Cars Land, which opened in June of 2012, is a depiction of sites and locales from the Disney-Pixar movie Cars. The richly themed environment begins at the entrance, a long street reminiscent of the film features several dining and shopping experiences, along with attractions like Luigi’s Flying Tires, a ‘bumper car’ style ride inspired by Disneyland’s own past attraction, ‘The Flying Saucers’. Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree is a fun ride for all ages and features the unforgettable Mater singing several songs.
The highlight of Cars Land is the huge Radiator Springs Racers, a chance for people of all ages to ride in their very own Cars Land character through this expansive E-Ticket attraction. Don’t miss this attraction! FastPass is available for Radiator Springs Racers, but typically are not available past 11:00AM or so – plan your day accordingly, as the standby line is usually in excess of two hours.
Catch something to eat in Flo’s V8 Cafe, featuring breakfast, lunch and dinner with a variety of entrees and desserts to choose from.
Stop by one of the shops featuring Cars Land and ‘Route 66’ memorabilia, or catch a quick bite or refreshment a the Cozy Cone Motel.
Radiator Springs Racers is the central attraction of Cars Land. The attraction features six passenger cars as ride vehicles and reaches a top speed of 40 mph. The extensive queue contains many references to the fictional town of Radiator Springs in it’s heyday; Stanley’s Oasis, which was the site of the original town.
The queue takes you through outdoor buildings. One being a repair garage, another with walls made with translucent oil bottles. You make your way up to Tailight Caverns, which contains the original, but closed, hotel.
Boarding your ride vehicle, (2 rows of 3 seats for each vehicle), you take a short cruise through Ornament Valley before entering the massive show building. Several scenes from the film are featured with several audio animatronic characters. Half of the vehicles are directed to Ramone’s for a quick paint job, or Luigi’s for some nifty new tires. After a quick pep talk from Doc Hudson, the two vehicles queue up for the big race.
The car speeds around the outdoor track with banked turns, hills and bridges. Your photo is snapped as you near the finish line. The outcome of the race is random, but it’s fun to see which vehicle wins.
This attraction is suitable for most ages, but the 40″ height requirement is strictly enforced. The ride has some fast takeoffs, quick stops and dips. There are some mildly scary moments inside the dark ride buildings involving a large tractor, but these moments are quick and shouldn’t pose a problem if your child is familiar with the dark rides of Fantasyland.
Single Rider and Fastpass are available, but be aware the Single Rider line can be up to an hour wait during the busy season, and Fastpass Return times are now strictly enforced (Get your Fastpass tickets, available near the entrance to Cars Land, early in the morning before they sell out).
This attraction is one of the most expensive attractions built in a Disney park and took over two years to complete. The attention to detail inside and out is apparent. Be sure to enjoy this attraction at night, too. The beautiful outdoor lighting in Cars Land should not be missed.
