her, considering that he is so drawn to the scent of her blood. And it may be there to show how truely breath-taking he is if he can take her breath away everytime with just one touch. Also Stephenie maybe uses the whole 'I heard a noise and it was my teeth chattering' to emphasize how horrific the scene that she just witnessed was. Like she was so distracted by what happened that she didn't even recognize the sound of her own teeth. But thats just me. Although now that you pointed it out, I'm gonna notice it everytime I read the books, haha!

June 2008 Update: In response to the outrageous number of emails that I have received with questions concerning Midnight Sun, I talked to Stephenie this weekend and she asked me to let everyone know that Midnight Sun is her next project. She has not yet finished writing it (and there is no timeline set up, so we all need to put a lot of effort into being patient for a while longer), but she is definitely still planning on having it published. And, after Breaking Dawn comes out, Stephenie will have much more time to focus on writing Midnight Sun.
