Well, I'd preface this by saying I don't mean to get all preachy, but, in truth, it's hard not to be when talking about what Christmas means to me.
Yes, Christmas is used as a celebration of the birth of Jesus, just as Easter is in remembrance of his death and resurrection. But as a Christian, this is something I celebrate year round. Therefore, Christmas for me is so much more than just that.
It's about family togetherness. It must be the time of year, because any other time, spending this much time with extended family would drive me crazy. At Christmas, it's what I long for.
It's about Christmas music. The songs, the singing, the peacefullness of it all.
It's about the movies and TV specials. It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Frosty the Snowman...I could go on and on.
It's about the lights, the carolers, the live nativity scenes.
It's about the spirit of St Nicholas. Not the Santa Claus that we know today, but Nicholas, the bishop of Myra, who gave selflessly, not asking for anything in return. We can use more people like him today, and how quickly (myself included) we forget the true spirit of giving instead of asking, what do you want for Christmas???
It's a feeling that should be carried in our hearts all year long.
